A great book to celebrate the month of April! Robert starts the first day of April spotting a lone rabbit, and as the month progresses, he spies one more each day in more and more curious situations, culminating in the last day of April when he doesn't see a single one (but a hippopotamus does follow him home! Oh no!) We enjoyed this one very much!
On April 1st, while Robert heads off to school, he spies a rabbit. On April 2nd, he sees two rabbits. As the days fly by, the number of rabbits increases. Some are in plain sight, others require a little searching to find. Kids will have fun counting all 28 bunnies gathered round a campfire as their dinner, a giant head of lettuce, roasts on a spit.
The wonderful pen and ink wash illustrations are by New Yorker cartoonist, Nurit Karlin.
Sadly, this title has gone out of print, though used copies seem readily available.
The ending is a real treat and I don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone planning on reading the book. Let's just say that Robert should have a very exciting month of May.
(For those of you NOT planning on buying or reading this book - )
I am apparently the only person on the internet to love this book, and I am willing to take on that burden for everyone else. April Rabbits probably contributed to my love of list-making and my latent regard for springtime. And bunnies.
Robert has a very interesting April, as every day he notices more and more rabbits doing some rather imaginative things.
A humorous counting book. I love how Robert's mother takes him to the eye doctor because he's seeing so many rabbits. The illustrations are all black and white, but still fun and makes it a little more like a hide and seek to count all the rabbits on each page.
This very humorous, imaginative story with a hilarious ending is one of my family's favorites. It was one of the first of its kind in a style that was copied ever after.
The April Rabbits is about a boy who on the first day of April notice one day doing something silly, and as each day of April goes by more bunnies arrive doing something silly. By April 30th there are 30 rabbits doing something strange. The book is a great way for young children to learn numbers and about the days of the month.
Ways to be used in the classroom: 1) Can be used to teach struggling or beginning students how to count 2) Play counting games with the bunnies 3) Have different books about different months to teach students the months of the year 4) Help explain animal behavior. Such as asking if a rabbit would really be watching tv on the tenth of April 5) Can help teach different seasons of the year
