One of Liebe’s former employees has returned and her relationships both past and present cause a lot of turmoil in the group. But it’s when we’re the most honest with ourselves that we become the most vulnerable, and that means the real danger is still to come…

Nene runs away with this volume, as our current chef reflects on her time in the salon when she and Sumika first started out and her own sexuality, which is one of the better portrayals of actual lesbianism rather than straight-up yuri that I’ve seen in a bit.

With her motivation to find somebody, this unfortunately blurs fantasy and reality as the salon pushes her and Sumika ever closer. Which is agony for Nene, who has had her heart broken so many times over by straight people that she can’t see herself past it.

Sumika, meanwhile, knows other people far better than herself and when the vivacious Goeido shows up as the third employee (wheel), Nene ends up falling for her charms incredibly hard, more from proximity than desire.

What follows is some of the most brutal emotional manipulation I’ve seen in a while as Goeido is an absolute predator that Nene is utterly helpless to resist, even when she knows damn well she should. Mistakes are made and then made again.

It’s absolutely brilliant stuff - any book that has me yelling at the page for somebody not to be doing something is off and running and, trust me, people choose the wrong path far more often than not this time around.

Elsewhere, Sumika has cut Nanako off from talking about her obsession with Hime. Which doesn’t help when Nanako is slowly being driven crazy by Hime and Yano’s friendship. Nanako assumes love is in the air, even as Hime makes no real overtures, and she can’t handle it.

More to the point, Hime seems to be very clueless about Nanako’s own sexuality and feelings, leaving the latter completely adrift. In a smart way, this volume begins with Nene, ends with Nanako, but completely hinges on Sumika the whole way through.

But Sumika refuses to let Nanako have her outlet any more because it isn’t healthy for either of them and Sumika has, with good reason, learned to completely despise romance at all (the flashback does explain a lot). Sumika is very much the Cassandra archetype - she knows exactly what is going on and absolutely nobody will listen to her.

And that stalls out the wonderfully slow building romance that I have been here for for quite some time now. And, yeah, I would love to see somebody in this story happy and I think Sumika and Nanako are a great pairing. However…

…we can’t leave this without talking about the ending of the story, which looks like everything is about to be sunshine and lilies and everything one could have hoped. Except it didn’t feel right even as it was happening and the way the art was selling it felt off.

And, whether this was a deliberate artistic choice or not, that turns out to be the case as the last page of the regular story threatens to rip the heart clear out of one character (and maybe an overly involved reader or two). It felt off in the moment and wrong for Nanako’s character and we’ll see where it goes. This is not a series that shies away from big drama and there are two interpretations here and, in this instance, I think the worst one (but juicier narratively) is the way we’re headed.

Okay, I loved this volume. I genuinely think that having the Hime and Yoko stuff as an instigating element for other plots has actually made this story way better. We saw their story, they have a friendship forged (to the dismay of some), it’s achieved a balance for now.

Instead we get to see the lives of these side characters and everybody is written so, so well. I don’t give the writing in this book enough credit, but, maybe minus the manager, everybody here is so fleshed out and interesting to follow. It’s a strong cast that the mangaka is making excellent use of.

5 stars - this is a great volume of a great series and it’s excellent plus it has yuri in it, rather than being simply an excellent yuri book. The more exploration it has done of its characters the better it has gotten and it’s wonderfully written, if emotionally wrenching at times.

what was that?

Why did Kanoko finally approach Tachibana in that way? Is that Goeido working behind the scenes because she is obviously obsessed with Tachibana and either she likes her or she hates her and wants to hurt her? Because this is so out of character for Kanoko. And if this is Kanoko, then I really do dislike her. She is my least favorite character. And if anyone should get Tachibana, it should be Nene who liked her from the start.

We didn’t see much of Hime outside of making it painful for Kanoko to see her with Yano. Yano and her jealousy is taking center stage and is on the verge of having to confront Hime with her true feelings. This would make it easy for Goeido to slip in and persuade and manipulate Kanoko. If you remember, Kanoko never gave Goeido’s card to Tachibana. Now that Nene knows that none of it was real and she was being used to get at Tachibana, she is able to see her true crush was on Tachibana the whole time.

Tachibana is straight, until she isn’t. She has been prime to embracing the spectrum. Too bad Nene never knew this. All she had to do was continue with the friendship and then watch it evolve.

KANOKO, VAFFANCULO A TE E A QUELL'ALTRA STRONZA

lets just put that Kanoko/Sumika plot on the backburner real quick and introduce a new character! A former cafe cast member student dropping in for a visit

What follows is some top-tier soap opera flashbacks drama of stealing crushes & does it even count if the other didn't even know about that one-sided love forming
Also clearly someone here forgot to tell reality apart from fantasy of their Salon and got pulled in hard

Nene coming up as one of the main characters is <3 so dope to see. I love that she is actually a "true" lesbian in the sense that she is very rarely conflicted with her feelings of love, rather, she seeks happiness and love at the end of the day. It was sad to see what she had to go through, but it was great all the same.
