Nykara is the first novel in a thrilling young adult fantasy series.
For sixteen-year-old Alix, life was simple in her small town. However, that all changed the moment a mysterious boy moves into her town. Alix begins to discover strange occurrences all around her. Only, she quickly learns the magic she once believed to be fiction, may be more real than she ever could have imagined.
Katie Holland is an author of YA and Romance novels. If she's not writing you can probably find her reading. She signed with Kingston Publishing in 2018, which fulfilled a lifelong dream of hers. Popcorn, chocolate and gummy candy keep her going while writing, reading and pretty much doing anything else. She loves baking, taking pictures and seeing new places. I really wanted to love this story. I am a big fan of the average girl finds out she is exceptional trope. While I did enjoy what we learned about the characters and the positive healthy relationships, I was unable to fully connect. They never quite felt like real people to me.
I had read several reviews prior to reading where the sentiment seemed to be that the book had a slow start but turned around later in the book. I somewhat agree with this. I want a bit of the minutiae of the day to day of the protagonist to help build them and solidify characterization but this book had too much of the mundane. Additionally, there was so much repetition of thoughts and feelings, it started to annoy me. Also, the climax felt like it was very low stakes. I never got anxious or worried that the characters were in any real danger.
I did very much enjoy the premise and the authors creativity.
Based on other reviews this seems to be a me thing. I think those who enjoy YA paranormal may like this more than I did.
I love this book! What a fun young adult supernatural series starter. Alex thinks she is just a regular teenage girl. Then a new family moves in close to her and her life turns upside down. She becomes friends with Ben and maybe there are feelings of more there. She has always thought her 17th birthday was important but never knew why. Well now a whole new world is open before her. And she is learning how special she truly is. Family and town secrets revealed. Also there are missing hikers and only she can save them. I loved this action packed supernatural story. And the way it ended left me so excited for more. This narrator was the perfect voice for Alex. I can't suggest this enough to all supernatural fans, young and older. I may have found my new favorite series.
Alix was a normal teen till she meets the new teen in her sleepy town. Things begin to change for Alix and her best friend Shay as she finds out that her entire life was about to become Magical.
An amazingly well written book though it took me a while to get into the story. I almost gave up in the beginning, but hanging on there was definitely worth it.
Loved the way the characters and plot develops.
Eagerly waiting for the next book in the series.

Author did a great job leading you up to the moment of Alix finding out who she really is. I would love to write more but I don't want to give it away! As always Katie did a great job. On to book two!!!
I am absolutely in love with this book. One of those books I just couldn’t put down! Haven’t looked forward for the next book like this since Harry Potter or was this into a book since Outlander!
It took me a long time to get into this book. I just wasn't pulled in immediately. I pushed through the beginning and it was so worth it. The characters were interesting (Shay is by far my favorite!) And the concepts of other beings is intriguing. The storyline has left me with tons of questions and I am so glad there are more books that will hopefully answer them. The main reason I had a hard time getting into the book was a simple error that for me was almost a deal breaker: the University of Montana is not in Bozeman. Montana State University is in Bozeman. For most people, this isn't a problem, but I went to MSU and have on many occasions said FTG, so I actually quit reading for two days to get over this. Ridiculous, but it was really hard for me to continue when the author didn't get the facts straight.
What an amazing start to a series. This is the first book I have read by Katie Holland and it will not be the last. The story is captivating and keeps you reading to see what happens. It has a strong Heroine with relatable characters. It is fabulously written and a very enjoyable read
