Thomas Devereux and his two close companions get more than they bargain for on this year's hunt for North American Grizzly. The Group and their hunting guides find themselves stranded on a snow covered mountain after their helicopter crash lands during an early winter storm. Unable call for rescue, they struggle against the elements in the hopes that help will soon arrive. They are not alone. Death stalks the mountain in the form of a savage beast thought to exist only in nightmares - a creature of pure evil whose sole purpose is to feast on human flesh. Thomas and his companions must come to terms with the existence of the beast and find a way to defeat it...or become its next victims. Jack, Thomas's Siberian Husky, stands alongside the group in their battle against the monster and the elements as each night brings terror unlike any they have ever known. This is a must read for werewolf lovers and general horror lovers. I didn't find a single page in this book that dragged or made me feel like I needed to skim chapters. There were several points in the story where I actually felt cold and deeply terrified hiding from this monster right along with whoever was feeling it at the time. I cared so much for Thomas, Delmar, Daniel, Jenny and the husky Jack. (Minor spoiler but if you're like me and need to know if the dog is ok at the end: He is) Realistic dialogue and comes with some dark humor as the cherry on top. You need to read this book.
I admit my bias. The author is a friend. That added less than a star.
Most amazing werewolf story I've encountered, with a DARK thread of humor running cover to cover. The prologue and epilogue MUST BE READ!! Hebert actually used them to great effect.
The author has crafted a good book here, with a complex plot and interesting characters set in a snowy Canadian land. I thought the book was long-winded at 500 pages (approx.), however, it was still action- filled and hard to put down. I visited the dunny and there was my Kindle in the bathroom. 20 minutes later, my wife was banging on the door, “Are you okay in there?”
While I applaud any would-be author having a go and actually writing something, I think Shawson’s mistake was to edit it himself. I found various boo-boos on nearly every third page or so. C’mon man. Fork out the extra $ for a professional edit. It has multi-threaded story ala Game of Thrones (damn you George Martin). This means each character’s goings-on happen in alternate chapters. I’m not a fan of that style. The ending had no real twist to it; it’s like when you get to the bottom of your Lime Spider and find there’s no delicious lump of semi-soft ice cream at the bottom of the glass.
I enjoyed this, as I would most werewolf stories, since they are just the best creatures in the Creature Feature genre, but this book just dragged on for too long. Still – it’s easily worth 3.5 scary stars.
This was an AMAZING book, by far my favorite. It's construction and flow are ingenious and from the start it is a wild ride that doesn't stop. The writing is so well done and as I read it I found myself being covered in chills and looking over my shoulder. I felt the fear of the characters, and that in itself was enough to cause me to lose a few nights sleep. The development and portrayal of each character is done masterfully and the storyline is terrific. I highly recommend this novel to any and all readers, especially those who enjoy a classic, old fashioned werewolf tale.
I must say this is the best werewolf novel I have read! This story grabbed me and kept me scared from beginning to end. Fantastic characters and I especially loved Jack, a dog, who added much to this story. This took werewolves to the next level and I encourage anyone who loves lots of gore, fright, and no dull moments to read this one. I do hope a follow up novel is coming.
The narrative and different take on this werewolf story is refreshing and thrilling. Stiryline excellent, character development took me right into the their lives that I felt disappointed and even frustrated that there was no cure. Some spelling mistakes though, to be checked.
I personally know the author, but that is no reason for my five stars. i really liked the story and even though he makes a few mistakes (its his first book), the imagination put into it more than makes up for it.
This book was written with an eye to constantly surprise you I truly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone regardless of your taste in horror novels
I have not read a good werewolf horror story in a while. Most that are out there are multi book romance ones. This is not werewolf romance its just good old dog soldier horror and I loved it. It kept me hooked when every time I thought I was coming to the end, I realized the story was taking yet another turn. This was really enjoyable and I'm hoping this writer keeps going. I'm not a big fan of werewolf series books. There have been a couple I consider to be great but again most wind up being romance books. Although a lot of creative liberty was used as the author admits in the end this is after all fiction. I look forward to the next book from this author.
Great werewolf book. Bummed when I finished it. And it is a page turner. The author was able to make the "same ole" werewolf stuff, very original. The book will stay with you a couple days after u finish it. Great characters. Btw. The dog survived. Thank God.
The plot was alright as such stories go, although fairly predictable. A bit difficult to get past the many uses of wrong words, e.g. "past, passed", etc. I will probably not read this writer's work again.
