Half-Fae Laird Duncan MacDougall is cursed. His nights are haunted by Otherworld creatures sent to kill him. The only way to stop them is to possess the magic bow currently in the hands of his enemy half brother, Kinnon MacClaren. In desperation, Duncan plans to take MacClaren's bride-to-be hostage and exchange her for the bow.

Lady Alana Forbes has never met her intended, but she hopes he is handsome—and a good lover, for Alana is no innocent virgin. On her way to Castle Claren, Alana and her escorts are intercepted, and she is kidnapped by a man with extraordinary abilities—and every attribute she longs for in a mate.

Duncan didn't expect the woman he thought of as a mere pawn to be so beautiful, and so arousing. Alana is drawn to him as well—but Duncan still needs the bow, and Alana is betrothed to another. How far will Alana go to save the life of the man she's come to love?

I received this as an ARC from www.netgalley.com

This novella had a rocky start for me. I didn’t like the heroine. That, for me, is always a big deal. I think I can handle a jerk of a hero better than a heroine I dislike. But I changed my mind about halfway through, so I must applaud the author for that turnaround.

Since I did have a change of heart, I’m not going to bother with what bugged me about the beginning, but I will say that I LOVED how the hero may not quite be a hero, and that the villain of the piece isn’t quite a villain.

The hero Duncan MacDougall, Laird of Darkness, sees his half brother’s intended and her entourage on their way to meet his half-brother (through the same fae mother, but with different lairds as fathers), and he abducts Lady Alana. His purpose is to trade the lovely Lady Alana for a magical bow called the Dealanach of which his brother the MacLeren is the keeper. One big giant piece of info you will need is that the demons from the Otherworld try to steal Duncan back every night. The arrows that bow shoots will keep the beasts at bay. His mother never got the chance to gift him one of his own, so his whole life has been about stealing his brother’s bow. (see what I meant about the hero not necessarily being the hero?)

Lady Alana proves too tempting for Duncan, and the two of them have some steamy sex! I think Nicole North has amazing sex scenes, I mean whew, I had to fan myself!
They fall in love, and when MacLeren tried to retrieve his bride, he stole the wrong woman! I cracked up at how Lady Alana handled that! The only thing really bothered me, was I HATED how the ending was so abrupt and unfulfilling. Really incredibly abrupt. But I still enjoyed the steamy sexy novella and will read more from Nicole North.

A quick erotic paranormal read, I’d say anyone in need of a Highlander fix or a druid fix would really enjoy this novella.

[and a quick side note-HEELLLLLOOOOOO JIMMY THOMAS! That is one hot cover! he just happens to be the same hunky Highlander on my cover]

Laird of Darkness is a sinfully erotic tale, taking place in the Scottish highlands that I just couldn’t get enough of!

Duncan is a half fae Scottish laird whose mother died while giving birth to him before she could gift him with protection from the creatures of the Otherworld. So every night that he allows himself to fall asleep they attack him in his nightmares, leaving painful claw and bite marks on him upon waking. Duncan needs a magical bow from his half brother to keep the monsters at bay and when he comes across the beautiful Lady Alana he finally gets the leverage he needs. Holding her hostage he offers a trade, but will he get more in returned then he ever imagined possible?

I was a bit skeptical starting this novella, but I loved every minute of it. It was a fast and incredibly sexy read, with the perfect balance of plot and eroticism.
I was drawn in immediately to the main characters, Duncan and Alana, and riveted by their story. Duncan is a dark, super-sexy laird in a kilt (who doesn’t just drool over that?) and Alana made a sweet and spunky heroine. As expected in a novella, their relationship moved forward at a quick pace but with the authors writing it flowed naturally and was believable. There was suspense, action, sexual tension and gratification. A fabulous read!

4 ½ - Loved it! If it had been longer then it’d be perfect!

