A prince without power

In a land where magic is commonplace, Prince Llyskel has none. He can’t command spells, he has never been taught to fight, and as the fifth son of the King, he will never rule. Everyone believes he’s a weakling, most of all himself.

Powerlessness is Llyskel’s problem—and his pleasure. In his secret fantasies, the prince dreams of nothing more than finding himself helpless at another man’s hands… particularly the hands of Captain Ariv of the Guards.

Then Ariv makes Llyskel’s dream a reality, and as the powerless prince surrenders to the soldier’s desire, he finds his own true strength at last. But a web of royal politics is closing around Llyskel, threatening to tear him from his lover, and it will take all his newfound courage to escape…

This may sound like a cop out and it probably is, but I have a really hard time reviewing shorts. I love reading them, though so I'm hopeful that practice will make perfect. I get caught up in the cycle of, 'the world building could've been better' or some derivation thereof followed shortly thereafter by, 'but it's a short. Don't be a pill.'

description

And on and on it goes.

I will say this little fantasy did surprise me with some kinky rope bondage and an unexpected fetish that I'll get back to shortly. The story is told from Llyskel's perspective. Llyskel is the fifth son and has been cursed with having no magical powers which may not seem like a big deal on the surface, but magical abilities are the primary means of protection. Thus, Llyskel was prevented from playing or training with his siblings because he was "helpless". Llyskel's all protected out and has taken to sneaking outside of castle grounds to paint and just be without the constant supervision of his protector, Neia. Llyskel's a sympathetic character having always being treated as fragile has taken its toll. Little does everyone know (including Llyskel) perhaps he didn't need to be treated like glass after all.

Even though I know this is a short I still think the world building could've been weightier. What are they harvesting? The harvest is mentioned multiple times, but I've no idea what they're harvesting. I know it takes place in fields but are we talking fields of barley or those fields in The Matrix? Big difference. Why do they need an armed force when they seemingly have no enemies? Why does Llyskel need constant protection within his own kingdom? Not to mention they all have magical powers which would make a military force redundant, right? I know some of these things should probably just be accepted as norms, but it would've been helpful to have them mentioned in context to flesh out this AU. Then again, maybe I'm just a picky pill.

The Fifth Son mainly focuses on Llyskel's relationship with Captain Ariv. Did I mention Llyskel's a ginger? A ginger with an… interesting kink. Naughty boy is full of surprises. Luckily for Llyskel Ariv knows just what a naughty boy needs.

Did not see that coming but boy howdy did I enjoy that surprise. What's more that wasn't even the pièce de résistance! Not telling but I did squeal a teensy lil bit. Also, there are excellent illustrations. I kind of felt like a kid reading a picture book, but the illustration of the rope bondage… yeah, I looked at that for a long time (and possibly went back and looked at it again. Allegedly.)

This author is new to me and I liked this well enough to try another offering from her. I'd happily read something else from this universe. Llyskel has several brothers and Vik from Atan piqued my interest as well. It wasn't perfect but I like her writing style. Recommend for people who enjoy high fantasy with a touch of kink.

Begrudgingly giving this 2 stars, because it was so good until it wasn’t. A Prince with no magic in a land where everyone has magic, who has a thing for a guard, and also has a thing for their magic guns, shooters, and fantasizes about being stunned by a shooter and the guard having his way with him.

Well, turns out he is immune to magic, so they resort to shibari instead. I’ve never been so disappointed with shibari making an appearance as I was with this book. So, since he is immune he gets to paint a billionth painting while babysitting his niece. And then he paints some more paintings, and then paints another one, and then gets kidnapped and then spends a couple days sleeping before escaping/being rescued in a very undramatic fashion. Why is there so much gd painting in this book? I just wanted magic stun gun sex.

This is the second work I've read by this author and I'm really liking what she has offered. This was a sweet fantasy that touched on a few different subjects without fully committing in any direction. It was like a tapas lunch, light with variety ;) There was a nicely delectable bit of shibari, which was the slow heat in the sex between Llyskel and Ariv, capped with the sharp taste of danger (even though that is technically a relative term to Llyskel) in the addition of the stunners. The setting and detail is classic fantasy, yet the themes and tone and mood were classic fairy tale. It was really perfect for me.

