Once upon a time, he had a last name and a pulse—and he was straight. But Marcus Desarno meets his demise in an explosion of broken glass and twisted metal, and when he wakes up, he’s a blood-sucking, sexually ambiguous, card-carrying member of Green’s Hill, the northern California refuge for the fey, the terminally furry, and the undead. It’s a tough transition, but gentle Marcus eventually finds contentment serving Green and his consort Adrian.
Then Marcus meets arrogant, vain, and competitive Phillip and feels compelled to make him a vampire to save his irritating life. Now Marcus has an unwanted roommate and a crush that won't quit, and Phillip has the motive, means, and libido to bang anything with or without a pulse in a three-hundred mile radius. It's a good thing vampires live forever, because it might just take that long for Marcus to convince the love of his unlife that gender lines are for the living and that the person driving you crazy might be the one your heart would beat for—if it could beat at all.
Amy Lane dodges an EDJ, mothers four children, and writes the occasional book. She, her brood, and her beloved mate, Mack, live in a crumbling mortgage in Citrus Heights, California, which is riddled with spiders, cats, and more than its share of fancy and weirdness. Feel free to visit her at www.greenshill.com orwww.writerslane.blogspot.com, where she will ride the buzz of receiving your e-mail until her head swells and she can no longer leave the house.
Urgh, I really don't think any story involving threesomes, open relationships, or anything with open policy to sleep with anyone in between (especially for twenty years), fits to my liking. Not at all, thank you very much!! I still like Amy Lane's stories, but from now on, I will just stick to her contemporary ones. Since if I'm not mistaken, one of her fantasy ones are also an M/M/M. Yep, definitely NOT going to go anywhere near those.

Marcus and Philip are friends with benefits who also happen to be vampires so to them, time is relative. What it might take regular men a couple years to figure out, takes them twenty. The problem is that Marcus is not much of a communicator and Philip is kind of a jerk. But Marcus is kind and genuine so we’re sad that he's not getting what he wants, needs. And Philip is cocky and vulnerable and we know that if he just confessed his love for Marcus that everything would be alright. But they don't talk. They have hot, blistering sex with each other and with others but they don't have the heart to heart. As a result, Philip thinks maybe Marcus isn't into guys, thinks that maybe he's holding a torch for his maker. Marcus never just speaks up, throws Philip up against a wall and tells him he loves him and wants it to be just them. Where they live, on Green's Hill, everyone loves everyone and so Philip thinks for it to be permanent with Marcus that it can't just be the tow of them. But that's all Marcus wants. So it goes in a dizzying dance of language that it's a treat to read that leaves Marcus with his unrequited love and Philip lost in the land of obliviousness.
There is enough of Amy Lane's Little Goddess world here so you can place this story in the context of the larger work. If you've read them all, like me, it's a treat to know where this one goes. If you haven't, you're still okay because the story itself is accessible in the familiar spin of one friend looking up after a fight one day and realizing that the asshole standing across the room is actually the love of his life. Philip is adorable, he's all indignation and sputtering with his new found understanding. He gets it, finally, that he is loved and adored. Marcus, who has loved him even as his heart took a pounding, is at last, rewarded. The end is what I wanted, the “just us, exclusive, you and me only”. The ending is an "awww fest" and I loved it.

I should have known better than to pick up this book:
1. I have already tried and failed to enjoy Lane's Little Goddess series and had decided long ago not to try any of her m/m stuff set in that same universe, and 2. I typically don't like vampires or werewolves in m/m fiction. Why I like it in het fiction but not m/m, I don't know, but it almost never does anything for me.
This time I was drawn in by the title. I just couldn't help myself, but halfway through the book and I just didn't care about the characters, and with literally no plot, there was no reason to keep reading.
Not Lane's fault. I knew this wouldn't be my cuppa and I bought it anyway. Hopefully it was a lesson learned.
I couldn't resist the title.I Love You, Asshole! it spells hero as a jerk and the cover is so erotic I just had to plunge into it.As promised the story didn't disappoint me.It was a fast paced story with lovable MC and some really nice side characters. I was swooning over the story, sexy vampires having sex and then fighting like bitches...
But let me assure you the sex scenes were not dragged pages after pages like some author do and scenes between two heroes were filled with passion and downright sexy...
