Blazing Ashes: A Phoenix Reborn Urban Fantasy Novel

Rate this book
She thought the pain was normal...

My name is Katya... and I'm not crazy. Sounds kind of funny that I start the story that way, right? Trust me, it's anything but. It all started when I got these bloody migraines and began hearing voices. I was pretty sure I'd lost it.

And then the voices turn out to be two hot-as-hell guardians, here to guide me on my quest to purge the world of evil. Because apparently, that’s what I was born to do. The kicker? They're not human.

They've stood guard since she was small, and have come to teach her otherwise...

I guess it's just as well I'm willing to play into their delusional game. Until, of course, I find out it's no delusion at all. The monsters do exist, and I'm one of them. So is my mate. And my two new buddies? Well, that's debatable.

Soon everything spins out of control and the phoenix in me rises to the surface, unbidden, unchallenged... And un-allied with either Light or Darkness.

Now the world depends on her choice... And what if she chooses wrong?

Like I said, I'm not crazy. But read if you dare, and you can judge for yourself.

Alexa Whitewolf is a fiction writer, newspaper columnist of daily issues and author of the critically acclaimed Moonlight Rogues shifter series.

Alexa has been a lifelong writer and first began creating other worlds and characters at the ripe age of 12. Growing up in the Transylvania region surrounded by epic mountains and a never ending stream of legends and stories was bound to create an overactive imagination. This shines through Ms. Whitewolf’s writing by creating worlds filled with unique folklore, life wisdom and plenty of furry creatures.

An avid traveler, Alexa writes under a penname and spends her days between an office job and writing, in Canada’s capital when she’s not flying somewhere with lush landscapes and plenty of hiking trails.

Her series focus on strong heroines, kind yet sexy men, fights of good and evil and the never-ending learning curve of humanity’s strong – and weak – points. Romanian folklore is intertwined with her writing, more notably in her shifter romance series, the Moonlight Rogues. Her other series draw on world mythology, such as the Avalon myth and Arthurian legend (the Avalon Chronicles) and Ancient Egypt (The Sage’s Legacy).

You can follow her blog at www.alexawhitewolf.com/blog or on social media. Her column in Observatorul also tackles various issues, including health, technology, and a writer’s life.

Katya has a choice to make, pick one or the other, the Light or the Dark, should be reasonably simple, except she has a 50/50 chance of destroying the world. Yes, Alexa Whitewolf is back and yes, she has penned another fantasy tale that has her heroine’s back to the wall, her toes in the fire and her heart in knots. BLAZING ASHES has everything, including a completely lovable heroine, an imaginary friend who comes to life and could just be Katya’s heart’s destiny and two guardians who are the embodiment of otherworldly.

Fun, fast-paced and filled with just enough inner turmoil for Katya to keep us caught up in her story. She has discovered just why she is so special and rare and important to the world. But did she really need to have the weight and the fate of the world on her shoulders?

Attitude and innocence, danger, monsters and a test, is Katya ready for happening to her? Has she lost her mind or has everything in her life been leading to the new not-so-normal that she was destined for? What if she chooses wrong? What if right for the world is wrong for her?

A fabulous fantasy tale from an author who knows how to take us out of our reality into a realm that lurks in the shadows without getting too heavily dramatic, hey, it’s just the fate of the world hanging in the balance, right?

Loved this one!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Alex Whitewolf! This is my honest and voluntary review.

I’m a big Alexa Whitewolf fan and am always eager to dive into her next release. I know I’m in for a good time, with a story that hooks me throughout, and Blazing Ashes was no different.

Before I go into detail with this one, I just want to note that I was lucky enough to beta read this one. As great as it was to see the book develop, this has not influenced my rating. My rating is based upon the final product.

With Blazing Ashes, we have a standalone that works as a prequel to Alexa Whitewolf’s Demoni Sancti series. In fact, this one will have you extremely eager to see what the world brings. Sure, you do not have the specifics of what is to come, but the world building and details given in this one will have you extremely eager to see what comes next.

In fact, the world building was my favourite thing with this one. Alexa Whitewolf’s world building is always wonderful, introducing and including so many different elements, and this one is no different. We’re pulled deep into a world that has so many elements, and each will suck you in deep.

It’s not just the world building that is great, though. The characters and story will also hook. Although the story doesn’t quite play out the way the norm has you expecting, it’s still a wonderful read. I won’t say more on that – it’s a great surprise to be given something different – just know you do not get what you probably expect.

All in all, Blazing Ashes was another winner from Alexa Whitewolf and I cannot wait to dive into the Demoni Sancti series for more of the world we were introduced to here.

Katya is an interesting and unapologetic character with a supporting cast who are equal parts fun, funny, and inspiring. We understand her approach and her opinions and what leads her to make the decisions that she does.

In this thought-provoking book, Alexa raises some moral questions few authors cover with as much detail or sensitivity. In our current world, its moral dilemmas are more timely than ever.

