When Rick and Marilyn Boyer began homeschooling a decade and a half ago, they didn't know what they were getting into. Fifteen years later, they know exactly what they got into, and they love it! In Home Educating with Confidence, the Boyers share what they have learned through their homeschooling experience. They believe learning is a natural function that can happen better at home than anywhere else and that ordinary parents CAN produce extraordinary children! In an anecdotal style they address everything from getting started to planning for college and career.
I appreciated the common sense take on homeschooling that Rick Boyer offers. He definitely has a few quirky biases (actually they will sound very familiar to some of us) that I think will be a little off-putting to certain readers for very little gain. He also was very anti-formal school to a level that I don’t agree with but can certainly respect. Apart from those two issues, I thought a lot of his advice was solid.
An American father of 12 shares his views on learning and education. There are some good sections: he separates education from 'schooling' and tlks of the importance of motivation and following children's interests. However there are also some strange (and sometimes irrelevant) biases in the book, such as his objection to Christian rock music and the television.
