Settle back with these stories of America's early years and watch your children's eyes light up with interest and patriotism. Mr. Morris's narratives, originally published in 1901, make you feel as if you are listening to a kindly grandfather recounting tales from his past. Volume 1 presents stories from Columbus through the Alamo (about 1850).
This is our second time to read this book together as a part of our homeschool studies. This time I'm using it with grades 2, 4, 7, and 10; last time I used it with grades 1 and 4. Of course they all have individual on-level reading too, but this is what we read together as a family. There are sometimes details left out that I wish were included, and sometimes I've even written one into the margin, but we end up getting those details and more in our other books anyway. This one is easy to read and good to keep everyone's attention and tie it all together. It also includes things we would have missed out on in our other books too... so it's been a keeper for us.
Such an easy read and contains lesser - known important moments from American history. I ended up using this as a spine for (elementary) American history because it is so thorough, and supplemented with other books as we went.
Read this aloud to my kids for school. The chapter on the Native American Indians was very disappointing...it seemed very one sided...the side of the white settlers.
