James Edward Marshall (October 10, 1942 – October 13, 1992), who also wrote as Edward Marshall, was a children's author and illustrator.

His father worked on the railroad, was a band member in the 1930s, and his mother sang in the local church choir. His family later moved to Beaumont, Texas. Marshall said: "Beaumont is deep south and swampy and I hated it. I knew I would die if I stayed there so I diligently studied the viola, and eventually won a scholarship to the New England Conservatory in Boston."[1] He entered the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, but injured his hand, ending his music career. He returned to Texas, where he attended San Antonio College, and later transferred to Southern Connecticut State University where he received degrees in French and history.

It is said that he discovered his vocation on a 1971 summer afternoon, lying on a hammock drawing. His mother was watching Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and the main characters, George and Martha, ultimately became characters in one of his children's books. Marshall continued as a children's author until his untimely death in 1992 of a brain tumor. In 1998, George and Martha became the basis of an eponymous animated children's television show.

In addition to George and Martha, the lovable hippopotami, James Marshall created dozens of other uniquely appealing characters. He is well-known for his Fox series (which he wrote as "Edward Marshall"), as well as the Miss Nelson books, the Stupids, the Cut-ups, and many more. James Marshall had the uncanny ability to elicit wild delight from readers with relatively little text and simple drawings. With only two minute dots for eyes, his illustrated characters are able to express a wide range of emotion, and produce howls of laughter from both children and adults.

Fox has an adventure every day of the week, though he makes some questionable decisions too.

Monday--Though Fox is excited for the field trip his class is planning to take he fakes sick to stay home from school when he wakes up to a sky full of rain.

Tuesday--Disappointed with their tuna fish sandwiches, Fox and his friends toss them over a fence (much to a cat's delight).

Wednesday--Fox and his friends get kicked out of the public library for reading a book that made them laugh uncontrollably.

Thursday--The trio of friends finds a box of cigars and smoke them until they make themselves sick.

Friday--Fox makes dinner. His specialty? Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Saturday--Fox gives a box of chocolates to a pretty girl instead of to Granny like he was instructed.

Sunday--Fox's friend Raisin is scared to show everyone that she had braces put on her teeth.

I struggled with this volume of Fox stories. He made some very questionable decisions and I feel that these decisions would still have been regarded as questionable even when this book was first published. I found myself relating to the episode in the library as I often have to send giggling kids home for disturbing the peace. Given the smoking scene, I can't say that I'd recommend this title.

Fox is naughty which appeals to boys and funny so it appeals to girls. Great read for first grade reading groups

It's Monday and raining! Fox assumes that the class field trip will be cancelled. So Fox fakes a sore throat and is permitted to stay home. But...A little rain doesn't stop the field trip! On Tuesday, Fox, Dexter and Carmen find that their mothers have packed them tuna fish sandwiches; they promptly throw them out! Later in the school day, hunger pangs set in. Every day proves that the decisions Fox makes aren't the wisest decisions! Lots of humor in Fox All Week!

Well, there are some things in this book moms might not approve of: Fox lies and says he has a sore throat in order to stay home from school (only to discover the class is going on a field trip.) Fox and his friends smoke cigars. They all give it up, except one friend who says it makes him look smart.

The style reminds me of Dav Pilkey's "Dragon" books.

The entire Lechner family got a real kick out of the Thursday story, wherein Fox and his pals smoke cigars. Whoa. They don't write em like they used to.

I was very disappointed with the chapter where the animals find a box of cigars and smoke them. Bad idea in a children's early reader. Bad taste.

Fox All Week (Fox and His Friends #5) by Edward Marshall, illustrations by James Marshall (Puffin Easy to Read 1995) (J-Fiction) (3691).

I have no idea why, but author Edward Marshall and illustrator James Marshall are actually the same guy: James Edward Marshall. I’m sure that he had a reason for listing the creator’s names thusly, but I was unable to find out why he chose to do so.

This is a children’s book which is written to appeal to the youngest readers. I grabbed this from the public library simply because author James Edward Marshall wrote and illustrated one of the funniest books I ever read: George and Martha (Houghton Mifflin 1972), which consists of several uncomplicated stories about two hippopotami who are best friends. The stories each feature simple line drawings with straightforward plots and very spare text. It sounds simple, but James Edward Marshall makes it work. Though it seems hard to believe, Marshall has a knack for making a five page story with perhaps twenty words of dialogue absolutely laugh-out-loud funny!

If you have yet to discover the delights of this author, this is not a bad one to start with.

My rating: 7/10, finished 10/19/22 (3691).

Fox pretends to be sick on a rainy Monday because he thinks his class field trip will be cancelled.

On Tuesday, the kids all throw their tuna fish sandwiches over the wall at lunch.

On Wednesday evening, Fox gets kicked out of the library.

On Thursday, Fox and his friends smoke cigars and get very sick 🤣

On Friday, Fox cooks dinner for his family.

On Saturday, Fox gives his Granny's chocolates away to a cute girl fox.

On Sunday, Fox and his friends comfort another friend who got braces.

The cigar scene is a classic. 🤣

Mixed emotions on this one. Loved a lot of these stories (the library one), but at one point Fox and his friends smoke cigars and it’s a little inappropriate for the intended audience of the book

Seven stories... which means they aren't long enough for unambiguous endings. For example, I see that several parents are concerned about the smoking chapter... but come on, don't underestimate your darling, s/he can definitely see that Dexter does *not* "look smart" when he continues to smoke.

Imo, the reason I'm not giving this entry in the series the four stars that I'm giving the rest is because the stories were too short for any development at all. I mean, ok, that's how weeks in the life of a happy child go sometimes, but still I felt unsatisfied.

I am so mad after reading half of this book with my daughter who is in First grade. She comes home with Advanced Reader books that she can read and then test on. In the middle of the book we find a story titled "Thursday After School". They come across Cigars and decide to smoke them. The con? Two of them get sick for one hour and they finish off the story with one of the boys still smoking because he thinks it makes him look smart. Seriously? It left us both mad.

This book did not appeal to me very much. There was not much of a story line, it was basically just what the fox did everyday for a week. What I did not like was that the fox did not make very good choices; he lied to his mother and he smoked cigars and there were never any repercussions. I do not think that I would recommend this book to any of my students.

Ha, I forgot about the part where they smoke cigars and get sick. So weird to see smoking in a picture book.
