A collection of short illustrated poems decribes various things that the imaginative young reader might fear or worry about, including a mummy, a pirate, and giant ants. A first book.
Andy Rash is an excellent illustrator. You’ve probably seen some of his work before. His illustrations are always interesting, sometimes detailed, and usually extraordinarily accurate, even if they’re done in big pixels (iotacons). You can see some of them on his (old) blog: http://andyrash.blogspot.com/ or on his portfolio site: http://www.rashworks.com/.
The inside of the book says the artwork is done in “gouache and india ink on Arches watercolor paper.” I had to look up gouache, so if you, like me, are unsure of what that is, I get the impression that it is basically like watercolor but it can be mixed to be more opaque.
The book is a collection of illustrated poems on topics ranging from robots to giant ants, and it is fantastic! It has lots of fun words for kids to learn. There’s rhythm and rhyme, and the illustrations are just outstanding! I think this book would’ve made me laugh and laugh as a kid. It made me laugh as an adult!
While I probably couldn’t get through the whole book in my library’s storytime, I think we could probably make it through a couple of poems. Five out of five stars!
We got this book for my son who at the time was only 3-4yrs old. While the artwork is stunning. My wife and I both agree that this book of short stories is more appropriate for older children maybe 8-10yrs old. My son thinks this book is very silly, and he likes to hear the rhymes about the robots, and androids. As I said before the artwork is the best part of this book. The rhymes are kind of lacking in a majority of the stories, and some are just plain dumb.
This was my favorite book as a kindergartner. I can still remember laughing at the devil, voodoo dolls, and werewolves while the other children read Dr. Seuss. This is definitely something I'm going to read to my children.
My 7 year old son loves poetry now! He wanted to hear this book again & again. Fun and funny collection of poems for kids, with a sort of monsterish bent.
This book of rhyming poetry will be very entertaining for readers. Like some of my other choices, I hope it will get students excited about poetry when they see it isn't always serious.