The short novella form is just so difficult to get right in the best of circumstances, and it's almost impossible for a steamy- historical-paranormal with a unique world/mythology structure. North has only a few pages to hook us into the story, which is the main problem here because she also needs to 1) introduce Duncan, his curse, his abilities, and the possible cure, 2)have a meet-cute with the heroine, 3) introduce heroine and her unique backstory, 3) set up the conflict, and 4) build a believable magical world. It's just too-tall of an order for 85 pages, and the first 20 pages tried to do too much and just didn't suck me into the story which left me feeling detached for the remainder. Had this been a 300 page novel, North could have allowed the conflict to develop more slowly, built up Duncan's character a lot more, and made Alana's character more fully-fleshed. North has a lot of talent, and I think she can be a great addition to the historical paranormal market, but I wonder if she might not be most successful with a few longer books to set up this world. Also, I love a good Scottish kidnapping story, but Alana went from captive to bedmate way too fast--it may be that this plotline simply needs a longer time frame to be believable, even when heroine is not a virgin and not at all ashamed of that fact. In this compressed format, Alana ended up coming off like a shameless hussy, instead of the complex character she had the potential to be. All the right elements were here, and I think it is entirely possible that other readers would rate this higher. If you read a lot of paranormal and love historical paranormal, particularly with Fae creatures, you will probably feel more at home in this world to begin with, and if you are looking for a fast, sexy, kidnapping story you may be willing to suspend some disbelief. I plan to check out longer releases from North as I think she may have just been too hampered by the length requirements. The best part of North's writing is the little details like Alana's work as a healer, and I'd love see her have room for them to really shine.

This is an erotic novella. Lady Alana is on her way to meet her betrothed, but is kidnapped instead by his half-brother. The two siblings have been feuding all their lives over a magical bow they need to keep night demons at bay.

Duncan, Alana's captor, hopes he can trade Alana for the bow. Kinnon, Alana's intended, has no intention of giving it, or her, up. Stalemate. But neither brother could have predicted Alana would decide to choose her own fate...

Alana isn't no longer chaste. Although she hopes for a kind husband, she also wants a lusty one. She knows that makes her a wanton, but she can't help it. Duncan isn't at all what she expected. He's dark and brooding, but he also takes care to see that she's comfortable. The contradiction surprises her. It also surprises her that she's falling in love with him.

Duncan is determined to trade Alana for the bow...until she starts sharing his bed. Then he isn't sure he can give her up.

This is a short story, but it was very engaging. I enjoyed all the characters, especially the brothers. They each see the other as the villain, but the situation isn't black and white.

My only disappointment is how short the story was, and how the author left it. I hope she has plans to continue it in the future.

Laird of Darkness is a steamy erotic historical short story. I enjoyed the story more after I got past the middle of the book. I also enjoyed all the characters, but I was disappointed at the way it ended and I never really felt like I got into the whole story, too much was missing for me.

The sex is very, very hot and there is a nice connection between Duncan and Alana. The story goes some into Duncan past; I just never got to know much about Alana. Overall the book is a decent read I just wish the author would have gotten deeper with the characters and the story.

It's mostly a blur... Everything runs together, and it's upsetting.... The premise had potential, and I had hoped it would be worth it. It wasn't. I'm not happy or upset by it, so to me, it's not worth it.

Cons:
1. The writing is definitely not something to brag about, and while the story was quickly paced, it went way too allegro. As I mentioned before, it blurs. Time is inconsistent, and the author feels like giving the protagonist (and his nemesis) random super powers.

2. The random super powers... He has super strength, he can fly, and he can turn invisible at will, aside from the birthmark that fades into a glow of pink, which acts like a target. Oh! And the creepy boogey creatures that attack him at night.... The only way he can defend himself at night is with either a special bow or "the light of Alana's soul." So cliche.

3. There are no answers to anything. He's half fae. He has super powers, and creatures are after him in his dreams. No backstory except his mother was kidnaped by his father, and she died in child birth. His half-brother wants him dead because he blames his half-brother for his father's doings. His mom didn't gift him with a protection spell, but a spell to keep the brothers from stepping on each other's land? Dumb...

The list goes on.

Pros:
1. The sex is good.

