Some of my favorite songs/bands coupled with posters/drawings that represent specific songs. Sometimes you can guess the song title by looking at the poster before looking at the title panel (Sufjan Stevens' excellent coming-of-age anthem "Chicago") and other times it was not immediately ascertainable but made 100% sense in hindsight (Stars' "My Ex-Lover is Dead", which is one of the most haunting ballads of the 2000s).
The most famous Bloc Party (my all-time favorite band) sweeper is represented, as is works by Bright Eyes, Davendra Banhart, long-defunct Neutral Milk Hotel, The National, The Dears and the super-couple Belle & Sebastian (definitely worth following on social media).
I was starting to wonder where Iron & Wine and Wolf Parade were, but they were included near the end. Was only sad to see Arcade Fire and New Pornographers. Was also surprised to not find an Interpol selection as their ethereal songs are perfect for this sort of project.
I was underwhelmed by this book. It was fun listening to the songs while looking at the posters, but I do not think many of the posters really evoked the same feelings as the songs. I think more variety from the artists would have also helped. Most of the posters were in very similar styles. I don't know very much about the Yellow Bird Project, which might have affected my opinion.
This was a fun fundraising activity created up by the Yellow Bird Project which combines two types of art. Chosen poster artist were given the task of creating a poster that could be used on t-shirts as they imagine it for a selected song of an independent artist. They added a little bit about how they were inspired by the song they chose to create the image they put on their poster. This in not the first creative venture the YBP has used in fundraising. They also made a coloring book. Quick to read.
This is one of those things where I feel less like I "read" something and more like I "looked at" it. I was surprised to find out that most of these posters weren't made for concerts and instead illustrate the artist's ideas about a given song. I enjoyed most of the commentary and found a few artists whose work I want to see more of.
I must be old. I don't recognize any of these songs or bands, but whatever, the posters are fun to look at and this series of books is for The Yellow Bird Project charities.
