All that Tara wants is for her mommy to be happy. (And a puppy.)
Kirin are supposed to be lucky, but Vivian feels like her own luck is anything but good.
Vivian had a literal unicorn…and tragically lost him while she was three months pregnant and chasing a three-year-old. Her daughter is a Chinese unicorn like her father was and can’t finish a meal in less than an hour, her son is eight months and already has four teeth, and she’s working full-time as a nurse. She doesn’t have the time, or the heart, for romance, no matter how handsome the new visiting pediatrics doctor is, and she definitely doesn’t have time for a puppy.
As a unicorn shifter, Doctor Becket can heal anything…except for a broken heart. The only problem is that every time he does, he loses a little bit of his own time and life. He’s made peace with this trade-off, traveling and quietly saving people all over the world while he can…until he meets a courageous woman who reminds him what there is left to live for.
With people starting to sniff around after the secrets of Nickel City, including his own, Becket has a hard choice to make. Instinct tells him that Vivian’s home, with her two adorable children and their new-found puppy, is exactly where he needs to be, but how can he risk her happiness and safety?
Is it possible that Vivian will get two unicorns in her lifetime…and lose them both?
Unicorn’s Instinct is a funny and touching tale of healing and heart, with a guaranteed happy ever after, lots of laughs, adorable children…and one lucky puppy.
Elva Birch is an author of the impossible and irresistible. She is a fire dragon Gemini living in Alaska who belly dances outside at twenty below in the winter and loves to find tiny fairy moss worlds in the summer with her camera.
Elva also writes SHIFTING SANDS RESORT, GREEN VALLEY SHIFTERS, and FAE SHIFTER KNIGHTS as Zoe Chant.
4 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 - A sweet shifter romance with a little bit of steam, a lot of heart and a hefty dose of drama. The plot is a little contrived at times, but the characters are very lovable. This is an enjoyable short and undemanding read in a charming shifter daddy romance series that pulls at the heart strings.
I picked this one up for a scavenger hunt. It's a unique shifter romance with a unicorn shifter that uses his ability to save people. I liked the sweet romance in this one and I would like to continue the series. The is my first by the author and I know I read it out of order but I don't think that hurt the series. I ended up reading it in one reading session.,
Vivian, mother to little Tara and baby Shane, meets the temporarily assigned pediatrician, Becket, at the medical practice where she works - with her mouth stuffed with his homemade cookies. His instincts lead him to pursue her even though his life clock is ticking down. Her instincts prompt her to respond to him even though she's lost one unicorn already. And in the background, a hunter pursues them both. The ending is KNOT what you think!
FAVORITE QUOTE: "He was a complete, careless clod, and he wouldn’t blame Vivian for being furious with him. How was he going to make this up to her? How could he possibly make any of this right? Becket went to get a fresh shirt and turned on the oven. He could start by making cookies."
Unicorn's Instinct (Day Care for Shifters, #3) is an angsty ride. The mom-stress transported me back to my twenties, impending death had my sympathetic nerve twitching, cuteness made me sigh, giggle and smile, and character charisma wrapped in a love blanket had me ignoring my adult responsibilities.
Elva Birch's way of weaving sweetness into the most bitter of circumstances makes her a magical literary alchemist. She can turn a phrase into gold with just a flick of her wrist. Please read if you'd like a little glimpse into that magical world!
This story is a part of a series but can be read as a standalone. Also, for the record, the floppy donkey's name is Dinky.
Great story, but very different tone from all the others!
Becket is a unicorn shifter with a limited amount of time left because every time he heals someone, he loses some of his life. He travels around and ends up at Nickel City, where he meets his nurse, Vivian. Vivian is a single mother with 2 kids, a toddler Chinese unicorn shifter Tara, and the baby Shane. But now that Becket has met Vivian and the kids, he doesn't want to lose what time he has left. Can he really stop healing people who really need it, though? You will want to have tissues handy when reading this story near the end. It is a powerful and thought provoking one. I can't wait for the next one to come out, A Griffin's Instinct, I think she said.
The pace is breakneck and the tone is uncertain and heartbreaking, with a character oriented storyline that has some action and some steamy scenes. The characters are vivid and engaging. The puppy is totally adorable! You don't have to read any of the other books in this series, but I would recommend reading them in order, starting with Day Care for Shifters #1, then all 4 of the First Time for Love novellas, then #2 and finally this one, which starts near the end of #2, if I remember correctly! These shifter romances have a beautifully different shifter world. If that along with some action sounds good to you, then try these books! You will have fun!
I picked up this book because it fit a reading a challenge, and I was not expecting much. The series name and the cartoony pics on the cover really threw me. But just goes to show you, never judge a book by its cover because this book is ...
Vivian is a widowed mother of two. Her husband died about a year ago, and she's been raising her 4-year-old and 8-month-old on her own while dealing with the grief of her loss. I think the author did such a phenomenal job of writing Vivian. She got the rushed, overwhelming job of motherhood down perfectly.
