Poor pathetic little women just did not know what she was thinking. She just needed a big strong man to bring her to her senses! That's 3 hours I'll never get back....

I'm usually a big fan of Debbie Macomber books. However, I could not finish this one. Maybe emotional rape is cute and manly in Oregon (story's setting) but insistence that a woman can not make decisions for herself or holding her to a statement she said while drunk and emotional distraught is not ok in the real world. Not even a little bit romantic. Shame on you!

2.5 rounded to 3 stars.
Have you ever loathed a book so much that you struggled to finish it? That was me with the second of these two novellas.
The first one was okay; a nice little romance. But the second was TERRIBLE. The two main characters were so bad. Luke was way too forceful, typically mansplaining to Kate what she needed. And Kate was portrayed as a stubborn ninny who could not get out of her own way and needed to be told what to do. Ugh. Save yourself the trouble and skip this one.

A Little Bit Country (1990) ⭐️⭐️½
Country Bride (1990)⭐️⭐️⭐️

My thoughts: 32 of 376/395 A Little Bit Country Ch. 3 - I had to Google MGB. I don't feel bad since now I know it was old and rare in 1990. I've seen them and never knew the name. The plot is ridiculous, very Hallmark.
📖 81 Ch. 7 - This is how I imagined 70s romance novels are; dramatically polite friction. Nevertheless, I didn't see that coming; it's so hackneyed. I don't know if this story puts me to sleep or if I'm willing to sleep to get a break from it. These characters could be in Bedford Falls and fit right in.
📖 201 Country Bride Ch. 1 - A Little Bit Country was a snoozefest. The characters were flat, and the way everyone sat idly by and let others dictate their future was severely outdated and disappointing. I hope the next book is better.
📖 268 Country Bride Ch. 5 - I don't know what trope this is, but it's the opposite of that last one. If I had read one of these books as a standalone, I would have been upset; I see why they were thrown together. I like this one a lot better than the last one, although the plot is unbelievable.

There is so much to unwrap here. Let's start with the publications. A Little Bit Country was first published in January 1990, and its sequel (unclaimed) Country Bride was released in June 1990. The stories are practically one. Country Bride starts at the end of A Little Bit Country and even has multiple recaps of events from the first story, yet there isn't a series or anything connecting the two. In October 1991 a double feature of both books was released titled Country Brides. I just happened to find it because of the similar titles on Goodreads. So A Little Bit Country is just a retitled publication of Country Brides, there is also the 2016 Country Bride with RaeAnne Thayne that features Country Bride by Macomber and Woodrose Mountain by Thayne. I get so annoyed when things like this happen. I once read a series by Shelley Shepard Gray and it was nearly 2 years before I discovered a spinoff series in the same town. Anyway, these stories were just okay. For some reason A Little Bit Country was annoying and although Country Bride had similar delusions the vibe just made it better. To be honest, despite enjoying Country Bride, until the last quarter, Kate got on my nerves in both books. I don't think the plot of either book aged well, I'm surprised it wasn't an issue in 1990 as sexual harassment was alive in the late 80s. Guys refusing to take no for answer, and the "I'll give my all until you want me" trope, isn't romantic.

Recommend to others?: No. This story is a bit disappointing.

3.5 A Country Affair is made up of two earlier books published in 1990 and 2003. A Little Bit Country is the story of Rorie Campbell, a young woman whose car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately a young cowboy comes along on his horse and gets his brother to help. Clay Franklin is a gruff rancher who offers to let Rorie stay at the family home while her car is being repaired. Stuck in the quirky small town, Rorie gets to know Clay, his brother and his girlfriend, Kate. If you have read Debbie Macomber's books before you know what is going to happen next. The second story, Country Bride takes place a year later. Kate Logan is devastated when her former fiancé marries someone else. At the wedding, and after champagne, she spontaneously proposes to her longtime friend Luke Rivers. And Luke agrees. The next day Kate wants to forget what happened, but Luke won't let her and he is going to prove to Kate that they are perfect for each other.

I enjoyed both of these stories and they were exactly what I have come to expect from Debbie Macomber's older books. They are clean, sweet and yes, a bit predictable. The characters are likeable, kind and caring. I don't know if I could be as forgiving as Kate, but it is nice that she is so that she can move on with her life. I did enjoy the first story more than the second, but both were enjoyable. The narration by both Karen White and Vanessa Johansson was pleasant to listen to. Both of these talented ladies add emotion, inflection and tone to the story. Listening to this audiobook was a nice way to spend an afternoon. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

I've never read Debbie Macomber but I heard a lot of good reviews on her books. Country Brides is a compilation of two story of two couples. I have read a lot of comments about this book on Goodreads as well as Amazon. Although most of them were not really giving such good comments and rates, I think this book didn't really let me down. It's a romance type and a very quick read. Can't blame on the fast pace of how the story was told for a love at first sight. This a good book if you are looking for something that doesn't take much thinking and is easy to read. It's a book that make you relax that holds interest at the end of a long day and this one filled the request. Voila!

