This book had a weight to it that I wasn’t expecting. I guess I’ve come to associate shifter books in Paranormal Romance with mating games, dominance plays, and a group of badass guys running around sweeping women off their feet. There’s nothing wrong with that but I love when a book comes along and shakes things up for me. The shifters in this book don’t change into animals. They’re actually a group of aliens that have the ability to change their shape into any human whose DNA they have come in contact with. They have no rights on Earth and there’s conflict between the humans over how they should be treated. This setup is not unfamiliar in real life and it really helped to develop an authentic conflict between the protagonists.

Cam and Griffin stand on opposite ends with their regard for shifters. Cam is a shifter, so obviously she’s for shifter rights and wants them to be left in peace. She has no illusions about the human’s regard for her species. This is not the first time the survivors of her species have traveled to a new planet to try again. The last one they tried didn’t appreciate them either. Cam has a wry, accepting manner that made it easy to sympathize with. She isn’t bitter about their lot in life, although she is sad. She’s a survivor who rolls with the punches. I really loved how strong she was, especially when it came to her relationship with Griffin.

As I said, Griffin stands opposite of Cam in his opinion of shifters. He flat out hates them. His whole life was ruined by one and he is still picking up the pieces. He has no trust for a people that can change their appearance at will. They could be anyone, do anything, and that’s what they do. They’re not all malicious, but to fit in on Earth they spend their day to day lives in human form. That means that they’re running around with someone else’s face. What’s to stop them from taking over their life too?

I understood where both sides were coming from, but it took me longer to understand Griffin’s point of view than it did to understand Cam’s. I was shocked to find that Cam didn’t join the XCEL team voluntarily like I thought she did, based on some assumptions I had going into the book. Griffin was the agent who led the way in capturing her and blackmailing her into doing what they asked. I had a hard time liking him in the beginning and prayed that the author would pull off a believable slide into love. She did, thank goodness.

Cam and Griffin are attracted to each other, but they aren’t very happy about it. Cam fought it less than Griffin, but she had her moments of bitterness and resentment toward him and his views. Griffin slowly came to see the species in a different light based on his slow fall into love with Cam. Getting to know her and working alongside her opened his eyes to the fact that they are not all the same. There are good people who have had a rough life. They didn’t come to Earth to irritate the humans. They were just trying to save themselves.

I really enjoyed the characters we met. Cam and Griffin were great, but I also loved their nerdy little champion in XCEL and Griffin’s grandfather. I know that we didn’t see much of the grandfather beyond the phone messages he left, but Griffin’s regard of him made him standout in my mind. I originally wasn’t sure what I thought of the Native American mysticism running through the book, but I ended up enjoying it a lot. The grandfather’s messages nicely highlighted Griffin’s slow change of opinion toward Cam and they also provided a nice starting point for us to learn more about his past.

This was a fast paced PNR that had a strong Romantic Suspense feel to it. The characters and their development were great and I really enjoyed watching the storyline unfold. There were strong characters, great action scenes, and a wonderful love story. The only complaint I had was that the end wrapped up a little too quickly. The book ends with a definite HEA between them, but I would have liked just a tad more time spent on wrapping it up.

Favorite Quote:
"And if you get any closer, you're going to get what you want."

She felt her eyes widen. "And what is it I want?"

Mercer's palm wrapped around the back of her neck and brought her lips to his--a fraction of an inch away. She felt the fire ignite in her belly with anticipation.

"Trouble," he whispered. "And not the kind you're looking for."

That intrigued her. "You want it too."

He peered into her eyes. "No, I don't. I'm already in as deep as I want to get."

"Really?" she said and bushed her lips against his.

"You can't just take whatever you want," he said, but his pulse was getting faster by the second. Maybe he was right and she shouldn't be pushing him. Still, curiosity gnawed at her.

She ran her lips over his and breathed, "Chicken."

Body Thief, The Body #2, by C.J. Barry
Grade: D

“You want me, but you hate yourself for it. You want your old life back, but you know it wasn’t much of a life. You don’t know where you fit in, and you’re too afraid to find out.”

Griffen Mercer had his life ruined by shapeshifters. His wife left him, his credit is ruined, his partner is dead and he was framed for the murder. As a shapeshifter hunter and one of the few humans that can identify and freeze a shifter, Mercer has gotten his old job back and he is determined to prove his innocence. When shifters start setting fires around New York Mercer is assigned a new partner, Camille Solomon who just so happens to be a shifter, the one thing Mercer hates in this world.

