Randolph Tasker's work on the Gospel of John is a contribution to the Tyndale New Testament Commentaries, a popular study aid designed to help the general Bible reader understand clearly what the text actually says and what it means without going into scholarly technicalities.
A short commentary with great insights and beneficial teaching. However, because the author pushes for an unnecessary position regarding authorship, I cannot give more stars.
The traditional authorship has no reason to be questioned, as the evidence given was entirely unconvincing (though the opinion of the author is not itself malignant to the doctrine of the inspiration of Scripture, it must be noted). If this were merely a preface issue, it would not have been a bother, but some interpretations of some verses are directly affected by this position (again, not causing anything unorthodox).
Like the Tyndale commentary on James, this one is readable while still being well-researched. It will help you deepen your Biblical knowledge and gain insights to apply the Word to your life.
Conservative in outlook and dated in style but with a depth of insight that belies its slim size. Tasker definitely one of the better authors in this series.