2. The story becomes decent half-way through, but it's still straining.

Usually, I would give this 1.5-2 stars. If this was a paperback instead of Kindle, I would have been tempted to tear it to shreds.

3 stars, Laird of Darkness by Nicole North an Erotic Novella. Duncan MacDougall is half-fae laird who nights are haunted my otherworld creatures. Lady Alana Forbes is on her way to meet her betrothed when Duncan snatches her away. Sparks immediately fly, to say the least between Alana and Duncan while the past comes back to haunt them both and they begin to depend on each other and reveal their past fears and demons.

What I loved about this book is the passion and desire. Duncan was relentless in his need for Alana and she the same with him. In many novellas sub-characters are left behind to focus on the main characters.

This book left me wanting more... More pages that is with more detail into Duncan and Alana's past indiscretions and pain. This book has potential and i'm interested in seeing this as a series with more world building.

I love historical paranormal romance especially in Scotland with hot men in kilts.

You all know I love my highlander books and this one looked to have it all....Highlanders, Hostage taking, Romance, and Fae magic.....well???
I must admit I like the story as it did start off rather strong with the taking of Lady Alana by Duncan MacDougall. I enjoyed the Strong sex scenes, between Alana and Duncan, that did not disappoint as this is described as an erotic story. I thought it was funny when MacClaren's men took Sophie instead and how Kinnon handled it.
I'm am truly glad how this story worked out and did in fact find it to be a rather nice read.......However....
What I didn't like is how it ended....Really???
Did the brothers ever meet? Did Lady Alana go back and check on Sophie???
I mean we were told about their history, it would have only have been fair to have at least have known how they ended up (on terms of brothers).
An epilogue would have been really nice in this story even if it just a little one.

Review provided by Black Lagoon Reviews:

Laird of Darkness by Nicole North is a Scottish historical erotic romance with light ties to the paranormal. Nicely written, this novella was fast paced with some great action and some wonderfully steamy romance that proved to be an extremely quick read. If you love brooding, misunderstood heroes of the Highland persuasion full of passion then this is definitely a tale for you! However, while this may have been a good read, I felt that there was a lot missing from the story and not as fully developed as it could have been.

The world development was wonderfully pitched with great settings and atmosphere that brought the world of the story to life. The times of drafty castles and battling clans was perfectly descibed serving to pull you into the time period and the lives of the characters. There was also some great paranormal elements that North perfectly wove into her tale creating a nicely superstitious tone ripe with the potential of fantastic magic. You literally never knew what to expect to show up with the underlying mystery surrounding Duncan's half Fae heritage drawing creatures to him from within his dreams. However, while I loved the potential presented in this aspect, I felt that it was truly wasted as nothing really ever comes of it. The dreams and creatures stalking Duncan are never fully explored, nor is the Gaelic magic that Alana conjures to weaves as healing spells.

But, this aspect also adds an nice element to the characterization as it provides some great opportunities for emotional appeal that was used to some advantage, creating a sort of connection that made it easy for these two seemingly opposing characters bond. Alana, as well as being a powerful healer, is also a remarkably resourceful and intelligent woman. But, like Duncan she is forced to hide her fear of the dark, a scar from her past which plagues her, and her amazing abilities from the world. Duncan, being half Fae, has numerous abilities that have all contributed to his frigthening persona as the Laird of Darkness giving him the instant impression of being the barbaric villain of the story. However, things are not always as they appear and we quickly learn that he has merely been trying to survive the horrors of darkness as well as struggling to protect his clan. While he may be a strong and skilled warrior, he is also both noble and vulnerable, creating an interesting inner dynamic that I truly enjoyed seeing explored. As well as these key players though, there is also Duncan's half brother Kinnon, the man to which Alana is supposed to be wed. Now here's where the characterization sort of failed for me, as we never really learn much about Kinnon, only that we know as little of him as he knows of his brother. There was a lot of room for exploration that would make the story more dimensional if we could have gotten at least a little more of a glimpse at him and the misunderstanding between the two brothers.