Llyskel can do one thing better than anything else -- paint. Though he's coveted for this gift, constantly commissioned by his family and other royal families alike, to him the gift pales in comparison to what he can't do -- wield magic. He's the only one who can't in a world where magic controls everything, doors, lights, and the everyday minutiae the rest of the population takes for granted. In light of this difference, he feels his family sees him as a weakling. He is swaddled in their protection day after day, with a permanent guard who follows his every move and in a constant struggle with his parents (the King and Queen) to battle for the right to prove himself. He wants to train for battle, something that they absolutely don't allow. But what Llyskel really wants to is simply feel as strong and needed as his brothers, all who have some occupation for the betterment of their people. Yet, Llyskel withdraws into this painting, expressing his emotions through art and hiding those secrets in his private gallery. One of those is very secret indeed. He can't stop painting the fluid motions of Captain Ariv on the practice field, always wielding a stunner.

The romance and attraction between Llyskel and Ariv works well because Ariv is really the only one who sees Llyskel and his true feelings. It is purposeful that it happens before they really know one another, because Llyskel covets the captain from afar and that puts them on the same level when Ariv finally approaches him, having done the same and recognizing the part of Llyskel that seeks submission. There is little made of the connection between Llyskel's submission and his life and relation to magic, except for in their play with the stunners (a type of stunning gun that uses a person's magic to shoot). The psychology in the characters and their desires isn't examined, but that was fine with me. It made this story less about their connection in that respect, and the gun kink and rope play exactly that, about the play. Their connection came across stronger for me in the training room, when Ariv starts teaching Llyskel before he's really supposed to learn -- recognizing that he has a need to learn what all his older brothers did and to feel that he has something to offer other than art. Of course, Ariv is shown as a rather sexy and broad, gentle yet fierce warrior, but this was the sexiest thing about him. He recognized Llyskel before anyone else saw him -- thus, the fairy tale.

This story is perfect for continuation, if the author were so inclined :) I'd love to read it if she does write it. The illustrations were beautiful. I always have trouble with books in illustration because I start seeing the story by the artists renderings and there are only a few here and there. I always want more.

I'm excited to read more from this author. I definitely recommend this one, the illustrated version if you can get it. I't is available through all of the links above, but you can definitely buy both the illustrated version and the non-illustrated version at the publisher. Recommended!

A fairy tale from beginning to end, this story about an artistically talented prince who is different from everyone else around him because he possesses no magic captured me from the first page. The whole setting enchanted me as well: secret spots in the forest, water nymphs, a wonderful castle, and a yearning need for love are the perfect background for a story designed to take me away from it all, off into a world where spells and magic are as normal as breathing.

Llyskel is the only one in his family without a clear purpose, and since he is the youngest son and seen as weak at the same time, he’s got an uphill battle ahead of him. He desperately wants to be recognized as worthwhile, not be patronized any more, but it a hard when he cannot even open any doors without magic. It takes a few dangerous situations where he has to figure out what to do for him to gain some confidence – and recognition.

Captain Ariv is a great guy and very supportive of Llyskel. I loved how he didn’t treat the prince as an invalid - even though, strictly speaking, in that society he is. Ariv also shows Llyskel what he can do – and their training together is as hot as their bedroom activities. The official courting tradition, and Ariv sticking to it, was a nice detail.

This is a gentle story, one where even the mystery that needs to be solved and the interference from some evil meddlers adds a sense of adventure without making it stressful. If you’re looking for breathtaking action and ruthless villains, this is not your book. But if you’re in the mood for a romantic fairy tale with a twist and some nice mystery thrown in, give this one a try. My guess is you will like it, just like I did.

What a fab quirky little book this was.Perhaps some would class it as fantasy but the way that Llyskel narrates it in his own sweet voice was for me reminiscent of a " Once Upon A Time " fairy-story about magical kingdoms, wicked Queens and Princes and ... well princes, because of course this is m/m and in this world there is no homophobia, people fall in love with who they want and same sex love is the norm.. They also court each other using the language of flowers and they ask permission to court their intended from the parent. Its soooo sweet! I really thought that was a lovely touch. But......what you think is something quite quaint sort of surprises you with touches of kink and some hot smexy moments that you wouldn't really expect. All whilst still maintaining the charm of a sweet fairystory. Its different and personally I like to read things that don't follow the usual formulas.

Llyskel the fifth son of the king is one of those characters who you can't help but love and root for because he's the odd one out, he has no magic like the rest of the people of his world so his mother and father worry about his safety but at the same time he's no pushover and he knows exactly what and who he wants and bless him he goes out to get his man who happens to be the tall dark and sexy ..Captain Ariv of The Kings Guard and his long time fantasy and crush.

