The Last Dragons #2

The Dragon's Ambivalent Sacrifice

Rate this book
After years of abuse, she believed she was worth nothing. But when she is sacrificed to a dragon she becomes his treasure. Born of violence, Beryl is the biggest and brawniest of his dragon shifter brothers. His beast loves a good fight and has been nicknamed The Hulk after his heroes; Incredible and Hogan. When his last fight gets out of control and his dragon nearly kills another shifter, he knows the only thing that will wrangle the beast is a female sacrifice. However, when the human he's destined to mate with arrives, she's small and meek and cringes from his touch. With a prostitute as a mother and a pimp as a boyfriend, Poppy is all too familiar with the violent tendencies of the opposite sex. The unsightly spots on her skin make her unsuitable for work on the streets. Her lack of skills in the kitchen disqualify her as a domestic goddess. So when she is sacrificed to a fire breathing dragon, she's certain it's as a late night snack. Though the hulking man's gentle touch awakens a desire she's never felt before, his brutish ways aggravate the wounds she keeps hidden. Beryl realizes he can't continue to brawl and earn his timid mate's trust. He's willing to be patient, but with each day she isn't claimed, his beast gets worse and other shifters become more of a threat. To accept Beryl's claim, Poppy will need to overcome her past and learn to love herself, something she's not sure she could ever do -even for the gentle giant she's falling for. If you love alpha male shifters, fated mates, and steamy romance with a touch of 80's nostalgia, then you don't want to miss The Last Dragons series!

Oh Beryl, sweet sweet Beryl. What a caring protective soul. I really am enjoying this series. I love how it's like they're in an 80's-90's timecapsule; The Princess Bride, Madonna, the old WWE characters and references, and of course the Incredible Hulk - it's a hoot. Poor Poppy she so deserved to be loved and cherished. Beryl helped her to see that she was beautiful and worthy and his most precious treasure. I can't wait now to read about whether Kimber finally claims Cardi so definitely on to the next one!!

I really liked this book and Poppy and Beryl as a couple. Both of these characters each had issues to overcome and I loved that their meeting helped bring about these changes. These two tugged at my heartstrings. Poppy's history just broke my heart and Beryl's struggle too control his fierceness and aggression, along with his patience and care for Poppy had me feeling totally swoony. I found it very enjoyable and look forward to reading more of this series. This is my independent, impartial review.

Beryl is the eldest brother to a set of triplets, the biggest, the baddest the best (well in Beryl’s opinion anyway)
He’s a fighter, a wrestler, bodybuilder, the quickest at mining for precious stones, and an awesome games player (again his opinion) he’s a total big head and bully in my eyes. He’s picks on his younger brother and will fight anyone over anything!
But reading further into the book, we see a side many don’t, the dragon and man want a treasure to protect and love (what’s the use of these muscles if nothing to protect) and to be loved in return.

Poppy isn’t loved, or protected. After her mother died, there is only Bruce! A bully, a letch and a total pig! If he’s not beating her, then it’s just using her body for his own pleasure!
Her appearance can’t even get her working on her back (she has marks all over her, a little like leprosy!)
Maybe the next beating will kill her! Here’s hoping!

The Veil is technically a wall or shield protecting The Garden of Eden! God is actually a goddess and likes to tinker with her creations! That’s how this dimension came about. To protect the species that are behind it.
Halflings (part dragon part human) women who will die before they are twenty are the key to having a mate, their ailments are what makes them different (so in fact Poppy doesn’t have leprosy but in fact scales!)

I’ll have to admit, I didn’t want Beryl to get a mate, well maybe, but not yet. I didn’t think he deserved one, he’s a bully, he thinks because he has muscles he’s entitled to everything. But having Poppy as his mate might actually be a good thing, he will have to temper his rage, use his brain instead of his brawn, and think of someone else for a change.
Poppy was definitely a victim of abuse, you feel so sorry for her.
But she’s not completely down for the count, she might not have defended herself when her boyfriend hit her, but when she finds evidence he’s abused a child, all bets are off!
Being rescued by the Valkyrie and brought through the veil was the best thing for Poppy. Having someone fight in her corner and care about her makes her nervous, she knows it could all come crashing down around her. So Beryl is going to have to take it slow with his treasure. It doesn’t help that he has to fight his younger brother for her, or lions try to take her from him!

Watching beauty tame her beast was really good.

Need to read more brothers getting their “treasures”

Poppy has been abused in every way imaginable. When a Valkyrie shows up and offers to whisk her away from her horrid life, Poppy assumes she's died. But who knew that Heaven would be full of dragon shifters? Beryl is the burliest of them all. A gym rat who's obsessed with '80s wrestling icons, being "tame" isn't really in his wheelhouse. But if Beryl doesn't learn how to rein it in, he'll never stand a chance of winning over Poppy's tender, bruised heart.

The author doesn't shy away from detailing the horrors of Poppy's childhood and adult life. Given all she's survived, it's no wonder that Poppy displays such a learned helplessness when faced with Beryl. It was super sweet to see how he was so careful and reassuring around her, but I wish that it would have occurred to him (or someone else had mentioned to him) that he should let her take charge and set the pace of their relationship.