Camille Solomon, aka Cam, has spent the few years she’s been on her robbing casinos with her father. Now that he is sick and a special government agency has captured them both, she has no choice but to help bring down her own people. Working with Mercer turns out to be harder then she thought, not only does he hate shifters but they have unbelievable chemistry that neither can deny. Cam and Mercer are the only ones who can figure out what the truth is before the entire world goes up in flames.

Body Thief is C.J. Barry’s second installment of her Body series which is all based on shapeshifters. The shapeshifters are aliens and come to Earth after they were almost killed to the point of extinction on their last planet. A shifter needs just one strand of DNA from a person and they are able to take on that persons form for however long they wish. I loved the concept of this book but the delivery wasn’t very good and I found myself very bored throughout most of it.

I think the biggest issue that I had with Body Thief was that it took way to long for anything exciting to happen especially the relationship between Mercer and Cam. I found myself not being able to focus on the story and daydreaming because nothing could keep my attention. When things did start to happen I had already checked out and just wanted to finish the book so it would be over. This book took me way longer to read then normal because I found it to be more of a chore then entertainment.

As I said earlier I really liked the shifter concept and thought it was very original. I also liked Mercer and Cam but not enough to care about what they were going through or how they felt. I found the Navajo Indian grandfather to be the only character that I really enjoyed and I looked forward to when he would pop up and be interesting. I wish that he would have had a bigger role because he made me think about his riddles and focus instead of thinking about other things going on in my life.

I find it hard to write about this book because nothing fun and exciting happened. I had very high hopes after reading the first couple of pages but then the whole book took a very bad turn and could never get back on track. I will not be reading anymore of this series.

BODY THIEF by C.J. Barry is the second book in The Body series which is a paranormal romance/science fiction mashup. Don’t let the science fiction part scare you off since the ‘aliens’ in this book are shapeshifters. Honestly apart from a few references to the Shifters home planet, you could really read this as a straight paranormal romance.

The writing and subtle worldbuilding is quite good. I picked up on a bit of an Alias vibe when it started out with Cam having to work together with Agent Griffin, which I loved. But I feel like I should have really loved this book and can’t quite put my finger on why it was just a good but not great read. I’m going to chalk it up to a mix of things that on their own wouldn’t have made a difference, but added up together ended up costing BODY THIEF another bat.

As a story telling device, I’m not a fan of villain POV chapters and there were a handful of those here. There were also a few reoccurring scenes that involving phone messages that never seemed to serve a real purpose. Also there were some unique abilities that Griffin possessed that were never explained. My main issue, however, was with the characters. I just never found their chemistry believable. Griffin had just had his entire live irrevocably destroyed by a Shifter who impersonated him for months. Camille was in a desperate search to find her long lost brother in order to help cure her father who was dying from ‘alien cancer’. Considering their situations, I just didn’t buy that either one of them would be overcome by attraction during the short period of time they were together.

Overall, I enjoyed the writing and premise of the BODY THIEF very much, but a combination of factors kept it from being a really fantastic read for me. It did open my eyes to what a paranormal/science fiction romance could be like and I think it’s a genre I’ll read in the future. Feel free to jump right into this book as it’s a completely contained story, however if you want more background info about Shifters and how they ended up on earth, you can check out the first book in The Body series, BODY MASTER. There is no word yet on future books.

Shapeshifters, an alien race from another planet, try to settle here on earth. They've fled their previous planet because of hostilities with the natives. The shifters have an ability to take on the appearance of any human- dead or alive- using that human's DNA. Most are peaceful and just want to live their live.
XCEL is like the FBI/CIA dedicated to hunting down shifters. Most people aren't able to tell shifters from humans, except a handful of people who have the ability to see shadows around shifters and thus identify them. Griffen is one such individual. The previous book's main female protagonist could as well. What they have in common is Native American ancestry. Griffen was betrayed by his shifter partner and thus hates all shifters.
Cam is a shifter who ends up "helping" XCEL hunt down shifters that are arsonists. However, things aren't what they seem. Cam and Griffen start out as enemies and, because this is a romance and we want a HEA, they fall for each other. About halfway through the book Griffen started to see Cam not as an enemy, but as someone who could be more.
Overall, I enjoyed this and this entertained me. Cam was a favorite character. She is honest, direct, and asked very pointed questions. I liked how she called Griffen out on his bullshit. I liked Sani and would have liked to see more of him.

Body Thief by C J Barry
Futuristic Paranormal Romance Nov. 1st, 2011
4 stars

C.J. Barry returns to her spectacular futuristic paranormal series with this second book that can easily be read by itself.

Camille Solomon is an alien shapeshifter scamming the casinos for money when she is approached by the government officials. They blackmail her to work for them and find other shifters. Although she does not want to betray her fellow shifters, her dying father is being held hostage and his only hope for survival lies in the devious and cold hands of an ex-XCEL agent named Griffin Mercer.

