This profusely illustrated book by a master of the subject offers a complete course in transforming the study of anatomy into art, with emphasis on the skills needed to draw the human body "from the inside." Each stage of the course progresses logically through the body's main areas — trunk, limbs, head, and features, with the entire body eventually viewed as a complete entity. Accompanying a text on techniques that even novices can master are nearly 200 illustrations in color and black-and-white. These include works by painters, graphic artists, sculptors, art teachers, and students. All demonstrate how to achieve accurate and expressive forms. Invaluable to beginning and advanced students of life drawing, the text also includes practical exercises that will help develop visual imagination.
I found this to be somewhat of a "strange" book. While there is some excellent information contained within, the majority of the drawings are done by students - instead of the author! While an occasional student might prove to be interesting, I was far more interested in seeing what the teacher/author had to offer.
The book is laid out by topic, which is given a one page treatment of useful info, and is then followed by many examples of various quality. For the aspiring artist looking to study anatomy, there are better books available.
I found the book quite educational to practise human anatomy, especially with the examples.
The picture examples are what I found most useful if I’m honest, as for the instructions it was slightly confusing to follow the step-by-step.
That’s not to say that the teacher/author wasn’t helpful, they were, but the writing did confuse me at times - it seemed to use complicated explanations for simple concepts, therefore could have been executed more effectively literarily.