There's a lot more to Llyskel than meets the eye and when the two of them get together we learn that he isn't as innocent as he seems! Then later on in the story when things go a bit pear shaped he surprises everyone with his fortitude.

Endearing, different and very enjoyable. Thank you Blaine. I'm keeping!

Since the blurb really described the book quite well, I’ve decided not to rehash it. The Fifth Son is an addictive, sweet and sexy book from start to finish. I loved all of the characters in this book and was immediately captivated by the story the main hero, Llyskel told. Since the book is told in first person, with his point of view, I really enjoyed his charming personality. He’s an interesting and complex character and experiencing the world through his eyes was a pleasure indeed.

Llyskel is an amazing artist and somewhat of a daydreamer. He’s easy to love and I thought Ariv, who is a masculine, honorable man was a perfect match for him. I truly enjoyed every minute they spent together in this book, and found myself craving more when the story ended. There are several interesting twists and turns throughout the story that kept it moving along quite smoothly and the book itself is a very fast paced read. I can’t help but hope that Blaine Arden will write more about these characters because I enjoyed reading them very much. This is new author for me, and I’m anxiously looking forward to reading more written by Blaine and look forward to reading more! If you enjoy a really good fantasy piece, The Fifth Son is definitely a book that I highly recommend.

Overall
For some reason I had a difficult time sitting down to review this story. I enjoyed the writing, the characters, the world, and the relationship, but I still felt as if something were missing--or perhaps there was too much of something else. Still, the main characters' dynamic is appealing, despite having some difficulties coming to an understanding Llyskel's shooter kink (even being able to make the connection between it and gun kink). A good fantasy setting with interesting (although I'd like more development) characters, I'd recommend this easy read for a nice day on the beach.

Strengths
One of this story's strengths was the subtle world building. In many regards it follows a standard fantasy world construction, but there are enough nuances to add a special flare, and it was those touches that made it particularly strong to me. The description of a child's coming to power, the role of kings and queens, the weapon that focuses a user's magic, the use of magic in every day life and how it disrupts Llyskel's world and inhibits most things he does. In a short span the multitude of these minor elements all added up to paint world picture.

In addition to this, the descriptions used throughout the writing brought the story to life. The narrator is an artist and rightly gives beautiful (sexy) descriptions of the things he sees: flowers, men, fights, gardens, etc. It was gorgeous and sexy and one of my favorite things about this story!

As I mentioned before, I had some difficulties understanding Llyskel's thing for shooters, but I did enjoy how it propelled certain knowledge to come out and how Llyskel and Ariv deal with the obstacle. Their second bedroom scene is very nice. It helps that Llyskel gives vivid details about Ariv's appearances and the description of their night together is wonderfully sensual. I enjoyed my time with them ;)

Weaknesses
While I enjoyed the climactic action and resolution, the ordeal felt somewhat forced--or at least it didn't flow with the rest of the story. Logically it made sense and wasn't abrupt, but something about it felt off to me, as if the story itself were a fantasy romance with a plot tagged on. I was perfectly happy with Llyskel and Ariv exploring their relationship and the needs in that relationship, but I may be unique in that.

Llyskel likes to paint and he does it in abundance, since he has no other duties as a fifth son and prince in his family. His life is even more dull because he is magic less in a world filled with magic. He is doted on by his parents, and protected like a newborn because he has no way to protect himself. So Llyskel spends his time painting, and watching his brothers and soldiers train. There is that odd time when he gets to spend a little time by himself but it takes a bit of scheming and hoping he isn’t caught by his brothers or guards. In that solitude, Llyskel can think about Ariv, the man who turns him on like no other.

Ariv is a Captain of his father’s army, and he alone knows the desire that lies with Llyskel's heart. Together the men discover an explosive passion, and it sets the course for life changing events for Llyskel. There is more that meets the eye when it comes to the fifth son, and he will discover his confidence and uniqueness in the arms of the man he so longed desired.

What a surprising short this one turned out to be. It brought the sexy, a little action, and romance. That one hell of a combination and with the magic it was just down right entertaining. I really enjoyed Llyskel, he embodied youth with the right amount naiveté and maturity. Love him and Ariv together they were so hot and did some surprising things in the bedroom 'you naughty boys'. There is a bit of drama and enough characterization to keep the reader engaged and helps with keeping the story from falling flat. Taking Llyskel out of his comfort, and offers him the chance to blossom on his own.

Overall, I really liked it and I am surprised. Blaine is really good at creating a fantasy world and interesting unforgettable characters. I am peeved it wasn’t longer, but that seems to happen to all the good books. They are never enough, but I believe my pants are quite thankful.

