Great Migrations: Elephants

Rate this book
This exciting reader follows the story of the longest and the most demanding elephant migration on the planet. Living at the furthest corners of the hot and dry Sahara Desert, the very margins of where elephants can survive, hundreds of these great creatures make a dangerous but necessary journey as their main source of food and water dries up and they must go in search of more. Battling 120-degree heat, sandstorms, and fierce thunderstorms, these amazing animals travel 35 miles a day in a race against time in search of the bare essentials of life.

Baby elephants sometimes suck on their trunks just like human babies suck on dummies or their thumbs, for comfort - and this book has a photo of a baby elephant doing just that! Soooooooooo CUTE!!

National Geographic Kids is always a wonderful tool that students can use when learning about a specific topic for science, social studies, etc. It has a good balance of important information for students to continue their learning as well as fun facts to keep students interested.

The information in this book was set up and organized well. I liked the fun facts that were included Example: elephants can make more than 25 separate sounds that mean different things. The pictures, maps, and diagrams made the book interesting. I also liked how it explained vocabulary words. This is a great nonfiction animal book.

Nonfiction Twin Text Entry #4

Perfect for the curious younger reader who wants a little more than a picture book, Elephants by Laura Marsh is a gem. Published by National Geographic Kids, this book is chocked full of interesting facts, diagrams, and a multitude of pictures of elephants, their families, and their habitats. It has a great glossary in the back of the book complete with more pictures, and a list of websites for children who want to learn even more. My favorite feature was the Q & A sidebars which were really a list of bad jokes. I paired this book with a Dr. Seuss classic, Horton Hatches the Egg. This is a story I loved as a child, and I have never forgotten Horton’s motto: “I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. An elephant’s faithful, one hundred percent!” (Seuss, 1940). I loved that his faithfulness was rewarded when the little bird hatched looking quite like an elephant! The reading levels of these two books are comparable, they’re both about elephants, and they’re both a lot of fun to read. I find them to be bosom companions.

Marsh, L. (2010). Elephants. Washington, D.C.: National Geographic Society.

Seuss, D. (1940). Horton hatches the egg. New York, NY: Random House.

Concerned mainly with elephants in southern Mali, this book is an interesting introduction for kids to problems endangered species face: loss of habitat, changing migration patterns, etc.

Since elephants are my favorite animal, any elephant related story is always a slam dunk for me.

I recommend for any budding conservationist or kids who love animals.

This is a great informational book to learn all about elephants. You can learn all the parts of the elephants and how they communicate with each other, to how they migrate. Another great book to do a lesson on, I would love a whole book shelf of these in my classroom.