And then there's the romance of the novel which is without a doubt deliciously steamy. North does a marvelous job at bringing the passion of her characters to the forefront, creating a strong bond that sucks you in. And truly, the erotic aspects of this tale are sinfully delicious and capturing a tenderness that isn't seen in the characters' interactions. But, at the same time I also felt as if the relationship was only two dimensional and not as truly developed as it could have been. I know this is hard to accomplish in under a hundred pages, but I felt as if their connection came about rather too quickly as the chemistry was good, but not what I would call combustible. However, as the story progresses I came to really like these two together, but only wished there would have been more of a connection rather then mostly sex....not that I have anything against that! I just think with more development this would have gone from merely a good to an amazing one.

My other issue with this story lies within the paranormal aspects as my initial impression of this novella definitely had me believing that the paranormal would have as much of a stock in the tale as the romance. How wrong I was! While North creates an enticing world of Fae and magical possibilities she seemed to back away almost instantly leaving so much potential under developed and unexplored. Instead of being a plot point, it became background noise leaving so many questions to linger about Duncan's heritage and abilities as well as the nightmarish world that plagues his dreams. Also unexplored is the history behind Alana's healing abilities. Obviously a witch to some extent, it was left open as to what exactly where her family's ability came from or the extent of her powers. And how does this all end? With lots of lingering, unanswered questions as the ending ties up rather abruptly leaving no hint of answers to come and me sitting there glaring at my Nook like it was the one responsible.

Overall, this novel delivered big on the romance front while leaving me lacking on the supernatural one. But despite this, this novella still proved to be a good, quick read. I would, however, be interested to know if North plans to do a follow up in which she would hopefully give more development to the anemic plot that held so much potential because honestly this is a world I would love to see more of. But, as it stands, this is a decent enough read, but doesn't quite manage to deliver all that was promised.

The Laird of Darkness is a creatively fun, heart-warming, pulse racing, crafted story of a sexy, misunderstood highland hero and one heroine who is more than what she seems.

Lady Alana Forbes is on her way to meet her betrothed when she is surprised by a devilishly handsome stranger; dark, mysterious, and oh-so-naked. After learning who she is and where she's headed, Laird Duncan MacDougall can't pass up the opportunity to use the light-haired beauty to his advantage. He decides to take Alana and her traveling party hostage to use as a bargaining chip.

Half-Fae Duncan, has been seeking a way to gain the magical bow and arrows from his half-brother Laird Kinnon MacClaren, who's also half-Fae. For the magical arrows are the only thing that can save Duncan from a lifetime of perilous dreams of Underworld creatures who's nighttime attacks are more real than fiction. However, there's something much more tempting standing in his path of the perfect revenge and attaining his goal of freedom from the otherworldly creatures.

Lady Alana Forbes is beyond tempting to Duncan, and despite his reputation as the Laird of Darkness, Duncan is more compassionate than what he's been made out to be. Not to mention, he's quite enticing to Alana as well.

The non-virgin heroine tries just as hard as the Laird of Darkness to not give into temptation, but passion is what they both seek -- and almost need. The pleasure they find in one another causes them both to question their duty and original goals and plans.

Nicole North brings a great, fast paced, uniquely crafted, highly sensual story in a matter of just over one-hundred pages. She's brought a uniqueness to the Highlander table in the creation of the Laird of Darkness. Half-Fae brothers who are lifelong enemies, each possessing different supernatural powers, is only one aspect of Ms. North weaving paranormal elements into an erotic historical highland story. Lady Alana Forbes is also more than what she seems.

While it's often hard to get a true sense of the characters in short novellas, Ms. North is able to move them pretty fast, I personally feel, from the fact that Lady Alana is not a virgin. She's the one that initiates the sexual interaction between her and Duncan (which is a great turn of events from most highland/historical stories). She's bold in her actions and her sensuality causing the 'action' to move forward quickly. And, the well developed sexual tension and erotic scenes are what really bring this couple together.

