Iskander de dromendief
Met zijn trouwe helper aan zijn zijde zwierf de bloedjonge, wat onbesuisde en hevig romantische magiër, Iskander, genaamd de dromendief, door de uitgestrekte landen van zijn kleurige wereld en maakte zich her en der verdienstelijk met eenvoudig toverwerk. Veel goud leverde het hem niet op, maar zo'n erg goede magiër was hij nu ook weer niet.
Toen gaf de schone Vrouwe Merle, hogepriesteres en soldaat van het mysterieuze eiland Vale, hem het karwei van zijn leven - bleek later. Wat een ongecompliceerde dromendiefstal had moeten worden, ontaardde tot ieders verbijstering in een levensgevaarlijk avontuur met droomwezens die ook in de wakende wereld Iskander nog naar het leven staan, en zo hoort het helemaal niet!
Het avontuur is zo vreemd en duister dat niemand nog kan bevroeden wie nu de eigenlijke tegenstander is. Hij moet zich ergens op het verre Westelijke continent bevinden, en een angstaanjagend begaafd tovenaar zijn; hele legioenen die plotseling opduiken uit die onbekende helft van de wereld onderwerpen zich aan zijn wil en storten zich extatisch in de dood, zelfs als ze niet bijgestaan worden door bovennatuurlijke krachten. Meer is over hem niet bekend. Zijn naam schijnt te zijn: de Wolf...

Wim Gijsen
36 books10 followersWim Gijsen was (naast zijn werk als dichter, hoorspelauteur en schrijver van literair werk) een van de eerste Nederlandse schrijvers van moderne sciencefiction en fantasy die doorbrak bij het grote publiek. Hij schreef al jaren literair proza, gedichten, kinderboeken en diverse werken over de dood, het hiernamaals, meditatie, vegetarisme en yoga, voordat hij in 1980 het sciencefiction boek De eersten van Rissan schreef. Een jaar later volgde het aansluitende slotdeel De koningen van weleer. Daarna schreef hij tot zijn dood nog een tiental fantasyboeken, waarvan de trilogieën Deirdre en Merisse het bekendst zijn. Hij volgde cursussen keramiek en psychotherapie, was actief bij de Pacifistisch Socialistische Partij en deed naast het schrijven aan beeldhouwen. Ook vertaalde hij meerdere boeken (o.a. enkele van Julian May).
Zijn laatste boek 'De ceders van Urtan' was niet af toen hij stierf, collegaschrijver Peter Schaap heeft dit deel voltooid.

Oh my God, I totally had a flashback stumbling over this book here on goodreads!! 'Iskander The Dream Thief' was the first novel I've read as a child! I remember I asked my mom to buy it because the German paperback had a wolf on its cover. I loved wolves, lol.
I will always treasure this story and its amazing characters, but I should mention it's not a book for kids. Luckily I didn't understand many of the things going on here as a child...like that sacred temple where priestesses offered themselves to pilgrims for sex, as a 'celebration of the holy act'. LOL, definitely not for kids.
What I like best about the late Dutch author Wim Gijsen and all of his books is the fact that he sets them in a medieval world on a remote planet.
In the back story that is only hinted at during the actual plot, we learn that mankind arrived from Earth in spaceships, but the technology was lost ever since and people are now living in a world filled with superstition and magic.
Mankind has subdivided into tribes, some of them being quite technology savy, some being totally ignorant to all things from the past, thinking of their origin from the stars as a mere legend or semi-religious lore. And usually (as seen in this book) there's an indigenous alien species on the planet that was here long before mankind arrived and is now taking an interest in the humans' affairs, stepping out of the shadows after centuries when humans thought of them as fairy tale like creatures to scare children at night.
I consider Wim Gijsen's novels to be among the very best in fantasy/sci-fi, although they're probably not well known in the English speaking parts of the world.
About the plot:
Iskander is a trained magician who isn't very talented in the arts of magic, but he does have one considerable skill that pays his bills:
He is able to invade other people's dreams and can influence them (i.e. turn nightmares into more pleasant dreams).
The High Priestess of Vale knows about his talent and consults him about the terrible nightmares of the young crown prince of the Island Kingdom of Albe.
Iskander soon realizes that the prince doesn't suffer from nightmares but is actually under the influence of a powerful force that hails from the far away "Continent of Taurus".
The 'Wolf', an evil and magically gifted warlord in the distant western continent is trying to invade Albe and is preparing his attack by weakening the regent family.
When the Wolf's fleet strikes an attack on the Holy Isle of Vale, the spiritual center of the known world, Iskander is forced to find his true strength and fight the most powerful enemy any magician ever had to face.
This book and its sequels are among the very best in fantasy. I hope there is an English translation somewhere, so nobody needs to miss this gem from the early 1980s.

