I came across this Phonics Comics book I had bought for my daughter when she was younger, while looking for another one today. We never read it so we decided to read it before donating. Loved this very simple and colourful comic for beginning readers that is a twist on three classic fairy tales.
There are three very quick retells of Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The twist is these are not the scary stories that we were all led to believe in as kids.
In my opinion these are much better fairy tales! Definitely recommend for young readers (recommended for Level 3 confident readers) but very fun for anyone.
Phonics Comics! Definitely want to find more for my classroom. My only complaint is that the kids won’t know the original fairy tales or nursery rhymes to get all the humor.
Twisted Tales are graphic novels that put a twist on classic fairy tales. In this particular book, three tales are told in a new way. In Hansel and Gretel, the witch is actually nice, but the children wouldn't stop eating her house made of candy, so she locked them up so their parents would come and get them! Then, their father builds the witch a new house. Next is Little Red Riding Hood, the grandmother actually calls the wolf to come babysit little red. They play so many games, that the wold gets tired and dresses up like the grandmother so that she will stop wanting to play so many games. The last story is about the three billy goats gruff. In this tale, instead of a troll bridge, there is a toll bridge and the billy goats are the mean ones. In all of these stories, the twist is that the villain is actually the good guy, while the original victim or hero is really the trouble maker. This graphic novel is definitely for beginning readers. Each story is pretty short and use very simple sentences. There is a narrator, and also dialogue from the characters. The illustrations look like they are made digitally on a computer which I haven't seen in many books or graphic novels. The pictures are very colorful and eye catching. Also, I like that there are three different stories in one, because it gives the reader a sense that they are reading a lot, even though the stories are pretty short. This is good for children who don't like to read much because it lets them feel like they are accomplishing a lot, and want to read more.