This is one of those stories I really wanted to love, but just couldn't quite get into. Don't get me wrong, The Fifth Son is not a bad read by any means, it just lacked that something special to really find its way into my heart.

I think part of what distanced me from the story is the fact that we're kind of bashed over the head with the fact that Llyskel is an outcast. He doesn't fit in with his royal brothers. He doesn't have a role to play in court. He's an arist in a warrior's world. He lacks the magic that is so common-place to those around him. With all that emotional baggage put before you, the fact that he's gay is almost an anti-climactic.

Having said that, I absolutely loved the character Llyskel. He's a complex, well-developed character, with a colourful style of narration that sounds very much like one of his paintings (if you know what I mean). Young, innocent, and adorably romantic, he's also a young man with some very secret fantasies. My problem with the story is that while Captain Ariv is a likeable enough character, he just doesn't match my idea of the man who can fulfill those secret fantasies. There's something lacking in his personality to make him worthy of the royal lad I loved so much.

It is a wonderfully well-written story, and for readers who don't share my reservations about Captain Ariv, it's certainly a great read. For me, though, it remains a good one, and a lovely one, but a few ounces of testosterone on Ariv's part shy of a great one.

It was a very strange story...
Somethink like a mediaeval setting with sci-fi/fantasy elements (the weapon for example?).
The plot was strange too, I did't see the point of the whole "twist"...
I liked the MCs though, especially the strong, brave Captain Ariv ;)
Prince Llyskel's problem (his abilities or rather the lack of them) was somewhat stilted for me, but he was a likeable character.

However, the rope play bondage scene was exquisite!!! And even better with the picture (there are a few drawings in the book)!!! ;)

Prince Llyskel is the artistic fifth son who has no magic and has had his eye on the handsome Captain Ariv. Always feeling less than since he can't command magic, Ariv finds something even cooler about Llyskel, he's a null and magic doesn't affect him.

This is a quickie with some rope bondage thrown in and some arty pictures. Nice, uncomplicated afternoon read.

Original Blog Post: Happy Happy Release Day! eARC Review & #Free eBook #Giveaway: The Fifth Son by Blaine Arden where you can meet Llyskel

We would like to thank author Blaine Ardenfor donating an ebook copy of The Fifth Son, to 1 lucky commentator who gets chosen. Make sure to leave a comment in the link to get a free ebook copy of The Fifth Son.

I love fantasy and it is really nice to stumble upon one that is light enough to read within two hours and still end with a nice smile on my face. I really smiled HUGE! after reading The Fifth Son. This is almost like a fairy tale complete with prince meets the man of his dreams and wicked characters who swoop in and make a solidly comfortable story into a suspenseful one.

We enter a world where magic is the norm and those who do not have magic are looked upon with pity and protected at all costs. Prince Llyskel is the fifth son of a powerful king and he was born without magic. As everything around him is magical, even the doors and windows, it was feared that this little prince would fall to harm. The king and queen order that when it comes to their youngest, all must be very careful.

As the little prince grows up, he took things for granted but also was frustrated to no end. His lack of magical abilities made it impossible for him to play with his brothers. He has to go around with a bodyguard at all hours. He has to practice his defensive arts alone. In short: he grew up lonely. He has one consolation: his art. And with that art comes the dreams.

As Llyskel grew to be a young man, the natural course of events of all young men are experiences he never encountered but it did not stop him from feeling them. One such man who made these feelings impossible to ignore was Ariv, the Captain of the Guards. This is the one man Llyskel dreamed of but could never have. Well, not until that fateful day when Ariv assists him and then the game changed. For both.

Ariv is a warrior and he was groomed and trained to protect. His magical abilities were strong enough to get him to the rank he now enjoyed. Falling in love with a prince is not an easy thing. Especially after he discovers that Llyskel is not at all as he seems.

For those of you who enjoy fairy tales like I do, this is the perfect read to either take to bed or just relax with a cup of tea.

Llyskel is a prince who can't use magic in a world where everyone has some semblance of magical power. Considered defenseless and weak, he is guarded wherever he goes and has little freedom, except when he paints. He also harbors a secret desire, something which the knight captain Ariv senses in him and seeks to satisfy.

The Fifth Son was sweet and spicy, a lovely little romance set in a fully-realized fantasy world where magic is so commonplace it is even used to open doors and windows. Llyskel often finds himself feeling like a prisoner, since he's not allowed out on his own. He spends most of his time within the castle walls and training grounds painting pictures of friends and family, his only escape from it all.