Marcus a teacher was converted into a vampire when he suffered a fatal accident. The transition period is so brutal they go through a phase of blood thirst and lust crave. So male shifters are used for both purposes and the sweet ex straight teacher like it and rolls with it as he was assured by Adrien, the vampire who converted him ,that its only temporary and he can get back to his straight life after he has more control. With lots of emotional issue after conversion he coups with being a vampire and even loves it enough to enjoy it for ten long years.... Marcus ... Then comes along pain in his Butt... Philip One day on a skiing expedition he meets Philip and who is a fantastic skier and disliked by all for his attitude including Marcus, but Marcus couldn't help being attracted to the jerk and take up a race against Philip where they have another fatal accident and Philip didn't have any chance of surviving, so Marcus converts Philip in a impulse and bears the brunt of an ill tempered jerk claiming to be straight and bitching and acting spoiled brat like, through out the story. Picking fights... Having random sex with females right under Marcus nose...but sleeping in Marcus bed at night. Making Marcus life a misery. Don't get me wrong here,Marcus doesn't bear the brunt just like that he gave back as much.Though secretly crushing for Philip all along.Philip was as much dependent on Marcus but sucked at expressing it.It was a complete case of miscommunication between the two. They wasted twenty years, How stupid is that...
If you enjoy my lame version of trying to narrate the story please try the authors version I am sure you will love it. Some incidents were described to fast to understand but as I was interested in scenes between the two MC it didn't bother me much.Maybe I had the problem because I read the second book of the series first but it can be read as a stand alone. So Cheers Amy Lane for such a fun filled story!
I don't normally read paranormal romances, but this was freaking Amy Lane, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, I just couldn't connect with the characters or the world they inhabited. Period. *shrugs* Clearly it's just not to my tastes. If PNR is your thing, it might be worth giving this one a go.
However, genre aside, the writing in this novella just wasn't as strong as I've come to expect from this author. In the brief bit that I read, Lane abused the parenthesis on practically every page (what did the poor parenthesis ever do to you, Amy? Huh? Huh?!), the pacing was way too fast, and there was just something about the storytelling that seemed... Sporadic? Sparse? Disconnected? I dunno. I'm finding it difficult to describe.
This is the second story I've read set in the Little Goddess world and it makes me want to read their story more!
I really liked Marcus and Phillip, though a lot happens in so few pages. There are quite a few characters that have stories elsewhere and so we only get bits and pieces.
Do not “judge a book by its cover“ or in this case “ by its name.“ We who have been reviewing Amy Lane and her Greenshill stories for years, all those followers know what I mean when I say “This is one terrific view of what was happening in the lives of two popular residents in Our Little Goddess Series” Bravo !
I just love when I get the scoop to fill readers in on a background story of a book I am reviewing. So, we who keep up with Amy Lanes Little Goddess Series were asked by Amy to nominate members of Greenshill whom they wish to learn more about, and she would pick one nominee and write their story. Marcus and Phillips relationship was the winner!
Marcus and Phillip were big players in the main stories, but much of their life was pretty much behind the scenes. They began with a small role in Vulnerable and we learn more about them in Wounded when Cory is healing and they helped her establish a connection to the Vampires of the Kiss that Adrian bequeathed to her upon his untimely death. In Rampant we start to see how deeply their relationship is growing.
In I love you, Asshole we see it all. The challenge to the writer is keeping her timeline true and then of course the writing, editing and angst of it all. The easy part was mine; it was reading this sexy, wonderful, frustrating, funny, story of how this came to be.
Marcus , is a school teacher. The story opens during a car accident where Marcus is turned by Adrian at the scene. Evidently, Marcus was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is brought to Greenshill to heal and be mentored as a vampire by a vampire. One of the funniest lines in this story was from the pompus stockbroker Philip saying, “ I was so surprised that the love of my life would have pecs” This coming from two men who are constantly sleeping with women, even though they are constantly sleeping with each other.
For Amy Lanes contemporary fans, this Fantasyland of Cory, Green, Bracken and Adrian, she has created is as real to us as Deacon and Carrick or Xander and Christian, or Mikhail and Shane. We are a whole set of avid followers chomping at the bit for any smidge of story she can send our way in-between the novels she writes for all of us.
Whim was a charming spin-off, introducing him as Brackens brother. Guarding the Vampires Ghost gave us our beloved Adrian and what he was up to or down to in heaven. Lastly we have been keeping up with the Jack and Teague and Katy mini-series of six novellas, another family on Greens Hill.
For me, they are my family. I hope Ms Lanes contemporary readers pick up one of the Greenshill stories and want to gather the entire set up and join us in this world as well…There is enough action, sex, love angst and humor to share with you. I just love it all….

Let me start off by saying that if you are interested in reading The Little Goddess series, do not read this first! There are way too many spoilers!
That being said, I really enjoyed reading about how Marcus and Phillip got together. It was very interesting and of course, I had no clue....TWENTY years??? Amazing! I guess some communication would've helped!
I really liked it around the halfway mark ~ mainly because that's when more characters from The Little Goddess series started coming in...especially Cory. It did make me sad to have to go through the bit about Adrian ~ again and miss him even more! :(
Wow I really enjoyed this one. Though I haven't read the other stories this was strong on it's own. Marcus and Philip were really good together - the sex was hot and the eventual HEA most welcomed. Though there was a bit of distance with the characters - because they are only ever really in one place doing a single thing or two -- it would have been a bit stronger connection wise if we'd seen them (vs being told) doing more things together.
