Virginia Haviland was for many years the Director of the Children's Literature Center at the Library of Congress and was also author of more than two dozen books. She was graduated from Cornell University, and for her dedication to children's literature, she was awarded the Regina Medal in 1976.
All but one tale (Drakestail) in this collection were VERY familiar, and once again, there is no attempt to connect these particular stories to France. Though fine retellings, they could have been set anywhere.
I think the author did a fair job, but the stories are creeping.
Beauty and the Beast - beast value is on how much money he has and ignores the girl all day except for 9pm in the evening when he asks her to marry him and when she obviously says "no" he sulks alone for another 24 hours.