My "wish list" items for this novella are first off, I would have loved for it to have been longer; the world and the relationships a little more explored!! While the relationship between Alana and Duncan is wrapped up, it contained so many unique supernatural elements that I would loved to have known more about them, the clans people and their knowledge of the two supernatural Lairds, and the back story of the two Lairds mother and the dynamic family structure. Next, I would have loved to know more about Alana and her uniqueness! She also possesses something (I'm excluding what due to not giving away spoilers) that I want to know more about. I would have also loved to see the outcome between the two Lairds after the climax of the story.

What readers can expect to find between the covers is a handsome, dark, misunderstood, vulnerable hero who finds passion and a sense of peace in the arms of his light-haired heroine, uniquely crafted Lairds who possess diverse powers and a deep hatred for one another, and of course, highly sensual characters who heat up the pages in some very erotic scenes!

Nicole North has created a well written, fast paced, erotic, heart warming, pulse-racing, creatively fun, novella addition for the Highlander sub-genre. Her love and knowledge of Scotland comes through in details, and her fun spin on characters makes Laird of Darkness a very quick, engaging read. I would really love to see this world and characters revisited to find out more to my left over questions!

Laird of Darkness by Nicole North
* I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Laird of Darkness transports us to the Scottish Highlands. Duncan MacDougall has been roaming his lands at night for years. He can’t sleep at night or the creatures from the Otherworld will attack him. They are able to injure him, even in his dreams. The only time he even attempts to sleep for a few hours is during the daytime.

His half brother Kinnon MacClaren possess the one thing that will help him get rid of the nightmares, a magic bow. Their mother gave it to Kinnon before she was kidnapped by Duncan’s father. She died before during childbirth so Duncan never had a chance. She also had a curse put on both brothers because she feared they would kill each other.

Duncan is determined to get that bow and will do whatever it takes, even capturing Lady Alana, Kinnon’s bride-to-be. What he didn’t expect was to want keep Alana for himself. She was light to his darkness and surprised him every time he turned around.

Alana was surprised by Duncan’s kindness. She was his prisoner but he treated both her and her people well. She is afraid of the situation she will find when she gets to Lord MacClaren’s because they weren’t entirely honest with him. She is very much a woman who knows what she wants when it comes to carnal pleasures. She wants a man that is generous in bed and is a good lover.

I loved everything about this story. Duncan is my favorite type of hero, a very tortured hero that is misunderstood. He has been made out to be the villain because of actions his father took and he can’t shake that image. Everyone is afraid of him and the evil he possess. Alana is not afraid of him, instead she is drawn into his world. She finds him intriguing and is not afraid to ask him for what she wants, him.

The chemistry between Duncan and Alana is hot. He wants her, even though he knows he shouldn’t but he can’t stop himself. He is drawn to her like a moth to a flame. Alana has wanted him ever since she saw him nude the first time. All she can think about is the pleasure he can bring her. I like the fact that they also spend time together getting to know each other and it’s plain that when Duncan makes the ultimate sacrifice, that he has fallen in love with her.

The background is awesome and I like the twist that keeps the two half-brothers from stepping foot on the other’s land. Both brothers are acting based on history and they hate each other. Each one thinks they are the wronged party but in reality, the both are. I think Alana will help to bridge that gap between the two.

Overall I enjoyed The Laird of Darkness and give it 4 Flaming Hearts.

Duncan MacDougall knows better than anyone the monsters that lurk in the night. Half-fae and cursed with dreams that leave him exhausted and bloody, Duncan is determined to get his hands on a magical bow that can protect him from the Otherworld creatures. The problem is, the bow belongs to Duncan’s half-brother who refuses to hand it over. So Duncan does the only thing he can: he kidnaps the woman intended to be his half-brother’s bride and plans to barter her for the bow. Only Lady Alana Forbes is unlike any woman Duncan has ever met. In the space of a heartbeat, Duncan realizes he doesn’t want to ever let the sensual beauty go. With Otherworld creatures stalking his nightmares and a half-brother out for blood, will Duncan survive long enough to win the heart of the beautiful Alana?

