Kane and his friends at Ravens Pass Middle School just want winter to end. They are tired of the snow, the cold and the boredom. When the new lunch lady, Ms. Garrity, offers everyone free hot chocolate at lunch, the whole school can't wait for lunchtime. Everyone that is, except Kane. He's allergic to chocolate. When Kane and his friends arrive at the cafeteria, they discover the place is crazy. Everyone is in a frenzy for the treat! People have blank looks in their eyes and chocolate stains around their mouths and down their chins. Kane decides he'll skip the craziness and head for the library instead. When he gets to the library, he discovers three students attacking Mr. Theodore, the librarian. The students have turned into zombies! He must escape the school and the hordes of zombie students and then figure out a way to defeat them!
This high interest story is perfect for reluctant readers, for who doesn't want to read a book with a creepy zombie in a red hoodie on the cover? It'll easy snag the reader's attention and he'll zoom through the action. It's not a perfect story, though. I had way too many questions about some plot holes and the ending was conveniently simple. Maybe a bit rushed, in my opinion. C rating.
So just had to read this even though it was a young kids book. I needed to see what zombies would give children nightmares. Let me list some pros and cons: Cons -creepy brown liquid from mouths. EW! -librarian gets injured (Boo!) -creepy scene in the library. No wonder kids are afraid to read. Might get them killed. -ruined cocoa for me -kid is allergic to chocolate OMG. -creepy hermit man with a secret tunnel.. 0_0 -lunch lady a war hog.
Pro -great illustrations. Black and white pencil etchings.
Quick read and even though I was weirded out by some of the events, I still thought it was a great kids book.
Weird book, but I read it so I could tell some kids who like scary stories if it was good or not. Definitely on a fourth or lower grade level. Very strange, and not very scary, but for 9 or 10-year-old mentality, probably worth reading. Free book from the library conference, so can't go wrong there.
This is a great story for a struggling reader - or even a young reader because it isn't really scary, but the story was over before it really got started. There wasn't much of a build up to the intense part of the story and even that ended before it had a chance to get interesting. Honestly, I feel like he forgot to put half the story in.
If you have this book at home and you did not read it you should read it I say it is a good book so get it out and read it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a high concept book that does exactly what it says on the tin. It has a terrible Pre-Death Quip that made me roll my eyes and laugh, partially because it was accompanied by a smirk. But there was enough tension going on even as short as the book is to warrant an attention span from children. A bit of a unique premise with these zombies, which made me raise my eyebrows appreciatively. Recommended for kids in grades 3-5 that want a mild horror/mystery novel. Or horror/science fiction. The language is appropriate for readers in that age range.
Ravens Pass is experiencing another cold, snowy day, and a warm mug of hot chocolate is welcomed by just about everyone. But middle schooler Kane Tuttle can't drink any since he's allergic to chocolate. It's a good thing, too, since the beverage seems to be turning everyone in the school into zombies. It's up to Kane to save the day and rid the town of zombie queen Ms. Garrity before it's too late. Things happen very fast in this book, which will please reluctant readers, but I could have used a lot more character development. I'd hardly met Kane and his friend Nick Ellis before most of the school had become zombified.
i got this book for my students, but decided to read it for myself first... it was horrible... and yes i know that obviously this book was written for children, but the story elements and plot were just horrible!
I read this for my zombie loving family and students. Reading level 2.5. Not gory. I don't understand how hot chocolate makes students zombies.Good questions at end for writing. 71 pgs.
Weird story about a kid stuck in a tiny town that becomes over run with zombies after being tricked into drinking tainted hot chocolate served by a 100 year old witch. At least it wasn't terrible!