One day Ariv triggers Llyskel's most secret fantasy, and they both find themselves inexorably bound together by it. This begins a courtship that's as hot as it is sweet, peppered with light bondage scenes and loving kisses. Under Ariv's touch, Llyskel learns that he's not as powerless as he thought.

I really liked how Llyskel grew as a character. By the time the conflict part of the story came around, he had grown confident enough to tackle his captivity without waiting around like a damsel to be rescued. His relationship with Ariv really seemed to bring him out of his shell, and the two worked well together as a partnership of equals despite Llyskel's handicap.

The courtship rituals were very sweet and I found myself getting the warm fuzzies at Ariv's proposal to court, as well as Llyskel's response. I liked that in this world m/m relationships, poly and even open relationships were not only acceptable, but the norm. It was a refreshing change to the usual discrimination, prejudice and forbidden love and made for a lovely read. The Fifth Son felt like a warm ray of afternoon sunshine and left me feeling positive about Llyskel and Ariv's future together. A most enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed this very much, but I was disappointed that it seemed to end so abruptly. The characters were very interesting. I wish there had been a little more to flesh them out. I admit that by the end I didn't really understand what a "shooter" was. I still recommend it as a very pleasant fantasy.

In a world where magic is commonplace, Prince Llyskel has none, that's why he longs to feel it against his skin. But when his beloved Captain Ariv tries to use magic against him, Llyskel discovers that his power is that he's immune to magic, which is going to help him to get rid of a very dangerous situation…
This is a nice story, quite short, but enjoyable anyway. I wish it was longer, I have the impression the world and the characters could be exploited to the full, and it would result into a very entertaining story.
I loved the illustrations. Really beautiful.

A very nice and entertaining short story. The flow was mostly good but I kind of felt like the story got bogged down during the whole Atan sequence as Llyskel described in nauseating detail what he was seeing and doing. I actually think that whole episode made little sense and didn’t enhance the story in any way. Did the queen really think her plan would succeed? I would have also liked to get a better feel for the ages of the characters. From the narrative, I’m guessing that Llyskel was perhaps around 20. But how much older than him was Ariv?

2.5 stars. A nice short with some interesting world building, a sweet romance, and unfortunately a lot of missed potential, particularly when it comes to the main character's kink. Making it impossible for him to indulge in it the way he wanted was a bit of a disappointment, as was making the alternative something as "mundane" as bondage. Not erotic enough to be good erotica, not romantic enough to be a good romance, and not eventful enough to be a good adventure short. It does an okay enough job at all three, but fails to excel at any of them.

It's about a magical land where Prince Llyskel don't have any magic. And everyone believes he is a weakling. He is though , smitten with Captain Ariv of the Guards.
So, mainly the plot is full of magic, action but also a lot of sexy times (book is ADULT mm romance in a fantasy setting ).
I loved the book and the cute hot romance story . Written beautifully, I fell in love with the world author showed us.
I wish it was longer though 👀🤭

It started off with an interesting premise. Youngest son can't do magic while everybody else can and subsequently has to be protected because of that. However, instead of being protected he was being smothered and when they found out that SPOILER he is immune to magic, it just all went downhill for me. Not a book I will be reading again.

This book sounded so good and like it would be right up my alley but there was absolutely no relationship development at all and Llyskel and Ariv never have a real conversation on page, but the last straw was when pale, powerless Llyskel was abducted by the neighbouring country of brown-skinned people for an arranged marriage to an underage bride. None of that is a neutral artistic choice.

3.5 stars

This had potential, but ended up being a little short. It really lacked depth and the world building was essentially non-existent. Still, if you're looking for a quick read, this isn't too bad.

zero to 100

I didn’t find the build up to the sex scenes believable and I think we needed at least 100 more pages to get into the “magic doesn’t affect the Mc”thing

Just too much happening in not enough pages

Short story. Romantic and kinky. Second shibari scene faded to black. Sketchy world building. Pacing issues with rough patches.

Llyskel lives in a world where magic is everywhere, but unlike everybody else, he has no magical powers. As the fifth son of the king, Llyskel is sheltered and protected, unable to serve in the military or go out unguarded, his family worrying that he is unable to protect himself in the face of others with magical abilities. Although Llyskel's passions lie in his artwork, part of him still chafes at the restrictions he faces and wishes for more independence and freedom.

Along with his passion for art, Llyskel's other love is the handsome Captain Ariv of his father's army. Llyskel is thrilled when the handsome man returns his interest. Ariv alone seems to understand Llyskel's secret sexual need and is able to satisfy him perfectly.

