The World and the West

s/t: The European Challenge and the Overseas Response in the Age of Empire
This book is a study of the interaction of the Western societies of Europe and America with others around the world in the past two centuries--the age of European empire. Through a variety of case studies, it considers the European threat and the non-Western response, but the focus is on the ways in which people in Asia, African, and Indian America have tried to adapt their ways of life to the overwhelming European power of the period.

This book was interesting, but eclectic.

Curtis's style of writing is simple but the case studies are not in depth enough or well referenced enough to be a deep analysis. It sits in a strange zone between academic writing and popular referencing techniques which makes it slightly textbook-y.

There is a lot to be said for this book despite trouble in categorizing it. He raises interesting points about disparate social responses to Imperialism and tries, altogether not always clearly, to make an argument about the key responses to Western imperial expansion.

I would recommend this book to anyone researching those topics as a primer. Another book that may be of interest, and offers a more in depth analysis, is Priyamvada Gopal's impressive work Insurgent Empire.

Interesting case studies on how various regions and people reacted to European colonialism. Not particularly well written, however, which detracts from the message a bit.

Great read. Has fairly stand alone chapters. If you have read other books by Curtin I found this one much more readable. Great alternative perspectives on Imperialism.

Curtin's work is an interesting and engaging serious of essays dealing with the integration of the non-Western world into modernity. The essays are broad ranging geographically and broken down into numerous sub-units to make an easily digestible read.

: The European Challenge and the Overseas Response in the Age of Empire. Exactly what it says on the tin. Decent overview, but a lot to cover in 270 pages.