Once you open the gate, there is no coming back

“Blazing Ashes” by Alexa Whitewolf is a hell-ride start to finish 😉. A fast-paced, action-packed, entertaining, witty and highly enjoyable standalone full-length novel that blends fantasy, mythology, demons, angels into a fully original smooth tale that keeps the reader turning the pages until the very satisfactory end.

Katya (FMC) is fully unapologetic, she has struggling through life, for as long she can remember. As her boyfriend cheats on her and she gets blamed and fired by her boss in the process, is the last straw, she cannot take it anymore, which brings Dante and Daymun into her case. Katya finds out that she is indeed a phoenix, destined to make a decision of enormous proportions, but before that, she would have to complete three challenges to come into her fully powers, and once she completes them, the fate of humanity will be on her hands by opening the gates to Hell or Heaven.

Katya personality is addictive, the plot twisted and original with lots of unexpected turns and an underlining serious thematic about power, retaliation and justice, all of them wrapped out into a fantastic, well-written and delightful story.

I usually shy away from 'romance' but Alexa has managed to incorporate it into this story so that it doesn't detract from the storyline.

Katya has had it hard all of her life, the final straw being her boyfriend cheating on her and instead of him being fired when she brought it to the attention of their boss, it was Katya who was not only fired but blacklisted as well. She was at her wits end and in excrutiating pain from blinding headaches when Dante and Daymun made themselves known to her.

Blazing Ashes is the story of a young woman who suddenlt finds herself having to choose whether there is enough good in Mankind to save it or if the corruption runs so deep that it is time for a purge.

Will Katya choose to open the Gates of Heaven or will she choose the Gates of Hell? Happy reading. Annemarie

A choice between Heaven and Hell. Katya has lived a painful, lonely life. Growing up in foster homes with no love, being beaten by other kids, and as an adult living from hand to mouth, always poor. And then she starts experiencing terrible migraines and only being given a limited amount of medicine to stop them. But one time she takes them and a demon and an angel appear and tell her she is the new phoenix and must complete three challenges and then she has to make a decision. To open the gate to Hell and and release a curse upon mortals to wipe them out and re-new the Earth or to open the gate to Heaven and cleanse the Earth. But after seeing mostly the worst of humanity how can Katya choose? And then she finds out the hero who appeared in her dreams for years is real and might just be her mate. I liked this story that was a mix of the paranormal with a touch of a fairy tale. All the characters were a blast, and Katya was a hoot with her personality. I loved how she yells at the guys in the book, but they do deserve it. It basically was a story with a quest and a decision to be made. But the story itself was fun and hard to put down. Information is slowly released in a way to keep you reading. Well written and easy to follow I really enjoyed it and kept reading to see how it would end and what Katya would do about the boys.

Katja has been on her own her whole fighting for survival everyday. No one has had her back and she's fought through migraines since she was a child. Her best friend is in her head. He's all she's had to turn to. Is she mentally ill? Now she's seeing angels and demons. This would break a weaker person. Is she facing them for real or are they hallucinations caused from the medicine for the migraines. You have to read the book. It's a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows with plenty of twists and turns. Action packed storyline that keeps you from putting the book down. I can't wait to see how this series will grow. A must read.

Katya, a girl living a life without glamor. A supernatural without knowing it. Life has not been kind and she is tasked with the fate of the world. An angel and a demon on her shoulder, a fogment of her imagination comes to life. Thrown into the deep end, she learns to navigate her new found powers. With so much hate in the world, she still sees the good. However will the silver lining be enough to overshadow all the wrongs in life? Would you choose to save the world or damn it if all you have known was pain? The story is well written with drool worthy characters. Can't wait for the next read as this kept me glued to the end of my seat. I am team horns, are you team wings? 5 stars.

sooooo confused. I was willing to push through, figuring everything would start making sense as the story progressed, but then one of the guardians said it was a flama that took out the dinosaurs when they were murdered to stop them from fulfilling their duty. Who would have been around to do that? An angel, a demon? A T-Rex? And why would the balance need to be reset at that point in earth’s history?
Everything was just… odd. And confusing. And apparently this book isn’t for me.

Interesting premise but can be a little hard to get emotionally invested in
The writing is good and flows quite well
I found some of the religious undertones a bit “not my cup of tea” and the lack of choice in some parts a little disheartening but over all I liked it and would recommend

That was so intense, I couldn't look away from the book! :)

Katya didn't have the easiest life so far and it's not getting any better any time soon. :) She suffered from horrible migraines, that are taking over her life. On top of that, she starts hearing stuff. When she is sure she is going crazy, it turns out that the real story is even crazier. The voices are her guardians, one from heaven, one from hell, that are supposed to guide her through her trials.

She is not human., She is one of a kind, one born every 500 years and has immense power. But she has a choice to make.

Her best friend is a guy she meets in her dreams every night since she was little. And now he is there in flesh and blood, but he doesn't make things all that easier. :)

One of those books that you can't put doesn't till the end. There is non stop action, suspense, a romance that kept me on the edge of the seat. And the characters just jump from the pages... :)

I highly recommend to anyone who loves urban fantasy.