Feuds, magic, danger, desire, and love whip up a storm in Laird of Darkness. Nicole North has penned a story brimming with possibilities that falls short of the mark I felt it could have hit were the story delivered in a longer format. There is so much going on in Laird of Darkness that it could have been a full-length novel without there being any slow points. As it stands, the mythology of Duncan’s world, the romance between he and Alana, the feud with his half-brother, and the resolution to everyone’s problems was simply too rushed. I appreciated that Alana was comfortable with her sexuality and was intrigued by her healing abilities. I also found Duncan’s sensuality and cursed heritage to be of interest. But, though I wanted to like the characters, world, and story, I felt like I was getting whiplash with the speed at which I was being jerked around and neither Duncan nor Alana were given enough time to develop into three-dimensional characters. Laird of Darkness has all the right materials for an excellent story and though I didn’t fall in love with it, I’d be willing to give another one of Ms. North’s books a try.

This was the first Highlander book I have ever read (I know, gasp, right!) and it did not disappoint. I had a little difficulty getting around the language of the book at first, but once I got used to it, the story flowed smoothly.

My first impression was that I did not like either of the characters. It could have been the time in which the story was set (historical is generally not appealing to me) but they came off as cold, snotty and irritating, especially Alana. But as I kept reading, I found that under all that propriety was a real woman with real desires. All she is looking for is the same thing every woman is looking for. Love, companionship and passion. Ok, great sex, too. ;) But Alana isn't just a damsel in distress with a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome. She's no pushover and she has talents that will be useful to Duncan, which she uses as a bargaining tool.

Duncan starts off as a hero, rescuing Alana from certain death, but quickly becomes the captor once he realizes who she is. Despite his plan to trade her for the bow that he so desperately needs, he soon discovers that he's not so keen on the idea of handing her over and the resulting passion is sizzling hot! However, after a deal is made with Alana, he stays true to his word and lets her go. It's this honorable gesture, along with the smoking hot romance, that makes me love Duncan.

The story was fast paced, intense, sweet at times and certainly a page turner!

This was a quick, easy, read. It was relatively predictable and the world building was interesting. I did not connect with the characters or the story as much as I would have liked to, but I think that might be the nature of the novella. The writing was sound, the relationship was thoughtful. I liked the relationship, but I'm starting to think I am not cut out for novellas, because I want more from my characters. I think this could have been a lot more than it was, if it was built on. There was just too much going on for such a short story. The intimate scenes were beautifully written, but without the rest of the story they weren't really enough to carry the book.

The ending was neat and tidy, practically with a bow on top. I wish I had more to say about it but it just didn't impress too much upon me. The part I do remember is the preposterous bullseye. Yes preposterous. Not at all believable.

As for the cover. sigh. I don't like it. I could go into why, but I don't want to.

This book left me wanting. I rolled my eyes so hard I got a headache. I didn't throw it across the room though (probably because there wasn't enough time) and for the same reason it probably didn't keep me up at night. A bit of WTFckry. Overall a meh.

I received this for review from NetGalley.

Laird of Darkness was an enchanting short story. It had the flavor of a fairy tale blended with a taste of the erotic. Half-fae Laird Duncan MacDougall is a dashing dark villain who’s actually a bit of a hero. His half-brother Laird Kinnon MacClaren is a hero who’s also a bit of a villain.

After Lady Alana Forbes is kidnapped by Duncan, she’s at once afraid of yet captivated by him. It doesn’t take long before their mutual attraction takes over and draws them together. But that leaves Duncan with a dilemma—does he trade her to Kinnon for the magic bow that will allow him to keep the night monsters away or does he admit his love for her even though he’ll continue to be attacked every night in his sleep?

Leave it to Lady Alana to work out a solution when the brothers cannot.

This is a short, entertaining story just right for that tiny wedge of down time that happens along every so often. Nicole manages to add all the right ingredients—love, danger, passion, and betrayal—and keep it bite-sized at just under eighty pages. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it left me feeling ridiculously happy.

The description of the book leads you to believe that you are going to be in for a thrilling action packed ride. Unfortunately, instead of getting a long and winding roller coaster, you get a short kiddy ride.

