About the author

Ai Yazawa (Japanese: 矢沢あい, Yazawa Ai) is a Japanese manga author and illustrator. Her pen name comes from singer Eikichi Yazawa, of whom she is a fan.
Yazawa started her comics career in 1985. She specialises in shojo manga (girls' comics). Most of her works have been serialised in the magazines 'Ribon', 'Cookie' and 'Zipper'.
Yazawa's stories focus on young, often rebellious women and their relationships. The characters are always very stylish, and Yazawa herself is known for her sense of fashion. (She even attended a fashion school for some time after high school.)
Among her most famous manga are Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai (I'm No Angel, 1992–1995), Neighborhood Story (1995-1998), Paradise Kiss (1999-2004), and Nana (2000-2009), the latter awarded a Shogakukan Manga Award in 2003. Some of these works have been adapted into anime and live action movies.

i'll never understand why people always went on and on about nana when this beauty was right there too!!!!!

12/03/22... i've reread this so many times and every time i forget what happens with mariko and yuusuke... i think it's a case of selective memory because it just hurts too much

literally obsessed with the characters, the CLOTHES are immaculate you can really see how carefully ai yazawa has crafted all the different characters’ aesthetics. truly my favourite thing about this is just the styling, each character’s style is so unique and cool and girl !! i love !! i even think i like this more than nana which is saying a LOT

Sweet, but a little overdramatic. Quite funny and the art style is definitely enjoyable. Also a *little* ridiculous that they're all supposed to be sixteen years old.

¿Cuál es tu historia favorita de Ai Yazawa?

Yo conocí a esta mangaka con «Paradise Kiss» y después con «Nana» con esas dos historia hicieron que se convirtiera en una de mis favoritas en el mundo del Shojo 💖 pero Gokinjo Monogatari es mucho antes de esas dos historias, es más Paradise Kiss es un Spin-off de Gokinjo 😉 pero justamente van a entender mucho mejor el mundo de Paradise si leen antes esta historia, porque algunos de los personajes como justamente los protagonistas «Mikako y Tsutomu» tienen un rol importante, ni hablar el colegio de Arte Yazawa (Si, tiene el nombre de la autora 😅).

Gokinjo Monogatari sigue la vida justamente de Mikako y Tsutomu, dos amigos y vecinos de la infancia que llegando a la adolescencia empiezan a sentir algo muy distinto que solo una amistad (los invito a descubrir cuál de ellos dos es el que empieza a sentir el bichito del amor 😱). Este primer tomo esta muy relacionado a los capítulos del anime así que les puedo decir que si ven el anime antes que leer el manga van a encontrar muchas cosas parecidas ya que el anime no cambio nada en absoluto.

Es un manga que no van a poder soltar porque se van a encariñar con todos los personajes y creo que más con las locuras de Mikako, ella es muy divina y divertida (aparte de ingenua) pero me gusta bastante su mal humor 🙈 que más decirles que invitarlos a adentrarse en el mundo de Gokinjo Monogatari y además lo lindo que tiene el manga es que trae algunos datitos extras que si vieron el anime les va a caer de fábula 😉

Ai yazawa nunca decepciona con sus historias, como siempre es maravilloso su estilo de dibujo, personajes y tramas que se van desarrollando. Estoy emocionada por continuar leyendo sobre los dramas que mikako atravesará en su vida, como será su desarrollo individualmente y en conjunto de tsutomu, risa, yuusuke y mariko.

Pase un buen momento leyendo este manga, entre tantos mis momentos favoritos son el cameo de la autora, la adopción del gatito y mikako comprando una moto. Hablando de ella, no puedo creer que no se de cuenta de los sentimientos que siente tsutomu, además tengo curiosidad de como tratarán ese detalle de ella haciendo de todo por llamar la atención, que fue una preocupación de su madre.

This was a lot harder to read than I thought it would be and most certainly the hardest manga I've attempted to read in Japanese, so I only think I followed about 70% of what was going on.
From what I coudld tell, it was a great story, and I would like to read more when my Japanese understanding improves.
It reminded me a lot of NANA, which makes sense as the author is the same. I'm going to read this again in a few months and hopefully have a better grasp on it, however, I should probably stick to manga that's less text heavy for now.

No sé si es porque soy muy mayor para esto, o porque el manga es muy viejo, pero vaya cagadon, ella, la prota es INSOPORTABLE!, tan pick me que duele, una historia que ha envejecido muy mal, principalmente lo que me molesta es ella, cuando los protas son asi, es un NO rotundo para mi, si, Ai yazawa no es muy feminista ni nada en sus historias, pero al menos en nana lo lleva bien, acá no.
En fin no me ha gustado nada, tal vez a una adolescente si, pero aun así tiene mensajes muy malos la verdad, yo no lo recomiendo, me dejé llevar porque es A.Y. pero fue un verdadero parto leer esto.

Le plaisir de relire des mangas et particulièrement de retrouver le coup de main de Ai Yazawa, en tant que fan absolue de Nana, je suis ravie d'enfin pouvoir découvrir Gokinjo que je n'avais pas eu l'occasion de trouver encore mais c'est chose faite grâce à la nouvelle médiathèque de mon village woooot !

Je vous conseille aussi Paradise kiss qui est une "suite" si on veut de ce manga :)

Had to fill my Nana void somehow way back when, so I found the prequel to ParaKiss on the internet.

I really loved the first volume of this manga. It was such a lucky find, because it is out of print in Germany since 2005. I found it secondhand for only 4€!! I really like Ai Yazawa’s work and I might like this series more than I like Nana (even though I really love Nana). It is such a cool take on shojo manga.

Came here after Nana and Paradise Kiss, and I loved it. I really like the childish and funky art style, which contrasts with her more recent works.

It's funny, cute, and melancholic sometimes with fashion and music references.

However, translation is a bit odd sometimes, especially when it comes to side texts (outside the bubbles).

Ai Yazawa jest jedną z moich ulubionych mangaczek, więc gdy tylko zobaczyłam dostępny tom w księgarni bez zastanowienia kupiłam go. Sama lektura była bardzo przyjemna, jak na autorkę przystało, wykreowane przez nią postaci były bardzo urozmaicone, barwne. Fabuła była na tyle ciekawa, że nim się obejrzałam już ją kończyłam.
Zdecydowanie polecam!

In realtà non ho potuto finirlo perché sull’app dove leggo i manga non c’era davvero l’edizione digitale, ma il libro scannerizzato, e un sacco di parole non riuscivo a leggerle nemmeno zoomando al massimo.
