I can't believe this is the last chapter of one of my favourite series. I'm just glad that the mangaka made an amazing second series. In the last Volume, many loose threads are tied up all neat in a bow for us. Our detectives have grown so much from the first volume and we get a great case to end on. Finally, we learn about Leo and how he's wrapped up in all that's happened to our two men. He is part of a very tangled Web and has climbed up the ladder since Ryo's parent's death. Diane is once again in this one and working on a witness protection case involving Leo's wife. She is one crafty and conniving woman, she knows what she wants and doesn't care who is hurt in the process. When it's all over someone will be dead and the past will finally be put to bed! We finally have great progress in Dee and Ryo's relationship. Ryo finally comes to terms with his feeling for Dee and who he is as a person. Their first time together is short but sweet. It was so worth all the waiting for it to finally happen. When Ryo finally said them three little words it made my heart so happy! Then they had a sweet date and redo of their first time in bed together. This one was so much hotter. I have read this series many many times and I never get tired of this series. I got so happy when the second series was translated to English and it is so worth reading. The art style has changed and I love it! Just can't get enough of these two and the cases that come their way.

Ok, so each book (mostly) feels like the author fixes the issues with the previous ones.

I'm kinda sad for how Leo's story ended, but it was really nice that Ryo finally got called out on his BS. It really felt "too little, too late" and it was literally the final scene when Ryo FINALLY admits what he really feels.

Interestingly, books 6 and 7 highlight this as less about Dee and more about Ryo being massively closeted, but in so many ways, that didn't feel right with the earlier books. The books cover at least 1-2 years (timeline slightly unclear, and Bikky and Carol's timeline covers 6-8 years), and you'd think Ryo made some progress with accepting his homosexuality, especially considering how comfortable he got with make-out sessions. He only seemed to get freaked out at going further (so, scared or commitmentphobic), but to then explain that he actually was fine with Dee but couldn't accept he was gay...

I give up. Dee deserved better.

That being said, the ending did work and everyone got their happily ever after and Bikky's stories also let us know it does work out long term, so... yay. I guess. I still think Ryo should have gotten his shit together years ago. Dragging it out was cruel and made me dislike him, even if it did resolve in the end.

This review is going to be talking about the whole series.

I loved this manga so much and it has now become one of my new favorite manga of all time.
I loved the main relationship between the two main characters, it loved how much they cared for each. I didn't mind the side charters however they all were a bit 2D and didn't really have that much development. Except for Bikky and Carol who have a few chapters focused on their relationship. I did quite like these chapters and I really like Carol but I wasn't the biggest fan of Bikky. The plot was overall pretty good but could have been a little bit better.

Overall even though it does have its flaws like any other manga, I still loved it and would recommend that you read it.

And we finally get to an actual relationship between Dee and Ryo. I have to agree with most people that this is by far my favourite volume, since we get a nice conclusion to their relationship, things get tied up and Leo’s case is also closed. There’s a lot of things wrapping up nicely, but one of the things I loved most about ‘Fake’ is that it doesn’t only concentrates on Ryo and Dee’s relationship, there’s tons of police work happening, crimes that need to be solved, and we also get quite a lot of story from all the other characters surrounding them, so it feels very complete. I also happen to like that it’s a short series, because my attention span starts getting lost at around book 10 for mangas, and this is just 7, so it’s absolutely perfect.

quick series review:
so, so good!
I had not read fake in years and oh, I am so glad I did so on a whim! the series is just so refreshingly free of many of the genre's most troubling and terrible stereotypes, it's a truly a breath of fresh air! and then there are the very lovable, well-rounded main and side characters... fake is just really, really good.
some of the smaller cases feel a bit rushed and I wish some arcs/cases had more time to them, but overall the crime story aspect of fake is solid.
content note:the manga can be quite graphic when it comes to the depictions of homicides, that's something to be aware of and maybe look into depending how sensitive you are to such things.

I liked this series more than I thought i would. Since starting it I have been told it was parodying cop shows at the time and under that context its rather entertaining. That being said this has not aged very well. It is riddled with slurs, people randomly have 1 ft jawlines, and alot of the explanations and motives are just kinda like "....sure? I guess?" But it made me genuinely laugh multiple times and I have to say I've never read anything like it before. If you can ignore the dated language its a surprisingly good time for the most part~

To be honest, I love this volume more because of Alicia and Leo than I do because Dee and Ryo finally work their shit out. There is just something so compelling about Alicia and her motives, and the way she orchestrates the entire thing is absolutely amazing. She's cold and calculating, and I love her.

This really enjoyed this book and I found this book to be funny in some parts. I'm like how characters and their relationships are developed through the series. I still would have like the side characters to be flash out bit more.

Both the ending and the atmosphere was that fine also I didn't really like the cover or art style.

I want more!!! I especially liked the smooth fast dialogue. I always understood what was happening compared to other manga where I feel that a page is missing. Great art and interesting stories. I saw that there is a FAKE 2 on amazon. I am not ready to let Dee and Ryo go yet.

Would have like to have seen more focus on Dee and Ryo in this last volume. Felt a little flat. Over all I feel the story is a 3.5 some volumes were better than others but I liked the relationship between Ryo and Dee very much.

I feel like it was really repetitive. Like each volume they get a case, solve it unusually quickly and get cblocked by bikky. Also they dont even seem like the best detectives either. BUT IT IS SOOO FUN 🫶🫶🫶

I can see why Fake is considered one of the better yaoi series out there. Not only is the whole "buddy cop" trope engaging and fun to read, the action is great, the grittiness of crime life in 90's New York City is brutally depicted, and the characters are memorable and well-written. This is the most "Americanized" manga/anime I've come across besides Cowboy Bebop, only with more... liberties on how Americans treated the LGBTQA community...

