I am a big fan of Count Strahd, the Master of Ravenloft ever since my decades-ago venture into his realm of Barovia where my Ranger and his companions sought to vanquish this foul evil from the land. If played to his intellect, Strahd is a formidable foe, and our Dungeon Master was certainly on point with making this happen, creating both a sense of respect and frustration with this villain we sought to tangle with. Hoping to relive some that experience and horror, I've been holding onto this book for some time. Close to Halloween 2022, I figured now was as good a time as any to venture back into the land of Barovia and face off again with the Master of Ravenloft.

I do not want to give out spoilers for the story, or the way to complete it, but I will say that I was happy and satisfied with this book. There are some dice mechanics to create a sense of random encounters during the exploration and a mechanic to mimic the original module where important items are randomly scattered in different locations throughout Strahd's castle. Those who are familiar with the adventure module will recognize many of the locations and encounters.

Regarding things that could have been executed better, I think there should have been more opportunities to use the various spells, abilities and items provided to your character. You are playing Jeren Sureblade, a 15th-level Paladin with access to various spells, abilities and a starting magical item. Despite this variety of options, you do not have many opportunities to actually use them in the adventure and could pretty much get by with the items you find in the course of exploring (that's pretty much what I did). Also, this book could have used some better editing to clean-up and clarify some areas to avoid later confusion. A couple examples of this include the need to make three Pre-Adventure die rolls that would be very important in the course of adventure. I could not find where this was mentioned in the set-up. There are blank spaces on the character sheet to note the results of these rolls, but this point (and its significance) was not explained and is later deduced in the course of the adventure when they ask you about these results in certain locations. In the section where you read about "Jeren's" various abilities, he is also referred to as "Derrek" and "Derren," and I did have a moment of confusion where I thought that perhaps they were referencing a companion character (which there is one, but it's not Derrek or Deren).

Still, I think this was adequate to for me to get my Ravenloft fix, and I did like some of the game mechanics, which I don't think I've seen before in choose your own adventure style game books before.

I got this book when I was younger and loved it. It's a choose your own adventure type book so the story depends on the choices you make. I think I still have it somewhere. Now I'm going to have to find it so I can read it again. :-)

One of the best gamebooks of the AD&D series as the previous chapter (The Test of the Ninja) was.
Non-linear and highly replayable due to its random encounters.
