Rate this book
Billy Getten really wants a dog. He’s so dog crazy that he eats dog biscuits! But Billy’s parents won’t give in. They say he’s too irresponsible. Then Billy meets the dog of his dreams. Can Billy convince his parents that he’s ready for a pet before the most wonderful dog in the world gets adopted by someone else?

“This short chapter book offers good role models; strong, three-generational family relationships; and a smooth message about friendship. The soft, expressive black-line drawings will help draw readers.”— Booklist

this was not a great children's book. the characters were pretty bland, as well as the plot. the pots spans about 2 or 3 days. in that time, Billy goes from being a totally irresponsible kid, to showing his parents he's responsible enough to take care of a dog. he does this by babysitting his sister one time.

Billy really likes dogs. He wants to get one. One day, a stray comes. Billy rally like it. He hopes somebody doesn't adopt it. On the day before his birthday, Billy is sad because the dog is gone. But, his family actually hid the dog for his birthday! Billy is so happy. He finally gets a dog.

Read with our son who enjoyed the story somewhat less than I did. Billy demonstrates poor choices at first, and then shows responsibility which is ultimately rewarded.
