Inspirational Teachers Inspirational Learners: A Book of Hope for Creativity and the Curriculum in the Twenty First Century

Rate this book
What is is that inspired teachers do differently that males them stand out from all the other thousands of teachers? Basically, it is that they plan for their pupils to be inspired. Many teachers who join the teaching profession do so because they were taught by inadequate teachers and thus they feel they can provide a far better and more exciting education for youngsters than they received themselves. Teachers speak with clarity of detail about the stimulating and influential teachers who inspired them and now they want to do the same. This book is an examination of what our most inspirational teachers do in order to get creative and inspirational responses from children. It's aim is to put fun back into teaching, provide a framework for creativity in the twenty first century and act as a book of hope for the new curriculum proposals.

I was especially taken by his ideas about portfolio assessment techniques, enterprise learning and the need for humanities and arts subjects to be intertwined. Also appreciated the emphasis on PLTS as these are a set of skills I've tried really hard to embed in my own practice despite the fact that no one I've worked with since my PGCE has ever heard of them...v reassuring.

It's not quite up there with my beloved Beadle's How To Teach. Ryan's pedagogy is more evidence-based and coherently articulated, but his 'overhead in the classroom' anecdotes just don't ring as true as those in Beadle's book, and it's precisely this grounding that has me returning to Beadle whenever I need some inspiration.

Firstly I would say that this is not a book to be read once! As a teaching assistant considering teaching, I found this book truly energising and, well, inspiring as I seek to be sure of my philosophy for teaching. It seems clear that the author cares deeply about having decent academic and behavioural expectations of children and about developing those character and personality traits that cannot be so easily measured. I will read this again should I take the plunge as an incredibly useful CPD tool!

I am still slowly working through this book because I have to stop all the time to scribble down notes and ideas!
