Going Nowhere #1

A Bridge to Nowhereland

Rate this book
I worked hard, everything I planned almost within my grasp, and then one flicker in time, mere seconds, and it’s all gone. Now I’m starting at zero, stuck in a place called the outpost, which is neither here nor there but some limbo land for those who haven’t transitioned.

I’m sleeping in a broom closet, choking on fumes, while everyone declares me useless. Kaden, the guy that runs this place, keeps telling me there’s nothing I can do to go back. That once the change is set in motion, it’s impossible to reverse.

Every day, each step, takes me farther away from where I want to be and closer to Kaden and a mysterious land of darkness. The only way out of this mess is forward, away from the life I built, and the people I love…

A Bridge to Nowhereland by Donna Augustine
Going Nowhere series #1. Urban fantasy. Possible romance later in the series. Cliffhanger.
Billie’s Gram tells her that she’ll be gone soon. Billie knows you can’t predict the day you are going to die, so basically says “ok Gram” and runs off to work after a warning from Gram to “tell them you have a reservation”, whatever that means. As Billie runs over a bridge, her life changes and she’s trapped in an outpost between Topside and Nowhere. Whatever that means. Billie is told she’s a tinker and get used to this new existence.

Not a lot of world building here yet. It’s a magic world since they can obviously change the outcome of events plus there is a good and bad side of the world. The heroine is full of snark and defiance and also, possibly, attracted to her new boss, Kaden. So far, he is mostly mad at her but also protective. There is a spark here. And why is purple the best? It’s certainly one of my favorite colors, but we don’t know the background in this new world yet.
I’m interested enough to put the next one on my tbr.

Disappointing

Le sigh. I'm torn on this book. Admittedly, I know what I am getting into when I read this author but also I am disappointed. The worlds are always interesting, the magic systems different, and the general sense of discovery is enjoyable. The plot and characters, however, are on repeat. There's always a FMC who is a little off beat who appears to be nothing and suddenly is super special. She's always instantly attracted to the MMC, disguises it with snark, and ultimately tumbles into bed with him and is embarrassed and regretful. The MMC is always a supposed alpha male which real means a controlling ahole who can't be bothered to explain anything and derides the FMC for knowing nothing about things she's never been exposed to. Also, he always has a paramour who is clingy, bischy, and immediately hates the FMC. The plot usually involves the FMC being introduced to a world that the MMC has a lot of power in. He traps her, lies to and bullies her, and she gives in because she doesn't have much of a backbone. She ends up in trouble, he rescues, they fight. Repeat a few times until a big bad is revealed, she gets she's apparently helpless without his "protection" and she accepts her imprisonment-excuse me, safe and contained environment-like a good little girl under the guise of being strategic.

I feel like this kind of story is becoming increasingly tonally deaf. The female as fiery and stubborn and emotional against the male as calm and controlled. The paternal, controlling male authority dictating the female's world, actions, behaviors as if she were a child. The male keeping the female deliberately ignorant, vilifying her for that ignorance, and forcing her to be dependent on him to be safe where safety technically means in a situation where he has all the control and takes advantage of her. The woman, fighting against this, is thus "defying" the male as if has parental like authority over her. Frankly, its a toxic situation and message.

For once, I'd like FMC not to be or feel like an 18 year old falling in lust for the first time, losing her head over a pretty face or chemistry. I'd like her not to be dependent on this male for everything from food to safety to knowledge. I'd like a depiction of an alpha male who doesn't treat a woman as something to be controlled, used and discarded, or convenient. The power dynamics are icky AF and respect isn't unattractive in a character relationship. She can have a backbone without being an emotional wreck and he can be intriguing without being a dirt bag. She can be strong on her own without his guiding hand to get her there. She can set boundaries and stick to them, and he can be a decent person and respect them instead of forcing his will on her. She doesn't have to follow him blindly and he shouldn't expect it.

I'm increasingly disenchanted with this genre and its blatant sexism. Romance doesn't have to be this way but we can't seem to figure out another way to tell a romantic story. It should be simple: start with respect. Not "at least he is better than X character or person." Respect. R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

If you’ve read any Donna Augustine previously, you’ll know how this story goes. She has a formula she loves and sticks with it. I was actually a little disappointed this was the start of a series, because I really liked her last standalone that did away with all of the couple drama and carry-on that goes with it. Man in position of power (with multiple lovers/girlfriends currently) tells the MC nothing and is mean to her ‘for her own good’ and then she goes and falls in love with him after hating him for a while and runs. It’s a different magic world, but you can pretty much fill in the gaps.
And I didn’t like this world. Because nothing is explained to the MC, that means the reader knows nothing too. Zero world building going on, just an annoying woman running around doing stupid things because no one’s told her yet they’re stupid. Everything is so vague. It’s pretty light on plot, and combined with the lack of world building also made it feel like nothing really happened in the book. It’s just a bit too same-ish and without the world building to fall back upon it didn’t draw me in.

“𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘈𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘥𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐’𝘮 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘉𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘦.”

Bridge to Nowhereland is an annoyingly quirky little paranormal mystery that whets my appetite for this new-to-me series. Donna Augustine excels in bait and capture!

𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵. 𝘔𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘺. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘮. 𝘐’𝘥 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵. 𝘐 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘺, 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘮, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘵. 𝘛𝘢𝘹 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥’𝘷𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯.

Billie is not going to be an accountant. Her grandmother’s meddling put an end to that. Billie is now pretty much trapped between two worlds, ours called “Topside” and a lawless mirror universe called “Nowhere.” She’s not exactly physically trapped, but she just gets really sick if she tries to be somewhere other than the middle. And to make matters worse, her friends and family are starting to forget that she exists.

“𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘛𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘕𝘰𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘢, 𝘢 𝘣𝘶𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘛𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘕𝘰𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.”