But hey, that's self-indulgence to a T. After finding a good link of read this beloved series, I devoured Fake over the past few days, after originally reading the first volume four years ago from a public library. I'm glad I gave this series another chance, because now it's one of my favorites!

Dee and Ryo are now my second favorite gay couple in anime (but only because no one can top "Victurri" from Yuri on Ice, which is hardly a fair comparison...). Dee is obnoxious, hilarious, and excellent at keeping his head straight on the field as a cop. Plus, he's openly and unabashedly bisexual, which is refreshing in a world that STILL refuses to acknowledge that bisexuality is valid. Ryo, on the other hand, is shy, unassuming, diligent, and never puts up with Dee's shit. Both characters are joy reading/watching, both together and separate. They're practically a married couple long before they start "fooling around," as it were.

That said, further suggestive material ahead and "spoilers":

Other than this final volume, there's nothing sexually graphic in this series (unless you count a brief "flashback" panel featuring, um, prostitution), but there's most certainly a lot of heated up kissing scenes and casual, implied "attempts" at sex (that's mostly played up for laughs, and they get interrupted every time, anyway). In fact, most of the "graphic" aspects of the series is the violence: Fake does not hold back on the brutality of gun violence, serial killers, and drug lords. Each volume features a different case Dee and Ryo work on to solve, and over time, we find out why they're both so passionate and good at their jobs, and that has solely to do with their personal motives for becoming cops in the first place.

Fake is action-packed, fun, hilarious, intense, dark, sexy, and an overall fantastic manga, with engaging storylines, memorable characters, and beautiful art to boot!

The majority of this manga is taken up with the story focusing on Dee and Ryo having to babysit the wife of Leo, the man who killed Ryo's parents. Ryo has to deal with how he feels about Leo but also Dee. In the end, he learns the truth about what happened when his parents were killed and he and Dee take their relationship to the next level... finally! Poor Dee, he really does have the patience of a saint, but I do think the UST is played out to perfection.

I love the last story, as despite what happened between him and Ryo in the last one, three weeks later, Dee still isn't sure where they stand. Which is far more realistic than the usual happy ending, but of course, they soon work it out ;-)!

The end... or is it?

The story actually continues in a short story that has never been published in English, which I think is a crying shame, as it would have been the most perfect end to Volume 7 of FAKE in my humble opinion, TokyoPop!

FAKE: Like, Like, Love

***spoilers***

Time has moved on. Bikky (who is very hot as an 18 year old, I'm just saying!) is off to college in LA, but promises to visit Carol often and stay true. Berkeley finally realises the person he wants is Diana with a bit of help from Ryo. J.J and Drake bond (and share a brief kiss!) over their respective broken hearts and Dee extends his apartment and asks Ryo to move in with him, aww! See, perfect ending!

Oh boy, this series.

Let me start of with saying I am not typically a manga fan, and a lot of BL manga hits exactly the wrong buttons for me.

But FAKE is everything I love.

Yes, it's got problems. The plots, while entertaining, are often quite simplified and holey (not to mention you need to forget everything you thought you knew about the USA police), and it's true that the entire series is aimed at BL-loving girls and younger women (but is this a fault?).
But it's a heartwarming story, it has humour without ever falling over the edge into a mindless laugh-rollercoaster, and it's got characters you can't help but get attached to (even when they're dicks).
Personally I also prefer this style of art over the more 'typical' BL-manga style (Sanamo Matoh may have had a problem with drawing hands in earlier volumes, but at least they're sort of proportional to the rest of the bodies, know what I'm saying? :P), but I suppose that's personal preference since I've heard a lot of people say they needed to get used to it.

All in all, I've reread this series probably about five times, I know the plots and sometimes dialogues by heart and it is stíll a good read.

Without a doubt, one of the best written manga out there, with particular interest because I think Ryo's character might be asexual and you certainly don't see a lot of that! Rather than go on and on about how great it was (especially on my reread), I'm going to address the author here...

Sanami Matoh, I see you did some work with a Fake "season two" (gone are the original art I loved! Ahhh!) and did a few, uh, adult side-stories (Thank you!), but I have several points I want to see addressed:

*What was Ryo's life like before working with the NYPD. Where was he reassigned from?
*How did Ryo interact with people before Dee?
*More on Dee's sexuality, when did he realize he was gay, why does he insist Ryo is the only guy he's interested in.

So far, the second season has answered my questions on how would the new couple navigate life together and how would Bikky react to Dee's "conquest"

I'm in too deep, but I think this will help inspire more. So... please? :)

The final volume in this thrilling series hots things up between our two favourite cops. - Dee and Ryo become bodyguards to Alicia Grant a witness needing protection before a major trial. One major hitch - she's the wife of Leo, the guy who murdered Ryo's parents. Ryo has to confront all manner of feelings about his sexuality, his feelings for Dee, his desperate need for revenge warring against his duty. Love this one. Sexy, romantic, with a great story, and nice clean artwork. Bikky and Carol don't get a look in in this one, but then, if you've been following the rest of the series, the bonus story flash forwards conclude their story arc. This volume's all about Ryo and Dee. One of my favourite yaoi series.

The following review is recycled for each book of the series.

I honestly can’t even with these two assholes. I love them so much. You know, it’s fucking hilarious how blind I fucking was to the tags for this manga when I first read it. I literally didn’t even know it was LGBT, because I didn’t look at the tags, and I was all “oh my god, they are literally boyfriends; I can’t”. And I usually avoid rereading certain things because I don’t want to risk ratings getting much lower (because thoughts and feelings, and opinions, change all the time) but I really wanted to reread this one and I’m so glad I did. I still love them. And I love how dumb this is.

The consent issue is probably the only thing that bothers me but it’s not bad enough that I’d lower the rating.
