Hidden Wishes #2

A Squire's Wish

Rate this book
Given magical powers through a wish by a jinn, Henry Tsien was thrown into a hidden supernatural world. Forced to battle his own faulty, pop-culture driven assumptions as well as shadowy supernatural organisations while leveling up, Henry found an ally in Alexa Dumough, the Knight Templar Initiate.

But that alliance is now threatened as Alexa is forced to take the Knights Templar’s test to become a Squire. Together, the pair must face numerous trials that will test their patience, skills and magic. All the while, Alexa must consider if becoming a Squire for the Knights Templars is truly what she wishes for.

The Hidden Wishes series is an urban fantasy GameLit series with a game-like user interface, magic, the supernatural, kickass women and shadowy supernatural organisations. No harems involved.

I read the 1st book, A Gamer's Wish a few months ago. Im glad to have gotten around to this 2nd book by Tao Wong, A Squire's Wish as well. It was fun to catch up with Henry, Lily & Alexa & see the progress they're making as a team.

In the 1st book, Henry, an Asian Otaku Gamer Guy finds himself transformed into a Mage & his life is an RPG. Lily, his adorable, decades old Jinn is growingore accustomed to this century. Henry is leveling up & taking on new missions & tasks. & then there's Alexa, who has been basically on the verge of excommunication.

You're probably wondering why this story only received 2 stars from me. Well, the 1st book was so much more exciting. There was a lot of story building. Character development & world creation back then. Tao was giving us a mental illustration of what type of world Henry has been thrusted into. Now that he can see past glamors, he is exposed to the truths normal humans dont see.

This 2nd edition, we get an interesting quest & we see those we enjoyed previously. The new characters were forgettable to me though. The troll was predicting. The secret was refreshingly different.

A good, solid, if not entirely original sequel.

The second volume follows the adventure of a would-be mage using a game interface to master "classic magic". The title is slightly misleading as you somehow expect the book to have the Templar character introduced in the previous book as MC. While she's a part major part of the story, it keeps the same perspective around our gamer nerd. Which is kind of disappointing as she is the one whose story progress more during the book.

Outside of this, there's no real surprise coming from the book. While I was ranking the first one as close to 5, this one is a solid 4, but no more.

The series is currently on hiatus, but Wong's promised a book "soon", so I'll be waiting for it.

Book? Two

Mistakes: none found
Plot: wasn't anything New really. The story ends at 92% so you have another novella, not a book.
Characters: While they get stronger, there isn't really any growth to their personalities or situation.
5/10 just a way to kill a few hours.

Better than the first

I gave the first book a 4 out of 5 and this was better. Not 5 star better but better.

It really gets into the urban fantasy tropes and it sets the groundwork for a lot of fun stuff down the line, which I hope will be soon.

Awesome work Tao

Not bad, but this series is missing something that would make me want to come back to it. I must admit I don't much care for any of the characters. I do enjoy the system apocalypse series a lot, but this one doesn't compare.

Tao is getting better and better

A lot has improved with the writing of A Squire's Wish. The exploration into how the magic works is a lot of fun, and creates a sense of a larger world. The focus on characters other than Lily has made the series much stronger. While there is a lack of an overarching baddie, the exploration of the world is fun and draws the reader in.

There is a surprisingly in depth delving into race relations and misconceptions. It makes the world that Tao is creating much more interesting and relatable.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Having been given magic by a Genie, the other magical powers organizations are watching the protagonist closely. One of those watchers is a low-level Templar who is working toward initiation. Much of this book covers the initiation test that the Templar is undergoing.

The story is well-written and the evolution of both the Templar and the MC are believable and enjoyable. It must be said that the leadership of the Templars just assuming that the MC will be involved directly in that test puts some strain on that verisimilitude.

Solid world-building here as well, with the introduction of several new organizations and better explanation of how magic works.

Recommended.

Tao Wong never disappoints

The author never disappoints with his books! I love the developing characters, and Henry’s slow realization of what he’s got himself into and struggle to accept some things. Lily’s development was also fantastic, and of course our favorite Templar trainee.

Nice installment in the wish series. Interesting to see how the templar gets along with her quest as well as the main character. Definitely interesting enough to continue following this series, Most gamelit fans should enjoy this one, though most hardcore LitRPG fans probably won't, but it's a good story anyway.

I rather enjoyed all 3 books in this series, the characters were interesting and realistic and I enjoyed the complicated ideas behind magic in this world. The races and their attributes were interesting also. I feel these books could have been made into an entire series with how interesting and large the world was. Thank you Tao Wong.

The second book in a great series

This is the second book in the series and it really shows how much the author improved from the first to the second book. The characters all had some interesting developments and the story had some interesting twists and turns to it.

The main character wished for magic from a jinn and now has to deal with that wish through a game system...

Good as always

I really love his books about system apocalypse. This is still good with the depth I have co e to expect from a good author but it's just not as action packed or as diverting concept. But I will continue on as it still had great promise

Great job... but...

A great job imaginative and put me in mind of the movie bright If not for poor editing it would be a solid 5 stars but the occasional typos were jarring enough to break my immersion. Keep up the good work and make sure your editors are sober.

A great sequel

A great sequel which adds a some depth to both Alexa and Lily, plus to the world itself. It's not all just quests and exp. Is every quest you get worth doing?

More adventure and big finish.

These are shorter novels, with an easy, fun feel to the them.