Overall, I liked the story's twist on a supernatural realm and would definitely be curious to see more of it. I hope that the rest of the dragon brothers get their HEA too.

*Spoilers*

Beryl is the last of his brothers to claim a mate. His beast is quickly starting to take over him, in and out of the ring. Keeping his Dragon in control during the cage fights is getting to be a problem. The Valkerie, Morrigan must hurry to find his sacrifice before it is too late.
Poppy is living a tortured life with the abusive drug dealer and pimp Bruce. Her life has known not In but pain and sorrow since her mother has been sent to jail for killing her child molester. She needs a savior, and fast. Little does Poppy know that she will show up soon.
Morrigan comes to take Bruce to his death, and to collect Poppy for sacrifice. But not the kind most think of. One of pleasure and adoration. Beryl intercepts Poppy for his brother. Can she tame the Hulk of a Dragon inside his Hulk of a man?

Soooooo good!!!!

I forgot how much I love shifter romances. Especially Dragon shifters. Well this one I thoroughly enjoyed. Beryl had been waiting for the Valkyrie to bring him his own sacrifice. But he wasn't prepared for Poppy and how broken and vulnerable she was. Poppy in new world was unsure of her place and what her role was being Beryl's sacrifice. To say this story was interesting is putting it mildly. Beryl and Poppy's story is an amazing adventure of Dragon shifter and his treasure fighting their inner demons and finding their place in each other's hearts and souls. I have to say i keep laughing and cringing at Cardi's Madonna want to be ensemble. I'm like can someone please update her on the Madonna AFTER her Like a Virgin album?! Maybe get her the Vogue album geez. But I loved the second book in this series. I highly recommend it to anyone that loves a sexy Alpha Dragon shifter romance. You will not be disappointed.

What an incredible read! It starts with a dragon and long-term shifters- in human form in a cage match. It comes close to getting out of hand, but the winner gets it together in time. Then his mate is delivered by the Valkyrie Morrigan and the troubles begin. Poppy ends up in situations she shouldn't be in mainly because she doesn"t understand the world she now lives in. She and her new found friends have one adventure after another. This is action filled with sexy scenes and emotions. Loved it! While part of a write-up is easily enjoyed stand alone.

I enjoyed this story - second in the series. We get to see more of the dragon's world beyond the veil.

Note - The "sacrifice" (love interest) in this story is a victim of abuse. It is handled gently, but I wanted to mention.

Poppy's history with men being only interested in their needs throws Beryl for a loop. The man who prides himself on being strong needs to find a way to be soft and gentle with Poppy. I loved seeing Beryl and Poppy's growth as characters and as a couple. They both find themselves, which warmed my heart.

I an looking forward to the next story.

From one enslavement to another? Poppy has lived a demeaning poor life. Her mother was prostitute and after she died, a pimp named Bruce forced her into being his sex slave, maid, and cook. But then a strange creature saves her from Bruce and brings her to a land where there are dragon shifters and she is given to Beryl, and dragon shifter and fighter. He wants to treasure her and treat her like a queen but Poppy is waiting for the “shoe to drop”. What will she have to do to keep in his good graces? Or has she truly been given to someone who wants to love and protect her? I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review

The Dragon's Ambivalent Sacrifice. This book was interesting. I am not too much into the 80s scene they are in, but the romance between Beryl and Poppy was exciting! These dragons really go out of their way to show love to their women. The description of Beryl had me questioning how big are these dragons? I look forward to the next book, because the little taste of what Kimber and Cardi are going through makes me wonder what will happen next. This book 2 in The Last Dragons Series is a very well-written story about Dragon Shifters that have really great characters. These wonderfully written characters, flaws and all, will make you feel their emotions and you will root for them to make the connection. They have wonderful chemistry. This wonderful story has the following: intrigue, twists and turns, adventure, action, danger, love, steam and a HEA. It is a fast-paced, good Alien Romance book that will keep you engaged from start to finish. I will be looking for more books by this author and I bought the first book in series to catch up.

Poppy has strange marks all over her body. She was almost raped as a child, her mother went to prison for murder. She was living with a mean pimp when an "angel" saves her. She is taken behind the veil and she meets Beryl, oldest of the triplet dragon shifters. He punishes her by giving her orgasms. She has to learn to stop putting herself down and to stand up for herself. I loved this story and can't wait to read the next one. There are still three brothers who haven't met their mates yet and I hope each one gets their chance. Interesting concept of the veil. Thank you. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of the book.

There’s so much fun mythology and pop culture in this book series
Dragon shifters need mates. in a fantasy realm with limited contact to earth they have to rely on other creatures to find the right human women
Poppy had a crappy abusive life and its great to see what a big change it is to be loved and cared for in the shifter world. Her hulk like dragon is a great hero, only wants to please her
The family members are great and I wanted to learn more about their own stories

Beryl and Poppy are so different yet share the same need for love, security and belonging. The world that Poppy comes from is so dark and repressive! Beryl’s world beyond the veil is a fantasy complete with new beings, social rules and an answer for Poppy about her self worth. I loved the dynamics between the beings beyond the veil as well as Beryl and a Poppy as they sort out their relationship. An enjoyable read with several pop culture references and a strong bridge to the next book. I received an ARC from Booksprout in exchange for my honest review.