The idea was too big for the amount of space she opted for. This should have been fleshed out into a full fledged novel instead of a way too short novella. There was just not enough time to understand all the nuances between the different characters.

Another thing that I noticed is that this is supposed to be historical fiction. However, the author seems to have trouble staying in period. You either have to write it with period verbiage or write it with modern verbiage. You should not switch back and forth.

This one has to be rated a nice try, but not enough.

An erotic short story, this tasty little treat definitely delivers. While I would’ve loved to have seen a higher word-count to expound on the world-building, and to perhaps keep the pacing from feeling a bit rushed, I definitely enjoyed it anyway.

As is true for most short stories I read, I would love to see, if not the series itself, then at least this particular universe expanded upon in future works. I thoroughly enjoyed the mythology surrounding the half-brothers, and would love to read more involving Alana’s brand of celtic magic and the half-blooded fae abilities. The erotic elements were delicious without descending into vulgarity; there was quite a bit of crass language, but nothing that would really offend sensitive readers.

In the end, this was a quick, hot, enjoyable historical with enough paranormal and magickal aspects to keep things interesting. 4/5 Stars

Duncan is a half-Fae laird who is tormented by beasts in his sleep. One day, those monsters may kill him... unless he gets his hands on the enchanted bow and arrow his half-brother possesses. When Duncan unwittingly saves the life of his brother's betrothed, he sees an opportunity. He kidnaps the woman and offers to exchange her for the bow. Of course, Duncan has no way of knowing how attracted he would be to Alana. And just how much she would want him in return.

It was a sexy short story. Its 81 pages focused mostly on the tension and love scenes between Duncan and Alana. There's not much time for deep character development and it's hard to feel much of an attachment to our hero or heroine. (I also have to say, I wasn't a huge fan for some of the word choices used in reference to Alana's anatomy. Use of the word "cunny" seriously takes me out of the moment.) But it was an entertaining, quick read... with just a touch of magic. A fun, dirty distraction. 3 1/2 stars.

The Laird of Darkness by Nicole North is a short paranormal erotic novella. The two main characters are: half fae Laird Duncan MacDougall and Lady Alana Forbes. Laird MacDougall is cursed through his nightmares where he is tortured by Otherworld creatures that want to destroy him. In order for him to conquer his curse, he must obtain a magic bow. However, the bow is out reach because his estranged half-brother, Kinnon MacClaen, owns the coveted bow.

In order to obtain the bow, Laird MacDougall plots to steal the bow from Kinnon or create a trade - his half-brother’s betrothed for the bow. The plot is a good one in the Laird’s eyes until he falls for the beautiful Lady Forbes. He learns the truth of love and having to set it free. The story line is original and the love scenes add to the quick passion that ignites between the hero and heroine. This is a quick, entertaining read.

Happy Reading from Bona Fide Reflections!

This book was a novella, not a full scale novel, so there were a couple of areas that could have been more developed, but on the whole were not wholly necessary to the story. With that said, the story itself was charming. Duncan MacDougall is a half fae scottish laird trying to quiet his otherworldly nightmares. His answer comes not from a legendary bow, but from a most unexpected beautiful woman. Lady Alana is the unwitting hostage stuck between two waring brothers. I enjoyed the characters, Duncan had to hide his hurt, and fought between falling in love and fighting his nightmares. Alane proved to be a strong heroine. She stood up to Duncan’s domineering ways and brought out the more sensitive man he was hiding. In the end, the characters learn, grow, and do what’s right by each other. The story was sexy, touching, and overall a nice read.

The idea behind this book is promising, a Fae lord who captures a maiden after which chaos ensues, but the results leave something to be desired.
Characterization is sorely lacking, all the readers get is cardboard characters that do not have any life in them. Their actions are bizarre and their mood shifts verging on the psychotic. I could not understand how the supposed kidnapped woman could fall madly in love with her captor in the space of two pages. It just boggles the mind and makes me wonder at how the author’s head works. I know that a romance novel is all about the romance, but I think we still need plot development and believable dialogue.
A lot of the issues could have been solved by adding pages to this short novel. It all feels much too rushed, the resolutions to problems appearing so quickly we are left reeling in disbelief. Perhaps if the author had taken a bit more time with the story it would have been better. As it is, I’m hesitant to recommend it.

