I was born into an army family and most of my childhood was spent moving from school to school, including periods of living in Egypt and Germany. Some schools I loved and some I hated, so it wasn't too surprising that I left before completing my examinations.

I became a secretary but realised almost immediately that the role of handmaiden simply wasn't for me. Escape beckoned when I landed a job with an airline. I was determined to see as much of the world as possible and working as cabin crew I met some very interesting people and enjoyed some great experiences - riding in the foothills of the Andes, walking the shores of Lake Victoria, flying pilgrims from Kandahar to Mecca.

The arrival of marriage and children meant a more settled life in the south of England where I've lived ever since. It also gave me the opportunity to go back to ‘school’ and eventually gain a PhD. For many years I taught English at a number of universities and loved every minute of it. What could be better than spending my life reading and talking about books? Well, writing them perhaps.

Writing was an idea I enjoyed thinking about but there never seemed time to do more than dabble with the occasional short story. And I was always aware of a critical voice in my head telling me not to bother! But gradually the voice grew fainter and the idea that I might actually write a whole book began to take hold. I'd always felt an affinity with the 19th century and grew up reading Georgette Heyer, so when I finally plucked up the courage to begin writing, the novels had to be Regency romances.

I was delighted to learn just before Christmas 2009 that my first book, Reprobate Lord, Runaway Lady, had been accepted for publication. Since then I've published two further Regencies and a Victorian timeslip, Walking Through Glass. I'm getting immense pleasure from creating new worlds and sharing them with readers.

Meh. Not appalling, but it's not going to linger in my mind forever either. I don't normally go for the "I don't want to marry HIM! I'm going to run away!" plots because they tend to be heavy on the flouncing and light on the common sense. This one was better than most in that regard. I wouldn't call Amelie Silverdale a rocket scientist, but I wouldn't consider one of the dread feisty heroines either. Basically she comes off as a scared kid trying to get away from betrothal to an eeeevil nobleman and whenever she runs into roadblocks along the way, she tries to brazen it out. She actually does manage to do a fair amount of self-rescuing, so even if she sometimes annoyed me, I have to give her credit for that.

What made this book fall apart for me was the romance - or lack of it. When running away from home, Amelie falls right into the clutches of Gareth Denville, a disgraced nobleman who is intent on an escape of sorts himself. Amelie tells Gareth she is a runaway servant, and he gets her away from the house but it's obvious he views her as an "amusement." While Gareth doesn't manage to take advantage of Amelie, I did resent his treatment of her at first even if he did redeem himself a bit later. I kept on reading, though, and made it all the way to the end. The book sags quite a bit in the middle, with a plot that just meanders, and by the end, I found myself feeling pretty disengaged from the romance.

This book had all the elements of a good plot and a truly dastardly villain. However I could not quite warm to our hero Gareth who did not really amount to anything until the end of the book hence 2.5 stars.

Pretty good! It was obvious it was a debut story because of the many common themes in the novel found in early romantic fiction..

- girl meets boy and they love-hate each other,
- horrible older man chases girl and is responsible for boy's earlier but undeserved downfall,
- boy and girl end up on the run from evil fellow and no one believes the man is bad except for the boy and girl,
- the boy and girl realize they are in love and, of course, don't let the other know because of pride or other lame reason,
- and, finally, the only real description of their bonding is second base (twice) and a quaint and quick homerun, lol

I will probably read IG's follow-up novel if it crosses my path but we'll see.

This is a typical Harlequin Historical romance. It was a quick read and was a pleasant diversion. It had the expected characters: the naive but spirited young woman of the upper class, disapproving family members, a dashing but somewhat disreputable love interest, the evil meany bent on dastardly doings and the expected happy ending.

It is good for what it is. It isn't serious literature but it is entertaining.

I recommend this book.

Ne vous attendez pas à la romance du siècle. Ce n’est pas transcendant et ne laissera pas un souvenir impérissable. J’ai eu du mal à le finir tellement certains scènes n’étaient pas crédibles.

The characters are good, the dialogue likewise and the story a classic plot. I loved the first half of this story, the second was so-so.
