War has kept Admiral Jenetta Carver far from home for twelve years. With the advent of peace, she takes a well-deserved vacation and returns to Earth for a visit before her duties as Military Governor and Supreme Military Commandeer of Region Two prevent such a trip for more years. She picks up her two sisters on the way home and the three women surprise their mom with the unannounced visit.Just a week after arriving home, Jenetta receives word that Region Two has been invaded. No war has been declared, and details are sketchy, but Tsgardi Warriors have landed on at least one planet a hundred light years inside the border and begun rounding up, harassing, and in some cases killing the citizenry. Determined not to let the news interfere with her mother's joy of having her three daughters with her, she doesn't mention the invasion at home, but she's summoned to appear at Space Command Supreme HQ to discuss the situation. As Jenetta begins the trip back to her base, she begins formulating plans and sending orders so that all will be in readiness when she arrives. She's determined to deal with the Tsgardi situation once and for all, and in a manner consistent with the way she dealt with the Milori situation. When an enemy refuses to let you live in peace, the only action you can take is remove their ability to ever wage war against you again. Jenetta doesn't yet know that the Tsgardi thrust into Region Two is just the tip of the lance. Three other interstellar powers have joined the effort to arrogate the new territory before Space Command can move security forces into place. Jenetta's tiny fleet will face an armada a thousand warships strong. It's not just another day at the office. 96,000 Words - 300 Pages
I like this series. It was my first scifi series, so it will always have a special place in my heart and all. Yet, I'm getting tired of the giant build up, just to have there be no danger in the end, the so called " great tactics" are really elementary, and the characters are bland. Also, the series seems to HEAVILY derive from Honor Harrington. Theres a strong female protagonist who is going to live a long time, commands fleets, becomes well known, becomes a member of royalty of another planet, and more. Deprima seems to use too much inspiration from David Weber. So, I have to give him a 2.
This is one of the more action oriented book in the series. It takes the events of the end of the last book and puts them to play in this one. It shows that while the direct threat of being attacked in their old systems is gone the new region 2 area is under threat and not everyone is happy with the changes there. This is a great book and this series is a worthy read.
One of the best Science fiction series/space opera ever
Surprisingly little known series is well worth a read (or two) Of the Honor Harrington Ilk and just as good but doesn't get the big Amazon boost. DePrima had a falling out with Kindle about property rights and stopped publishing on Kindle. One more episode I believe then he tried to sell his books on his own troubled website. That was not successful, a few more (good) books and then... he died.
Continuing effort of Admiral Jenetta Carver and war between the Milori and Tsgardi systems. After their defeat, another stronger region is set on removing Space Command from Region 2. And, in the meantime, the Raider Organization is beginning to rebuild, especially after stealing an Alliance secret. She is one tough, smart cookie!!
This book is as well written as the previous 6 books of this series. The book keeps you entertained throughout the book from the beginning of chapter 1 through the end. Admiral Jennetta Carver continues to show the galaxy what it takes to control the criminals . The war with the Milorie is featured then the war with the THUGs takes place what next for Jenneta ?
I strongly recommend you read the previous books in the series (A Galaxy Unknown, Valor At Vauzlee, The Clones of Mawcett, Trader Vyx, Milor! And Castle Vroman) prior to reading this installment.
This author never fails to pack a whopping outstanding story into each installment. Most authors start getting stale in any series by book 7, however the Galaxy Unknown series just keeps getting better and better; with more and more thrills, mysteries and excitement in each installment.
This installment was as solid and consistent as the other books in this series. There was a nice balance of Jen and family, lots of "aliens", action and space battles too boot! This book was so compelling, I didn't want it to end. The usual rhetorical book review words such as entranced, enthralled and mesmerized really do apply here. This story completely captured my attention and I reluctantly put this book down, only when I was forced to.
To those fellow dark urban fantasy readers, looking for a good SF but don't want to end up with space romance; I highly recommend this book to you, as the style of writing is similar to a urban fantasy read.
