This simple guide provides valuable insights for transforming an out-of-date public, school, or academic library into a thriving, user-centric learning commons.
The goal of the learning-commons strategy is to provide a centralized, "go-to" location for all users seeking help on the complex issues of teaching, researching, and being a global citizen in our changing world. A library organized around the learning-commons construct fosters collaborative work and social interaction between users during research and learning. This paradigm also encourages use of innovative technologies and information resources. Transforming a traditional library into a thriving learning commons does take some planning and effort, however.
Each of the seven chapters in this book explains a simple step that a librarian can take to improve their facility. Photographs and concrete examples of the suggested strategies are included; checklists at the end of each chapter serve as indicators for measuring progress. This text is useful for library administrators in school settings (both public and private, K-12) as well as academic, public, and special libraries.
Some key take-aways. 1. Create space that is flexible and user centered. 2. Remove barriers 3. Survey and listen to users 4. Shift image from guardian of resources to gateway to resources 5. Improve access and communication through website 6. Keep current with technology
While our library certainly won't be moving toward this model any time soon, there are some valuable insights into changing views of the library and the integration of a user-centered and most of the time technology-centered "commons". Definitely could still incorporate some of the examples into the library now.
Harland, Pamela Colburn. The Learning Commons: Seven Simple Steps to Transform Your Library. Santa Barbara, CA: Libraries Unlimited, 2011. Print.
Summary: In The Learning Commons Pamela Colburn Harland details how she was able to transform her library into a learning commons. She discusses how she collaborated with her peers in the high school where she works as a library media specialist. Harland emphasizes the importance of employing the expertise of others to reach her goal of creating a successful learning commons. This expertise includes that of the Information Technology staff in order to reach the goal of creating a central location for the access and retrieval of information within the school for all staff and students. Colburn has some very good ideas, although some of the information contained in the book was dated as well as unrealistic. She explains that after discussing her needs with the tech department, she was able to move 40 computers into the LMS. She doesn 19t go into detail about where and how she was able to accomplish this feat. She also mentions that she found that teaching researching skills was a waste of time. She waits until the need arises and then will help each student who needs it. I have actually found that teaching the concept first, saves time later when it only has to be reinforced. Harland does explain how she promoted her LMS to parents and the community. She includes some helpful rubrics on digital portfolios and examples of wikis. Ridiculously Simple Synopsis: How to create a learning commons in 7 steps.
Great inspiration for beginning of school year. Interesting to note how my thinking about library services has evolved AND devolved over time. Or where it has always been on target. The main audience is for middle/high school and college librarians* but a lot to gain for any librarian ready to up their game.
*If I left baskets of glue sticks and scissors out for easy access every day in my k-4 library, I'd quickly become the custodians' least favorite person. That's the nicest way I can word it.
Another great resource for bringing a school library into the 21st century. "All you need to do is to shift your way of thinking from being the protector of information and resources to being the advocate for unfettered access to information and resources" (p. xiv)
I came into this agreeing with the author about the philosophical stuff. Some of this is not actually simple to implement, but the things that are (oh, if I never had to answer another "do you have a glue stick" question) seem v worthwhile