Vivian lives in sort of a shifter town. While shifters are still secret, a great many live there, so there is a day care designed for their care where she takes her kids, too. (I guess that's the story behind the series, but this was the only one I read, so I'm not sure how important it is in other stories. In this one, it's just the place she drops off her kids on the way to work, and nothing else really significant.)
Vivian works at a clinic, and they've recently hired in a traveling doctor, Dr. Becket, to fill in for the season. When he arrives, the two are instantly attracted to each other, but both have reasons to be wary of starting a relationship. Vivian because she's not too sure if she's ready to date, and Becket because he knows he doesn't have much longer to live.
Becket is a unicorn shifter, and he has the power to heal people, but whenever he does, he trades it for a bit of time shaved off his life. It was such a cool concept, and I loved the world-building around this.
Just so much of this was good. I loved all the characters so much and really appreciated that the author didn't fall back on diminishing Vivian's relationship with her former husband to make the one with Becket work. So many authors handle the dead spouse problem by saying the old relationship wasn't a good one, but it was lovely reading about a FMC who had loved her first husband and was still able to move on.
I loved Beckett, Vivian, Tara and Shane’s fated mates, single mom romance. The story will give you all the feels - laughing, crying, swooning, cringing, teeth gritting, and cheering. Beckett is a unicorn shifter and a pediatrician. He is doing contract work because the use of his magic is shortening his lifespan. He moves to the shifter friendly town of Nickel City to work in a clinic. Vivian is a human nurse who works at the clinic. She is also a widow with two children, one of which is a Chinese unicorn shifter. There is instant chemistry and connection between Beckett and Vivian but Beckett is reluctant to start a relationship with Vivian which may result in another loss for her. Thus begins the emotional journey to their HEA. The book is fairly low angst and has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, light steam, laughs, light danger, adorable children, the cutest puppy, painful pasts, surprises, hope, potential death, and lots of swoony love. The children, especially Tara, were a wonderful and integral addition to the story rather than a flimsy story prop. The story was well written with relatable and lovable characters with dimension and an engaging storyline. I’ll definitely keep reading this series.
Book 3 in the Day Care for Shifters series, as usual for this author, this book can easily be read as a standalone. That said, the main characters as well as many secondary characters are introduced in the earlier books, so you do get more background on both the characters and the world building by reading the series in order,
I was intrigued by Tara and her kirin on first meeting her in book 1 as I’m always interested in the more unusual shifter animals, so I‘ve been looking forward to learning her and her mom’s story. Both Beckett and Vivian show so much courage and grace when faced with extremely difficult choices it moved me to tears at times—truly living in the moments that we have is definitely a lesson I could learn from the two of them. Then Becket and Tara were so sweet together I almost cried from a different emotion, lol.
The author warns at the very start that this book is emotional, and it lived up to that promise as I both laughed and cried, sometimes within a single sentence. With a puppy adding joy and laughter, people desperate for Becket’s abilities to pull on the heartstrings, and a villain or two for suspense, this was a beautiful and engaging story, with an underlying (but not preachy) message I think we all need to hear from time to time.
Becket Saved By Viv Made Four! 4.55***** Spoiler Alert!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. We disclose this in accordance with 16 CFR §255.
Just a bit too silly and unbelievable for me with way too many things left unanswered. Why is this such an isolated story. We get no interaction with any of the previous book characters. This is set either in the clinic or Vivian’s house. No going into town, to the cafe, Tiny Paws or any social events, except for Halloween. And even then we didn’t get anyone else interacting. Could be a totally different series. The only connection is that Becket is the one who saved Ian. How are they going to explain Timothy’s MIRACULOUS recovery? Becket himself even uses the term unexplained miracle and undue questions when thinking of being able to treat shifter children in the clinic. What happened to Hunter? WHO was David? Just annoying with all, these things left unanswered. Read in the box set.

DNF at 31%. Pity. I was really looking forward to Becket's story. It is just so unfortunate that Vivian's breasts are also characters in this story. Seriously not even halfway through and Vivian's breasts have been mentioned 15 times that is pretty much one mention in every single chapter and the characters haven't even had sex yet. It's ridiculous and blatantly obvious and extremely cringey. Vivian also talks to her breasts as if they are sentient several times. I skimmed a few chapters near the ending and while I'm glad there is a happily ever after none of the additional plot points made me want to go back and read it fully. Hopefully the next one will be more to my liking. This series seems to have been very hit or miss for me although this is the first one I haven't finished.

This book should come with a warning label! Actually, it did. Right there at the beginning. Becket's story has all the feels. Grief, destiny, learning to enjoy the time you have here to the best of your ability. Perhaps it was because I had experienced an emotional blow hours before reading this one, it felt so much deeper than the others in this series. I couldn't help but to love both MCs I loved learning more about little Tara, and you can't help but to fall in love with her, too. Whether she writing as Elva Birch or Zoe Chant, this author builds worlds that I wish I could live in Keep em' coming Elva, can't wait for the next (gryphon!) installment.
An emotional story worth reading. I love the humor in the story. The little girl who can see what is to come, like a puppy she is getting. When you have to decide if helping heal someone is worth time in your life. Its definitely something to think about especially once you find a family that you want to live for. The story has some humor in it as well. Love the thing the little girl has to say such as excuses to stay up later, names for the puppy and having candy for dinner. She's lucky! The story really touches you. Make sure you have Kleenex just in case you need it. Well written story.
