Comprehensive, innovative, and practical, this text offers educators a powerful approach to teaching writing. Rather than have students perform repetitive exercises, it focuses on engaging students in grappling with words and experiences to make meaning. Such topics as the paradigm shift from product to process; an overview of the writing process; teaching prewriting and how to shape writing; examining genres; collaborative learning; classroom management strategies; grammar within the writing process; proofreading, editing, and publishing; cognitive developmental theory; developmental writing and spelling; brain theory; research; assessment and grading; the reading/writing connection; and writing across the curriculum are covered. Grades K-12.
I read this as part of my Abydos Teacher of Trainers. It covers every aspect of teaching. From theory to the nitty-gritty practical. Even if you aren’t an Abydos ToT you really should read this book. Every idea is supported by volumes of research and has been tested and tried in the classroom. If you are an English teacher do yourself a favor and read this book.
A solid piece with utility. Unlike some other teaching composition books, this compendium focuses on real life strategies for getting kids to learn the paradigms of writing, rather than just offering some choice philosophy and abstract talk about rhetoric.
Some of it is too lower level and bland, but that comes with the territory.
One of the best books, if not the best, I have read in regards to my career as a teacher. Dr. JAC has concrete techniques to teaching skills that often stump struggling students. This is a must read/own for ALL teachers, especiallty those who teach writing.