I eagerly and impatiently await the next book tentative title "Return to Dakistee", tentatively due out fall 2011, featuring Christa Carver as the main protagonist. I also recommend: Song of Scarabaeus Space Trippers Book 1: Trippin' The Darkest Edge of Dawn (Charlie Madigan, Book 2) Crimson Wind (Horngate Witches) Bayou Moon (The Edge, Book 2)
DePrima has maintained the high standard set in his previous novels, in Against All Odds, the seventh novel in his Galaxy Unknown series. Jenetta Carver continues to upset her colleages and enrage her enemies with her unique style of leadership and warfare, all the while growing more comfortable with both her responsibilities and with Arneu's legacy of near-immortality.
Nearly all the key characters (those still living...) from the 6 previous novels make an appearance somewhere in this newest novel, a sign, perhaps, of the author's original intention of it being the final book in the series. Yet instead, the result is more of a reunion and a strengthening of old friendships/bonds, implying all will be needed if the Gallactic Alliance is to survive future events. There are definite signs of more trouble heading Jenetta's way and I look forward to reading more of her adventures in the future. For the first time, the next release will be longer in coming than ever before as DePrima is in the midst of writing it now (unlike the first seven which had all been written several years ago) but I have no doubt it will be well worth the wait.
Still a declining series, but this time we get to see flashes of what we liked about Janetta Carver in the first book. Her almost child like joy of speed, an unorthodox approach to combat, devious plots by Admiral Carver when dealing with the GAC.
Same complaints.... no wonder the GAC conqured space. All other alien races encountered are complete idiots. The Pirates are spineless, unenthusiastic and no where to be scene. This reads more like a summary of Jenneta Carver's life and less like the story of it.
There are signs of life though. I just want to know, when, if ever is anything going to challenge, or even look harder than eating breakfast to the main characters? Conquering the Galazy just looks too easy to me.
i loved this book it tells of the galactics alliances expansion into the galaxy
though i must agree with the late admiral hubera on this point it seems like she is trying to conquer the galaxy like shes starting to become a monster i Believe that is the overall point in the last admirelaty board metting were hubera has a heart attack though i do not agree with his way of dismissing admiral carters achevments
it is my belef that in the last few books she will become an enemy of the galactic alliance though this is all simply my opinion
I've blasted through this series and expect the next book(s) to be just as awesome. One thing that I've noticed is you seem to write about space being in 2 dimensions. Not all star systems or planets are in a line. A ship can also enter an area from the star's polar regions. Otherwise, I've been totally thrilled with this series. :)
Oh so sorry. You thought the action was over? Nope, still lots of bad guys running around who need to learn the error of their ways...
Not one, not two, not three, but four different stellar governments have decided to invade area two. Just to make things fun, it is a sneak attack that Carver will never see coming... You know while it sounds good on paper, it really is a bad idea.
So, it's book 7 in a never ending hornblower-in-space series. If that isn't appealing you wouldn't be here.
Overall, I think DePrima is getting better at writing his "catch up summary" stuff, which was always his weakest point. The space battles in this one lacked some of the drama of earlier books, but I'm not complaining. On to book 8!
I like the story, but not the writing style. The author likes to let characters explain in length, and since different characters (or the narrator) have explained the same in a previous book in almost the same way, their personalities become unclear to me. Sometimes I feel that all the characters in the book are clones of the author.
Much better than the last couple of books have been. Not as boring and it felt more like the first book. More excitement and a better story. I'm bummed the Trader Vyx wasn't in this one as much. I hope it won't be a really long time before he writes the next one!
I have fished reading all of the Thomas Deprima Galaxy Unknown books in the series as well as Ciizen X. I know that they are all just low priced scifi reads but they are fun to read. I only wish that new books by Deprima were available on Amazon.
Again, the first 2/3 of the book is heat. The finish is a fizzle. No action, no heart brake, no emotion. Unfortunate. The last two books were the same in that. Not sure it's worth continuing.
I've read the 10 first books so obviosly this is a good enough series. Not as good as David Weber's Honnor Harington, but if you liked that one... you'll like this one.
Don't expect very mulidimensional caracters, but a fun exciting read.
Good story. Fast paced. Plot a little far fetched. Tisgardi, Hudeera, Uthlaro, and Gondusan all team up against her. Naturally they are called the T.H.U.G. Pact. It's like the author just went for the simplest abbreviation he could find. Lost a star just for this.
I am devouring this series as fast as I can downloaded to my Kindle. OMG the joy and wonder you get out of reading a really fun and engrossing series. I really liked this cast of character that have room to grow. The story wove and bent in different directions that I found enjoyable.
