Winner of the Prix Femina and considered a masterpiece of autobiography, this is J. B. Pontalis' lyrical meditation on his own life. One of France's preeminent psychoanalysts, he is co-author of the classic The Language of Psychoanalysis and he has also been a member of the editorial committee of Les Temps Modernes.
exceptionally beautiful autobiography by a prominent lacanian psychoanalyst. the book is often concerned with psychoanalysis and with philosophy (pontalis studied under sartre) but in the end it is predominantly a work of literature--and a rather great one, even.
I think it is the best book that J.B. Pontalis has ever written! He shows very well how things begin slowly but wonderfully. Hence the title! It's a complex patchwork of childhood and youth memories but also a tale about ordinary life in Paris.