I LOVE Scottish heroes, and the fact that this one is half-Fae and looks like the guy on the cover may have made me a little biased, but this this was a really fun one for me. Of course our hero, Duncan, is dead sexy. But Alana, our heroine, is compelling as well. She's no wilting little miss. She wants a man who can fulfill her needs (yep, those kind of needs) and isn't afraid to fight for him. Without giving too much away, she was a breath of fresh air and a welcome departure from many of the more typical historical heroines I've read in the past. Plus, you've got action (the good kind, and the really good kind), paranormal elements and a bit of a love triangle. I breezed through it in a single sitting and was thoroughly entertained. I look forward to more from Nicole North and plan to go back and check out some of her earlier work.

When I first saw Laird of Darkness for review in Carina Press, I couldn’t help but think of my childhood hero, Highlander. The picture on the book definitely reminds me of that.

But this story is not about Highlander, but it’s some sort of an adult fairy tales, involving fight and betrayal between brothers, forbidden love as well as fiery passion.

If you’re a fantasy book lover, you would not want to miss Laird of Darkness. It does not dissapoint me and I’m sure it won’t disappoint you either.

It’s very well written and very inspiring. The passion in this story is almost devastatingly real.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

This short steamy novella, is enough to send you running to the nearest cold shower to cool off. Where to begin, I loved Duncan , the bad boy hot highlander , who kidnaps the unsuspecting bride to be of his half brothers hoping to trade him for what he desires most, the bow. and ends up falling at first in lust then in love with Alana.

At first I wasn't sure about Alana, I don't know why. Maybe I just felt bad for the bad boy or was it her attitude I'm not so sure but that didn't last long thankfully and I grew to like her as the novella progressed and hoped she wouldn't decide to be with whom she was supposed to marry.

The only thing I wish it could be longer because I really reading about Duncan and Alana. Would I recommend this yes, if you love hot highlanders like I do, with hot steamy mindblowing action this one is for you.

This is an Erotica so warning, it is very graphic.

Nicole North’s Laird of Darkness is a historical, highland, fae romance. Yes, all three wrapped into one tantalizing tale. Sexy and seductive, Duncan MacDougall is such a compelling character that I found myself hoping from the beginning that he was a “good guy” after all. I wish there would’ve been more in the book about his fae background but really the “fae” part of his character plays a very small part. There were several background characters, but Duncan and Alana dominate the story in such a way that the rest of the world disappears. Their love story is filled with sweet emotion and steamy sex you can’t help but want them together forever. Fast-paced and sensual, the only thing that could make it better was if it was longer. I’m not sure if there is going to be a follow up to Laird of Darkness, but I would be first in line to read more from this story.

I've never met a highlander I didn't like and Duncan is as hot as they get!

Laird of Darkness is a magical journey into the highlands of Scotland. Duncan MacDougall will steal your heart away! He comes off as harsh and brutish at first but you soon learn this half-Fae highlander is anything but. Alana seems like your typical innocent heroine but watch out, she's fiery and far from your virginal bride-to-be! Duncan and Alana have an instant attraction that grows into unbridled passion with each turn of the page. Their romance is a sizzling adult fairy tale that will leave you wanting...even after the happy ending!

This story is one of my favorites, with extra steamy love scenes and a dark, dangerous, supernatural and super sexy hero. Her strong yet vulnerable heroine has powers of her own and turns out to be the perfect complement for this tortured hero.

Nicole North expertly packs a full, complex and interwoven plot into this short story making for an exciting, mysterious, adventurous and sexy read. This book actually contains two loves stories and I look forward to reading the half-brother's story, which Ms. North set up so well.

The vivid imagery transported me to a magical Scottish land where legends come to life and I'd love to visit there again.
