The first three books in the Downside Ghosts series are now available in this ebook bundle.
The world is not as it once was. The dead have risen and constantly attack the living. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Consequently, there are many claims of hauntings from those hoping to profit.
Chess Putnam, witch and drug addict, investigates these claims as a debunker for the Church. However, Chess owes a murderous drug lord named Bump a lot of money. And Bump wants immediate payback. All Chess has to do is dispatch a very nasty species of undead from an old airport. But the job involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and crossing swords with enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust with a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump′s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it...
Stacia Kane is the author of the light-hearted romantic urban fantasy "Megan Chase" series starting with PERSONAL DEMONS.
She currently writes the gritty dystopian urban fantasy "Downside" series starring Chess Putnam and featuring ghosts, human sacrifice, drugs, witchcraft, punk rock, and a badass '69 Chevelle. She bleaches her hair and wears a lot of black.
4 stars. Audiobook. I'm counting the entire 5-book series as 1 for my annual reading count and review. These are a favorite from quite a few years ago and I really like the narrator -- Bahni Turpin did an awesome job as expected -- so I decided to give them another go in audio. The thing is... a 5-book binge is a little too much time to spend in Chess's head. Her repetitive self loathing and claiming responsibility for every bad thing that happens with ZERO growth is exhausting. And as much as I love Terrible, let's be honest, he's an enabler and his relationship with Chess is not a healthy one. If Kane ever gets around to writing the 6th book I BEG her to let Chess hit bottom and have realistic consequences for being an addict. There's no way she could be this functioning in real life.
What do I think? What do I think? FUCKING AWESOME. I'm speechless. What a great book. I wish I hated the book. I'm better at ranting. The heroine (haha) is real, gritty, drugged out and freaking badass. Her leading man is well real, gritty, and well read the book and you will see. I couldn't put these books down. I ignored my child so I can finish this book. I hope she forgives me :P This book made me cringe, laugh, cry, and had me at the edge of my seat. This is what a paranormal book should be. Make us care, hate, love and be pissed at our heroine. I enjoyed this book. IF you want a cute and breezy book keep on walking. This shit is real and badass. :D
Just like Chess and Terrible...and LEX ok and Blu :D
You know the first moment you pick up a book your brain recognises instantly that you won't like it? That was me with this series. I was pleasantly surprised at the depth in Downside Ghosts and although it isn't bite-my-nails-anxiously-on-its-first-day-of-release worthy, I would recommend reading for the sake of balance. If you're a UF or PNR fan that is.
One thing though...Chess and Terrible...REALLY?
If you're into self reflection, the character questioning every damn decision ever made and self loathing then read this. It's an in-your-face, no holds barred look at a gritty world that seems all too real.
loved this, dont let the downside dialect put you off, love it! Chess can remind us all that we mught have issues, we might be very messed up but we are still worthy. And terrible is my book boyfriend you cant gave him
