When she plays on the seesaw with Charlie and his friend Marv, Lola is launched high into the sky where her imagination takes her on a high-seas adventure--all by herself!
A well known series shown on television and well favoured book by young children. An ideal book to be read out load to early keystage 1 children and could also be used as independent reading for older ages. This book could be appreciated up to the age of 8.
Charlie and Lola are two characters which will be admired by young children especially Lola, who seems to be at the age of 5. Her witty character and 'know it all behaviour' is bound to bring laughs. Lola is adamant to prove that she is capable of doing everything on her own, the kind of attitude children can possible relate to! Charlie begins to show her that being on your own is not as fun so eventually Lola allows Charlie to play with her.
A great book to be used in literacy as a read along and it could also incorporate some drama role-play due to the funny quotes in the book. These could be experimented with different tones and expressions allowing the children to be creative and also trying out different body movement whilst speaking. The exciting images will maintain the child's attention and allow them to speak about the images while reading and/or if they are struggling the images may be used as extensions. Another subject which this book can be used for is art as the child can extend this book and makeup other adventures of Lola and Charlie and presenting them as paintings, drawings or displays. This could also link into literacy.
A good way to encourage children to read is by introducing a book which is already familiar to them. A great book for the classroom and a pleasure to read.
We have read many of the books in the Charlie and Lola, originally created by Lauren Child. The stories are fun and our girls love the characters from watching them on television. I insist on reading them with a (terrible) English accent and our girls humor me by not complaining too much.
The illustrations are as terrific as we've come to expect with these books, and although this story is not actually written by Ms. Child, but instead based on one of the television episodes, it still retains most of the charm of the original books.
Overall, it isn't our favorite of the series, but it's an entertaining story and we enjoyed reading it together.
We love, love, love Charlie and Lola books! They are just so fun to read!
I am not really sure how old Lola is but I am pretty sure she is right around my daughter's age, maybe a bit younger or teeny bit older then five. Lola is a very fun, bright character.
The pictures are simple drawings but I like the character that shows in them.
As far as siblings go...Charlie is the best. A more patient and loving brother cannot be found I'm sure! Even the friends of Charlie and Lola are just so pleasant. So maybe thats a bit unrealistic, but we like it!
Oh my, I love these books! Lola is so darling and spunky and reminds me of my little girl. I think she relates to the obstinate and spunky Lola, whereas Charlie is such a great example of a giving and loving older sibling. These books all have a simple, yet great message, but the solution to the problems are creative and fun which keeps the message from feeling trite or preachy. Fresh and bright illustrations combine with a lot of silliness for a truly wonderful book
I love these kids in a full-size book by Child, or in these mini books from the tv series. This isn't my favorite story... but I do know that there are some children who go through a phase in which they refuse to ask for help, so it'll be relevant to some families. I wonder if Charlie may have been better off if he hadn't hovered so much, though. Just let her figure out herself that sometimes it's good to ask for help or recruit a friend.
Miss 2 loves reading the Charlie & Lola books. I think the title says it all when it comes to two and three year olds! It's such a fun and imaginative way of looking at that obstinate period of emerging independence!
This story might not be quite as much fun as the television version, but it is definitely worth the read. Charlie, Lola and Marv are just about at their most charming in this tale about Lola wanting to prove that she can do anything on her own, even without Charlie's help. I would give this book one and a half stars.
I wish this one had more images from the imaginative play part of the tv episode, where Lola is inspecting the jiving ants and then bravely combats the pirates as Captain Lola, but otherwise it's pretty cute.
In this Charlie and Lola story Charlie is trying to help Lola with lots of things that older siblings typically help younger siblings with but Lola is having none of it. She is asserting her independence. Charlie finally convinces her that there are somethings that you don't have to do alone.
Great book! Charlie and Lola are so fun. Lola is so silly and fun to read about. Charlie is a great older brother that is always patient and caring with Lola. My 9 year old and 6 year old both love this book.
Our two library story time performers took parts while sharing this book -- one was Charlie and the other Lola. This is mostly about a little one declaring independence and an older child persuading that some things are best done together.