A strange, lush book that blends comic fancy and serious angst. It MUST be read as part of the Little Goddess series to land fully, but I enjoyed it quite a lot...
A strangely philosophical book that focuses on emptiness and the idea of CRUSHES as something active and dangerous.
The central relationship between Marcus and Phillip is enchanting and the sex smokes, but a lot of sideline incident (from other, earlier book) muddies the water at points with minimal explanation. I only wish Lane had used Time more deftly in the book, so that readers unfamiliar with the rest of the series (which is not named or cited anywhere) felt more invited to the awesome party that's going on here.
Oh, it was so nice to learn of Marcus's background and how he came to Green's Hill; and how he met Phillip...........
Because there are so many characters from the Little Goddess books, anyone reading this without having read the 4 LG books previously, might get befuddled by the references to people and events (eg:I was in tears again for the night Adrian died, even though this was seen through Marcus's eyes).
But the dialogue between Marcus and Phillip was great: it made me want to laugh; or sigh; or even cry. But the love shone through - even though Marcus and Phillip didn't realise it sometimes. And isn't it wonderful to be able to say "I love you, dickwad" in return for "I love you, asshole".
This story was at turns frustrating as well as bittersweet. Marcus is the 'nice guy' not willing to push Phillip after realizing his feelings; and Phillip is trying to understand his relationship with Marcus and going about it in a way that seems to do more harm than good.
Usually I feel a little daunted by polyamorous relationships or orgies in the stories I read, yet the one in this story made me think of how puppies/kittens pile together. I saw it as their way of trying to cope with their immense loss; it wasn't about gratification but connection and togetherness.
So while these guys had me cussing at them, and pulling out my hair, I really enjoyed it.
I think if I had read the rest of the series this would have been more enjoyable. As a short it has lots of summarized details from the rest of the series which makes the actual story between the two MCs shorter. I wish there had been a little more detail and insight into Phillip. Most of the story I disliked him because he put off such a "party-boy" atmosphere that it was hard to find why Marcus loved him. Still it was a good read even as a lone book. I hope to improve the rating if I read the rest of the series.
I'd say this is more of a 3.5 for me. I think the problem with all of these Green's Hill stories is that they're separated into like, 5 different series! So, in order to fully appreciate any of them, you've really got to read all of them. That's sort of frustrating. Nevertheless, I did enjoy this book. :)
ETA: I also think that cover is extremely unattractive...
I usually love Amy Lane's books. I'll admit I haven't read them all, but I found this to be not my cup of tea. I liked the beginning and ending, but was lost in the middle. 2.75 Stars
3.25 stars. An interesting visit to Green's Hill as two newly made vampires spend more than twenty years of miscommunication before they finally get their act together. A little frustrating.
This was a good story but there was something missing for me to love it and want to read the other books in the series (which apparently I totally spoiled myself for by reading this first. oops.).
Umm, well, this book is unique... The only reason I am giving this book a 2 star rating is the main character loved this person for 20 years continuously. Since the main character is a vampire and he is immortal, time is endless to him. The author beautifully captures the emotion the main character feels, the deepness of the feelings, the amount of feelings, and how as time passes, the feeling does not disappear.
Otherwise, this book might be a zero star because the guy Phillip is a total a**hole, a total homophobe, a total slut, a total user, etc. There are other reasons this book could be a zero star, but that p***ed me off the most.
This was one of the books I just couldn't like. First of; if the MC's had just communicated honestly, the 20 year wait wouldn't have even happend. Truly this whole book was pointless to me because of that. Secondly, if they all know so much of each others inner thoughts because of some telepathic mumbo jumbo, wouldn't the MC's have at least glimpsed more of the other MC's inner thoughts and feelings (in 20 years!)? Lastly the narration of the story just didn't do it for me.
It is faithful to Amy Lane's style, but I have to admit that it was somewhat lacking. The ending was nothing like the smooth endings that I am used to with other of Mrs Lane's books.
I’m not sure I completely understood this two “gay for you” approach of the plot, but for sure it was something I have never read before. When Marcus is turned into a vampire, he is straight and with a girlfriend he loves, he has never once desired men and he was completely satisfied with his love and sex life. But a newly made vampire is dangerous, and it’s custom to have them interact only with same-sex supernatural creatures, so that they can be as forceful as they want without causing damages. So Marcus had his first same-sex sexual experiences and truth be told, he didn’t mind it. Sure, Marcus still preferred women if he had to pick or at least that was true until Phillip.