This was such a fun read full of insta-love and some great 80s references. I liked that Poppy had to find a way past her traumatic past and that Beryl (the Hulk), fierce and desperate for a mate, had to learn to tone his aggression down if he wanted a chance with Poppy. These obstacles, although not the same, made their coming together a great read and really had me invested in the outcome. Expect some humour, drama, dragons hooked on the 80s and a sweet hot love to keep you glued to your reader and looking forward to the next book in the series.

An author who's work have only recently discovered, she has a way of drawing you into her characters lives and becoming caught up in her world. Great escapism if like me you like to explore other realms, and the added benefit of a wonderful developing story of the relationship between Beryl & The Hulk who carry scars but will learn to be true to themselves and find inner strength. Will definitely be checking out further works by this author.

Poppy goes from slave to treasured mate. Great mythical story line with emotion, suspense and character development and growth. Poppy has dealt with cruelty all her life feels unwanted and unloved while Beryl is huge, impulsive and suffers from guilt feelings towards his brothers and mother. I enjoyed the supporting characters and luckily since I am a super hero fan, I got the references to hulk.I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next book.

Loving it. There is a garden of Eden but it no longer exists in our realm. Within it are shifters, fairies and other magical creatures. Beryl has pleaded and bribed the Valkyries to bring him a woman fit to be his sacrifice. A sacrifice isn’t what you think but is so much more. Poppy has been treated like nothing her whole life. But the visit by one Valkyrie will change everything she knows and believes in. The story has romance but it is also very funny. You have to love the whimsical ways things are done and how everyone acts. Just love this series.

Poppy was treated like crap by Bruce he hit her whenever he thought that she did something wrong or force himself on her. But Morgana saved her but killed Bruce, because she was of dragon blood. The sores on her skin were scales like a dragon. She was given to Beryl a dragon for his mate who took some of his emeralds for payment. Poppy fell in love with him and he loved her after they got past the way she felt and the lion problems it got better for them! Now I am ready for the next book!

Valkyrie rock!

We need them here to clean up the wicked! I want a dragon too. I'm enjoying the series. Shifter romance seem unrealistic. The twist being in the garden of Eden gives it a wee touch of a possibility. As a red head myself and always loved dragons I get an extra kick out of this series. No cliffhanger or cheating, overall quality of writing is good, and you get some steamy intimacy scenes and it ends on a happy note. Enjoy 🤓

This is the second book in this series. This is the journey of Beryl and Poppy. The journey will be a tough fight but they will get there. The characters fit well together and once they give into their attraction their chemistry is steamy. I enjoyed reading this book and series. I couldn't put it down. I am looking forward to read the next book in this series. You will not be disappointed.

This was an ok read. I think the experience would have been improved if I had read the first book in the series before reading this one and I would advise others to do so. The lack of background context and knowledge would have helped me understand the relationships between the dragons and the fire-born women. I did like the touches of humour; Leander the poet lion cracked me up!

Entertaining Magical Dragons!!

Poppy has dealt with a skin condition her entire life, and the cruel remarks of those around her. She is captured and brought into a magical realm where she is introduced to a dragon who wants to claim her as his mate. He sees the “fire” within her and considers her a treasure. Can he break through her armor and convince her of her worth to him? Emotional and entertaining.

Beryl and the hulk what a story this book turned out to be. She has scars with living with her mum. And not so good boyfriend and hulk well he is a dragon shifter needing help. I loved how the characters developed together and a bond came. They needed each other to have a happy life. I thought this book was great.

I’m loving this series about women who are being sacrificed to dragons but instead they fall in love with their dragons and this is Poppy’s and Beryl’s story. I was sad for Poppy for the life that she was given in no choice of leading, she was given to Beryl he had to change his ways of being a brutish fighter to claim his mate. I loved this story it’s a fantastic read and I highly recommend this book.

Very Good Read

I really enjoyed this book. Though it followed many of the standard paranormal elements, the intricate dealings with dieties(the Valkyries), and the Valhalla (heaven) where varieties of shifters all lived together peacefully, peaked my interest and kept me glued to the end. I'll have to look at the rest of the series. The author writes well, with imagination, and keeps you in suspense. Enjoy!

Poppy gas been used and abused all her life from the time she was a child,so she always submitted. since coming to the veil and meeting Beryl she has learned differently. she has found love and is lived and treasured. Wonderful series and author only wish they had and extended epilogue but so the story goes. Would highly recommend. 🙂

I fell right back into the Veil world and never want to leave. I cannot wait to see where the next book will take us. I hope all of the characters get their HEA. The Valkyries will make you sit up and notice immediately. This book really shows that the love of the right man will make any woman strong.

The story has good bones but it should be filled out more. The characters are well thought out and the story line is good. I feel disappointed because it seemed to end too soon but isn't that the mark of a good book? I would read more books in this series because the characters are interesting.