Although Llyskel has no magical abilities, he one day realizes that he is not without power. His first clue is when Ariv is unable to immobilize him with a magical stunner. Soon Llyskel's world opens up, as he is finally able to train in combat like others his age and he's given more independence. And through his training he realizes he is a stronger fighter than he knew. But when a queen from a neighboring land begins to express interest in Llyskel, he learns that he may be in more danger than he realized.

I really loved this story and was caught up in Llyskel's world. Arden does a wonderful job of letting us see things through his artist's eyes, and the colors and light and images are all so beautifully explained. The world of magic the story creates is richly detailed, but not overwhelming in its world building for such a short book. I could really understand Llyskel's pain at being the lone person without power in a world where magic is everywhere. Especially since as a member of the royal family, everyone knows about his lack of magic and it is a source of embarrassment, not to mention placing great restrictions on his activities.

I also really liked Llyskel and Ariv together. They had a great combination of a sweet, traditional courtship, combined with hot (and kinky) sex. Ariv alone understands what Llyskel really wants and is able to provide it. My only quibble with this part is that until we first see them having sex, I found myself confused about what the deal was with the stunner and I felt like I needed a bit more information to totally follow the early parts of the story. However, I loved the way it all comes together and the perfect way the men's sexual interests align.

As the book continues, we move into more action and suspense as Llyskel faces threats from the neighboring country. It was quite exciting and fast paced and Arden does a great job moving from the romance to the action. I really appreciated that we see Llyskel as able to help himself and not totally dependent on rescue. Although he is at a disadvantage without magic, he manages to use the power that he does have to help himself get out of trouble. I would have liked to see the resolution to this rounded out a bit more though. I felt the plot was wrapped up with the bad guys a bit too quickly and neatly, but I did really enjoy this section.

Overall I thought The Fifth Son was a great story. It had a wonderful combination of sweet romance, hot sex, and exciting action. I would definitely recommend it.

A romantic fantasy with the touch of a fairy tale.

In all his life, Prince Llyskel has been sheltered by his parents and the guards of the palace due to his lack of magic. He has no way to protect himself and so his parents insist on guards accompanying him on every outing, even if he was just going to the river to paint.

He is not allowed to train with other warriors, in case they accidentally use magic on him, and so Llyskel has to content himself fighting with practice dummies, which bear no relation to the real thing and he fears how helpless he'd be in a real fight.

Painting is one of Prince Llyskel's pleasures, and one where magic is not required. But he has another, darker secret that he hasn't shared with anyone. Considered helpless due to his lack of magical abilities, Llyskel actually wants to be rendered completely helpless, by none other than Captain Ariv.

Llyskel has a crush on the captain and often daydreams about what it might be like to be taken in hand by the powerful warrior. But Llyskel fears that it will stay a dream, for what would the handsome captain want with someone so useless? Who can't even open a magical door, never mind anything else where magic was required. Magic is used everywhere in the palace, from the lights to the doors and Llyskel is reliant on others all the time.

But since this is a romance, the readers know that Captain Ariv is not as uninterested as he first appears. Add in a dash of court intrigue and a plot to abduct the prince and you have the makings of a very engaging tale.

This is a feel-good romance, very reminiscent of a fairy tale. At one stage, Prince Llyskel is even abducted and kept in a tower. Both Llyskel and Ariv were well-drawn, wonderful characters. The book is from Llyskel's point of view and you see his frustrations at the limitations of his life, and you can see why he would want to sneak off without his guards now and then.

We see Captain Ariv through Llyskel's eyes and he comes across as a strong man and a noble one. He would do everything in his power to keep Llyskel safe, but he doesn't confine him and he doesn't treat Llyskel's lack of magic as a disability.

The love scenes between them were hot and tender. Llyskel is captivated by the magical weapons called shooters that cast stunning spells, and he wants to feel that helpless and vulnerable. But since he has no magic of his own, the spell doesn't work on him. Ariv improvises and uses ropes to bind Prince Llyskel instead and the heat between them during that scene sizzles off the page.

I have a bit of a niggle with the world building; there isn't enough of it. Just enough to give you a taste of this magical land, but not enough to satisfy. Mind you, the usual fantasy books I read are thick door stoppers, not novellas. It is a complete tale, and we do get all of Ariv's and Llyskel's love story. I adored both of them.

If you're looking for a romance with a touch of magic and some court intrigue thrown in, this might be the one for you.