Phillip is a young man Marcus met one night; he is fascinated by him, but probably nothing would have come from it if not for a fatal accident that forces Marcus to turn Phillip into a vampire; now Marcus feels responsible for the young vampire, even if he is almost unmanageable and almost homophobic. The only same sex relationship he manages is with Marcus, and so they become buddy friends with benefits, sharing a room and occasionally also lovers. For 20 years Marcus pines for Phillip, waiting for the time the man will realize they are destined to be together in a real mating bond.
In a way, I prefer Phillip to Marcus. I think Marcus is not fighting enough for their love, it felt like he didn’t believe in it. Phillip is always the one, to my eyes, who takes the first step, but Marcus is always ready to misunderstand his motives, in the end making him going away. This come and go motion continues for a long time, when, again, it will be Phillip that will take the ownership of deciding what it will be of them.
There is a lot of sex in this novel, even if it’s in front of your eyes sex; sex between men and women, vampires and shapeshifters, elves and sorcerers, and whatever combination of these you can imagine. So yes, love and bond here is not represented by monogamy, but more by a commitment of souls that goes beyond that of the bodies.
Fantasy vampire M/M unrequited romance with some gay-for-you ambiguity because becoming undead can change your personality more then a little bit. Marcus Desarno becomes just 'Marcus' after dying suddenly in an accident and is forced to become a vampire and about ten years into his new dead life, he meets and is forced to make Phillip into one as well or let him die in a sudden avalanche (long story which is putting me off skiing this winter!). Marcus lives with lots of shifters, fey and vampires at Green’s Hill in northern California where he has a safe place to live and lots of shifter blood to drink so his life feels pretty full until the unrequited love comes knocking on his door to somewhat ruin his life at the same time as making it worth living because his new roommate Phillip. I liked the strong fey Green and his consort Adrian because it is an uncomplicated shared love and it is the model for the other folks that join them in the safe haven on the Hill. Marcus is pretty miserable for the first twenty years living in the same room as Phillip because Phillip is convinced that he is straight and only has 'relationships' with creatures with lady bits although he keeps coming back to Marcus (that's where the gay-for-you aspect comes into play). This author has an amazing talent for setting the scene with only a few phrases. This is a short story but it felt like a full sized novel because there is so much story (I'm not even talking about the Adrian trauma!) and I loved that these two men are friends and flawed characters, but still the perfect fit for each other even though they were never gay when living as humans which just goes to show that maybe you love the person and not the bits hiding in their underwear. 130 pages and bought on All Romance site $3.99 3 and half stars (four if it was a bit longer because I was already missing Marcus)
Reviewed by Jamie: I must admit, the title and cover of this book alone intrigued me. However it did take a bit of getting into. I would advise readers to stick with it. For me, I found the beginning had a lot of what could've been a very interesting story but the details were skimmed over. For instance, when Marcus is made into a vampire he is brought into a dwelling called Green's Hill, which is basically a large paranormal community. The whole concept was very interesting but not the main focus of the story.
It wasn't until Marcus meets Philip and turns him into a vampire that the story started to grab me. The relationship between the two vampires was up and down, and I did feel for Marcus as he pined for Philip.
As the story progressed there started to be more about Green's Hill and the inhabitants, and some of the imagery was really beautiful.
I was pleased with the outcome of the story, and there were a few laugh out loud moments when the two vampires were rude to each other.
That there are other titles in the Green's Hill universe make more sense, and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal, vampires, fairies, shapeshifters, and perhaps something a little different.
synopsis: marcus swerves to avoid missing someone on the road, and in order to save his life, he is turned into a vampire. several years into his vampire life, marcus meets phillip one night while skiing, and they set off an avalanche. in order to save phillip's life, marcus turns him into a vampire. phillip doesn't take well to it, until marcus comes in and they have sex. neither marcus nor phillip were gay before they became vampires, but the sex urge is strong, and, in the beginning, only men can take it. marcus, however, falls for phillip and has to watch him have relationships with lots of women, as well as being friends with benefits, for 20 years.
what i liked: the premise. i liked the idea that there were all these beings gathered in one spot and that it was sort of a sanctuary for them all. both marcus and phillip seemed as though they could be interesting characters.
what i didn't like: how short the story was, and how it felt as though it was pulled from a larger story with little to no explanation.
For those who haven't read any of the main Little Goddess stories, there are going to be spoilers for them in this one in the form of references of when these characters (Marcus and Philip) were in them doing various things, so be fairly warned. (I knew some major bits already, but there were new details from here that I didn't know or were explained more thoroughly than I expected.)
That said, I really liked this one. I don't remember much currently about Litha's Constant Whim, the only other Green's Hill related book I've read at this point, but these two were explosive when they chose to be. The title was, of course, absolutely brilliant and perfect. =)