Wim Gijsen is duidelijk door Jack Vance beinvloed. De hoofdfiguren, de tovenaar Iskander & zijn bediende Okke, doen vooral in het begin van het boek erg denken aan de sarcastische en egoistische karakkters uit Vance's Dying Earth boeken. Net als Vance gebruikt Gijsen vaak voetnoten. Waar die bij Vance vooral sfeer-verhogend werken, zijn die van Gijsen vooral flinke infodumps.
Gaandeweg lijkt Gijsen meer zijn eigen stem te vinden, hoewel die mij eigenlijk minder bevalt dan de Vance-pastiche.
Als blijkt dat deze fantasy, inclusief magiers, in de toekomst speelt, op een door mensen gekoloniseerde wereld, breekt dat bij mij toch de 'suspension of disbelief'. Zeker als dan even later een draak Jiddisch blijkt te spreken.
De taal van Gijsen is ook niet altijd even soepel, ik geloof ook niet dat quasi-ouderwetse woorden als 'doch', 'welks', 'eender' in 1982 nog in de spreektaal gebruikt werden."
Na een wat picaresk begin, volgt het verhaal al snel een duidelijk plot, hoewel tegen het eind alles de hoofdrolspelers wel makkelijk afgaat, tot duidelijk wordt dat het verhaal nog niet af is.
Ik heb vroeger de boeken van Wim Gijsen allemaal uit de bibliotheek geleend en verslonden. In mijn herinnering was het helaas wat beter. Al met al geen meesterwerk, maar de humor van de hoofdrolspelers maakt een hoop goed. Ik ben wel benieuwd hoe het 2e deel zich tot dit boek verhoudt.

This is one of those novels that should have been translated in English . Wim Gijsen was the 'godfather'of Dutch high fantasy in the 80thies ( His work has been translated in German ). This is such an original story. It has wry humor and great worldbuilding . The self doubting yet cocky young wizard and his servant ,the world-weary veteran soldier have to navigate in a world ruled by strong women and filled with political intrigue.
Na 40 jaar vond ik deze paperback ergens achterin de kast, en ben hem weer gaan lezen. Nog steeds een aanrader voor fans van Nederlandse fantasy.
Iskander is een jonge, middelmatige tovenaar die met een oude wereldwijze soldaat rondreist . Hij is een niet al te ethisch aangelegde losbol. Hij is ook niet bijzonder vaardig ,maar hij heeft een bijzondere specialisatie : Het betreden en manipuleren van dromen . Als h een geheime missie aanneemt escaleert de boel, en raakt hij ongewild betrokken bij conflicten van staatsbelang . Het is een spannend verhaal, maar verzand een beetje tegen het einde. Naarmate het boek vordert maken de new age invloeden het net iets te zoetsappig naar mijn smaal . Het eindigt met een spannende cliff-hanger.
Na 40 jaar vond ik deze paperback ergens achterin de kast, en ben hem weer gaan lezen. Nog steeds een aanrader voor fans van Nederlandse fantasy.

Na een paar hoofdstukken gelezen te hebben, heb ik dit boek maar opgegeven. Misschien iets om later in de Kerst-vakantie te lezen. Kwam er niet door heen.