Griffin is bitter after his shifter partner impersonated him and damaged his marriage and his career. Now he wants his revenge and using the beautiful Camille is the only way to ‘get back.’ But his superiors seem to be yanking his chain with strange assignments, and his unwanted attraction and sympathy for Camille start to take a hold of him. Will he choose to trust Camille and his heart or stay loyal to a suspicious boss who is keeping him in the dark?

Fast paced with a strong storyline that makes the reader want to figure out the mystery behind Griffin’s true assignment, this is a story that will suck you in. What is his boss’s agenda? Where does Camille fit in? And who are the shifters they are tracking down? I really enjoyed the sassy, strong, yet vulnerable Camille. She will do anything for her father even if it means working with a despicable and embittered ex-XCEL agent. Griffin is an interesting character who has a lot of development through the story. I only wish that Griffin had been less stubborn and bitter for so long. His prejudice prevents him from opening up to the possibility that Camille may be a person to respect and care for. I enjoyed this well written novel but overall liked her prior book, the Body Master, better. It seemed to lack some of the intensity in the first book.

A stirring and exciting paranormal series that shifter and futuristic fans will definitely enjoy.

Paranormal/Science Fiction

Body Thief is the second book in this series. Set in a near future Earth the Shifters have crash-landed and have no place else to go. Their home planet was rendered unlivable when an asteroid hit their moon. The survivors fled to a near by planet and were allowed to settle. They were never trusted and fled where the planet’s natives started hunting and killing any shifters they could find. Their name comes from their ability to use DNA to mimic the any human form. Like the inhabitants of the other planet Shifters are not welcomed on Earth and many are hunted and killed.

I love this concept and in Body Thief it is used to make a compelling story. Shape shifter Camille Solomon has a problem. Her father is ill and she needs to find her brother if there is to be any hope of a cure. Then she is caught by Griffin Mercer and forced to work to track other Shifters. Mercer hates all shifters. His partner took his identity, stole his wife, killed a man while in using his shape and landed Mercer in prison. He has been given one chance to get his life back and that means he must work with Camille.

Set in Las Vegas, Body Thief is filled with tension and danger. The job Mercer and Camille are given is not what it seems. It is hard to tell who the good guys are. This is a story with many twist and turns. The plot is great, the world building is believable, the side characters are well drawn, and the passion and romance develop as everything unfolds.

I was immediately drawn into the story making this another book I had trouble putting down.

3.5 actually. Because it's written as a standalone, it's a bit confusing after reading the previous book in the series. Set some 5 years later (apparently), with a whole new set of issues, and an equally whole new set of complications, I found myself picking up the previous book just to reassure myself that they really did only have a few things connecting them. Still interesting, but I'm still trying to picture a shifter in his/her primary form. And who told them they couldn't reproduce with humans? Or is it only possible with special humans.

So the H is half navajo, and has "special" abilities. It kinda makes one wonder though if the Indian blood is why. He has issues after a shifter partner impersonated him - and boinked his wife, ran up a mountain of debt, killed someone apparently, and got him incarcerated. She's a shifter. 'nuff said. His "boss" is trying to get government permission to exterminate shifters. He eventually gets suspicious, partially because she's questioning things and... the rest is somewhat predictable I guess. You know, I miss the humor in the author's previous series (Bob-zillas anyone?) These are lacking in that department.

Cam and Griffin are perfect for each other! Griffin was burned by a Shifter in the past, one that ruined his entire life and got him imprisoned. He holds a real grudge against this race of alien beings who have been chased off their last planet by systematic genocide. Cam is a hard-nosed cynic who believes in looking out for herself and her father, and no one else.
Together, they have to find a way to thwart an evil plan to kill Shifters everywhere, which also might just kill humans too.

This book was a wonderful addition to the series and I enjoyed reading it even more than book one. The chemistry was instant and hot between Cam and Griffin, though in my opinion, it took them too long to put aside their doubts and differences and give in to their mating urges. :-) When they did, though, it was explosive!

I thought the first book was way better than the second. I did however enjoy the two main characters in this book. The idea of the alien race taking over human bodies was great, and a whole new way to do paranormal. I would probably read more if it was more like the first book. I feel like there was something missing or a book in between the first and second that needed to have been written....

I saw this book in the library, read the excerpt and figured what the hell... I'm glad I did it was and interesting read and also the fact that shifters were portrayed as aliens is one I haven't encountered before so I really enjoyed the fact that it was something different I was reading. Also the action and the chemistry between the characters was good.

I wasn't engaged by the characters and I found the world-building wasn't adequately explained. This was a DNF for me.