What do you get when you have a widowed, non-shifting mother struggling to raise very young shifting kids, a male unicorn who is struggling with a known future event, and a puppy? A story worth reading!
Elva, known as one of the writers of Zoe Chant books, included a nugget in here from the Shifting Sands series, and it made me positively giddy since I had participated in the Kickstarter project.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, to my shifter book friends who want a light read. 4 stars means it is wonderful, but I will only read it once. 2 chili's for spice.
I enjoyed the very realistic and adorable children (4-year-old Tara, 8-month-old Shane) and their puppy. The key adults, Vivian and Becket, were complex, interacting naturally and honestly. Their mutual appreciation of each other's personal and professional qualities made them as realistic as the children were. The unicorn's gift was delicately presented; its price was clear. Vivian and Becket stretched beyond their comfort zones several times to create the life they wanted. The ending was very satisfying.
Oh my, as you said I laughed and cried. These two was definitely meant to be together. And I love Tara how she can see what happens before it does. I wander what Shane will be shifter or be like his Mommy. I also wander if we heard the last of money hungry Hunter, lets hope David put a end to that happening. ..big fan as always and patiently waiting for the next book in this series...
This Day Care for Shifters book number three is more emotional than books one and two. The tears and laughter are worth the journey. The HEA was not quite what I expected but was thoroughly satisfying. Now I’m looking forward eagerly to the next book in the series. Will it too be both too short and too long? I expect so. Enjoy all of the books in this and related series!
Good book, love this series! I smiled a lot through this one, yet it also has a big part of the story that is painful. If you're someone who cries during books and movies, you may want a stash of Kleenex. I read this straight through, well, I did fail asleep but finished it when I woke. It'll take you back and forth, laughter and sadness, and you're carried along with characters I loved telling the story. I hope you enjoy it too! 🐝✋🏽🐺
An emotional read but worth reading. I love the humor in the story. The little girl who can see what is to come like a puppy she is getting. When you have to decide if helping someone is worth time in your life. It's definitely something to think about especially once you find a family that you want to live for. The story has some humor in it as well. Love the things the little girl has to say such as excuses to stay up later, names for the puppy, and having candy for dinner. She's lucky! The story really touches you. Make sure you have kleenex just in case you need it. Well written story.
I love all of this series but this one was superb!
The whole "Day-care for Shifters" series is a delightful mixture of feelings, real-world issues, and simple fun. "Unicorn's Instinct", however, actually brought tears to my eyes.
I'm obviously not going to explain where or why, however I am sure that it will tug your heartstrings every bit as much as it did mine. It is fortunate that the humour and "happy feelings" parts are also so well written as the balance throughout is wonderful.
As the author says before you start, this is both a laughing and crying book. James, the unicorn, has a proverbial ax hanging over his head. The question is will it fall? I really had to fight myself to keep from sneaking a peek at the last chapter to make sure all turns out well. Glad I followed the journey the author set out So.. may rip your heart out. Highly recommend
This was worth the wait! This book has everything! Love, loss and new love! I love that we find out more about Tara. Vivian’s ability to love, take things as they are and show the real fears and struggles of moms is amazing. Beckett helps others at the expense of himself and does so willing. Love their chemistry as well as Tara, Shane and the puppy!!!
This was a story full of emotion. Becket was an amazing character. Vivian, also amazing, had such a huge heart and ability to make the most out of life. Tara, well she was just adorable. Add in the puppy without a name and you have the perfect read. This is my honest opinion of an early copy I received.
This series has been pretty low angst. Not this one! (The angst is not in the relationship.) This one has some sad moments, and the heroine has to be an action hero to get her happily ever after.
Luckily, I love low angst and a little action, and I can enthusiastically recommend this book.
I love this book. The warning was warranted. I love how Tara is and the cute puppy that didn’t have a name in the beginning but had so much throughout. There are the sad parts but in the end, it was a happily ever after. I can’t wait for the next one
Ok, so most of this book I was not sure it was my cup of tea. I do not like sad dramas. I really liked the hero and heroine, and I loved the little girl. But the angst with him going to die was bringing me down. I am glad I stuck with it though. Things started to happen, and the book had an awesome ending.
Have your tissues at the ready when you read this story. So much emotion is in this book that I want to read it again, to feel the good as well as the bad. This author has done herself proud in giving us this book. This book is part of a series and is getting better as each book is written. Read all the series as you will enjoy all of them.
This is the third book in A Day Care for Shifters and once again I was hooked start to finish. This one takes you on a emotional ride as well as giving you laughs and romance. I loved Vivian and Becket's story and of course little Tara is absolutely adorable. This series is amazing and I'm excited to read the next book.
Bring the tissues. Although you know it’s going to have a happy ending a section of this book will have you in tears. Elva is skilled and balancing tears and laughter.
Absolutely loved this series so it's a well deserved five stars and I would recommend this book/series to everyone as I couldn't put it down loved the characters and the storyline