Macomber definitely an excellent writer as I was easily absorbed with this book. The simplicity of the storyline, of how she created a very down to earth scenario is absolutely how a love at first would be. Maybe it sounds a little bit corny, but I love it. While the second story is actually a chronology from the first story. Kate, the ex-fiancee of Clay is trying to figure out how she could find her own happiness after the man she loves married someone else. Turn out the happiness she was looking for is actually a man who is always next to her. Someone who is really really confident that 'he's the man' for her.

I love reading the book and I am sure that the time spent reading this book is worth a tiny bit something. One thing for sure, this book will definitely not be the last book of her I'll read.

Cheese cheese CHEESE. All the cheese in the world. But you kind of enjoy it.

Rorie & Clay - 3 stars
While I had a hard time supporting the love interest because I cannot get behind any form of cheating, I was a bit mollified later on when circumstances were revealed. But I would have some pretty intense reservations towards a man who wasn't upfront and honest from the beginning (as should a man towards me if I was the same). Yay for strong female friendships, even though they barely know each other.

Kate & Luke - 1 star
Absolutely hated this one. It was VERY infuriating how Luke does not listen to Kate. He's like the evil guy pursuing the girl who doesn't get a hint that she doesn't want him and insists they will be married but instead of being able to get him off her back she instead falls for his manipulative ways and falls in love with him. And Kate, for being a character I kind of liked in the first book lost all my respect in this second book. She was not the strong character that she was originally portrayed in the first book.

I'm a sucker for these Debbie Macomber books. I got this one while on my girls trip in Naples, FL and I read the whole book on the plane ride home. This was a quick, easy read and an ideal book to read on a plane due. I personally wouldn't to read books that are quite so "fluffy" all the time, but occasionally I love a good romance and this fit the bill perfectly!

This is two different stories, although I didn’t realize that at first and read the second one first, which honestly was okay, but I enjoyed the second one much more after reading the first one.

Rorie and Clay are characters in the first novel, and I love their sweet romance. The story is clean, and a little silly at times, and has drama at others. Over all though I thought it was cute, and I really enjoyed it!

I love Skip, Clay’s kid brother, is my favorite character. He was such a kind energetic young man, and such a sweetheart to Rorie from the very beginning! Sometimes he seemed to act a little younger then his age, but really I just loved him!

Kate is so sweet, kind hearted, loving, and understanding. She was honestly such a doll in the first novel. I was rather disappointed that she acted so dramatic and childish in the second one. However I was also able to see her prospective and her thoughts better after reading the first book. I did find it sad though that it took her so long to see her true feelings for Clay.

Luke was so kind in the first novel, and his temper frustrated me several times in the second one. I hated that he called Kate Princess, it always seemed mocking, and that’s what her dad called her, so I didn’t like when he would try to use that term of endearment. However I loved when Luke called her Darling, it truly felt like he was sincere and cared for her. I hated that he would boss Kate around, and get so upset with her. If only he’d been straight about his feelings from the beginning he could have saved them all a lot of trouble. However as I thought about it when reading the book a second time I realized his insistence that Kate needed him was because he felt that was all he really had to offer her was himself, he needed her to need him, and he wanted her to feel like she needed him more then her dad or Clay. Still if he’d just told her how long he’d cared for her things would have gone much smoother, but that would’ve made for a much shorter story, hahaha.

Over all I truly enjoyed both of these clean romance stories, and will recommends them to friends in the future.

Book one: so when I bought this book, I didn’t realize it was written in 1990 lol, so it was a little weird reading a book that wasn’t historical but they didn’t have phones, and how they acted sometimes was a little unrealistic to me but the story and plot and characters were still really interesting lol. Although I did wanted Clay and Rorie to get together, i still thought it was wrong that while Clay was *technically* engaged to Kate, they just couldn’t “contain” themselves from kissing each other behind her back. I think what Kate did in the end was really selfless

Book 2: so, the second book is about Kate and Luke. Ofc, I shipped them two cause it was like a friends to lovers thing, but even though Kate proposed to like when she was drunk, it was a little weird how much Like tried to like convince Kate that she was in love with her and trying to get him to still marry her even though she was drunk when said it? Ofc she realized she loved him later one, but I still found it kinda weird. Still though, it was good.

A little bit Country was excellent. Loved it.
Country Bride was ohhhh soooo boring. With Luke repeating on and on and on he cared, and Kate repeating on and on and on she didnt care enough to marry him.
Made me want to throw the book in frustration.
Finished it though.😠

I really love reading Debbie Macomber's books, but this was not one of my favorites.

This book broken down into 2 love stories. The first story (1st half of the book) I loved. A women from Los Angelos has her car brake down in a desolate country area. She is rescued by handsome rancher and they fall in love. I loved that story.

However, the second story (2nd half of the book) was a let down. The second story is linked to the first; the story centers on the characters in the first story but it was just not that good.

A good sweet romance read.

I liked "A Little Bit Country" more than I liked "Country Bride." However there were times in both stories that I could have given the heroines a swift kick in the butt and told them to get a move on with things. How naive can one be?