Kaden is the boss of the outpost and for some reason he is very scary, as in everyone else is very scared of him. But not Billie. Billie is sarcastic, rebellious, and, honestly, quite a bit infatuated. She reminds me of Donna’s other sassy heroine, Karma.

“𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘳?”  “𝘞𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘹 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘪𝘹𝘦𝘥.”

The real mystery is what has happened to Billie and what are all the people (Cookie, Connor, and Dice) doing at the outpost? Why are they tinkers? Who requests the tinkering? And if there are so many rules, why is everything kept so cryptic for Billie? I was driven mad by all the secrets. If I were Billie, I would have planted myself down and thrown a Royal Tantrum until someone explained a few more things to me.

“𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵. 𝘐 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘭𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐’𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺.”

Or, maybe Billie has it all under control. If she can’t change her situation, then she’ll make the best of it. That’s right, swipe the best lollipop. Carpe diem, Billie! I really didn’t think any of the denizens of Billie’s new life cared about her at all, but the final pages brought a tear to my eye. This is a fun book that has convinced me to pursue to the next one!

My thanks to the author for an eARC for review.

From the beginning, this Urban Fantasy will keep you moving forward until you reach Nowhereland and live the experience of traveling into this unique world. Augustine’s world-building is amazing as it always is, the characters bold, funny, and heartening as well as annoying, even sinister at times – which really makes this story a fabulous start to Donna Augustine’s new series, “A Bridge to Nowhere Land.”
.
In the first chapter we meet Gram, her daughter, and then the main character Billie, the experience has an interesting dynamic and draws you in further. When Billie trips jumping across that bridge as it opens and lands in the outpost things just get more and more thrilling, intrigue is another word that comes to mind. Augustine has a flair for building these different worlds and luckily, we are all invited to this new location and learn how to cope and discover along with Billie.
.
The first people Billie meets at the outpost are Dice, Conner, and Cookie who want to toss her in the river – whatta crew – then the boss, Kaden. Billie seems only human to them, but she is a whole lot more with her aptitude for tinkering, and avoiding Chaos..... From that point in the book, I could not put it down. Seems Billie has talents that even Kaden is not aware of, and the sparks continue to fly.

A Bridge to Nowhereland
Going Nowhere #1
Donna Augustine

Donna Augustine always manages to instill some really cool original characters and storylines in her novels and A Bridge to Nowhereland is a prime example of her originality. Billie the female star, an accountant by trade and tinker in training handles her trip to the Outpost with total befuddlement and gives readers comedy, drama and even a hint of an upcoming romance and as the pages turn and the author unpeels a layer or two readers will get a better idea of who Billie is. And yes you heard right, she’s a tinker in training, Donna’s new universe is populated by tinkers, beings who give mortals a needed nudge to do the right thing by tinkering them. But not all characters are tinkers, and as readers get a look at Nowhere there are definitely more creatures which hopefully are disclosed in future books. By the end Donna will have her readers fully engaged and chomping at the bit for book 2.

A funny thing happened to Wilhelmina Adelaide aka Bille on her way to an interview for an accountant’s position. She crosses a bridge and somehow falls down some sort of rabbit hole to what’s called the Outpost, a sort of in between limbo existence between Topside (where she came from) and Nowhere (another weird plane of existence). There are some crazy characters at the Outpost too who after threatening to throw her in the river try to explain just what they do and what’s expected of her. And then there’s Kaden the handsome guy who runs the Outpost and one who Billie really can’t get a read on, is he friend or foe. But what Billie really wants is a way to get back to Topside, live her boring accountant’s life and hope she can put all this crazy stuff behind her, but if what everyone in the Outpost is saying is right then her life as she’s known it is over.

Donna Augustine's books are such comfort reads for me because I know pretty much what I am going to get, and I know I am going to enjoy it. This first book in the Going Nowhere series features heroine Billie landing in a fantastical situation (out of her normal American life), one in which no one she encounters is answering her questions, thus leaving both her and the reader to slowly discover just what is going on. It has the typical eclectic crew of side characters, the mysteriously stoic and attractive authority figure hero, and stubborn heroine balancing what to share and what to keep secret, while pretending she's not falling in love with the hero. This series is very similar to Xest (and other series from this author) and I flew right through it and am heading right into book two next for more of this urban fantasy comfort food.

Nails it every time

Donna is one of my go to writers. I’ve read all her books and am desperately waiting for more. The kind of desperate that I stop mid book on other writers to pick up whatever new one she has out.

Fun UF read; we got a decent amount of everything here: humor, angst, plot and intrigue, world building, magic, damsel in distress moments, j/p scenes, OWD. There was a lot that was very reminiscent of the authors other books though. I’m a sucker for an asshole who can’t help but be protective so overall it worked for me. Interested to see where the story goes and how the h is going to navigate her loyalty.

Overall: 3.5

This book feels eerily similar to her "Tales of Xest" series. Just like in "Tales of Xest" there is a mysterious super powerful/knowledgeable man that the FMC is awkard with. They have an antagonist relationship. Well, she is antagonistic and doesn't realize that he is actually trying to help her. Just like in "Tales of Xest".

She is thrown into another world/realm/place where she has coworkers that slowly start to like her. She gets messages. There's even a version of a machine different than what was in the "Tales of Xest" but still a somewhat sentient artificial intelligence that helps her out. All similar things like in "Tales of Xest".

There's even some similarities to her "Ollie Wit" series, which I really liked.

All in all if you haven't read her other series that I've mentioned you'll probably like this book. If you've read all her other books/series you probably recognize how repetitive this series is.

Billie annoyed me so much in the first half. Like I knew her emotions were valid and its normal to freak out like that, but I don't know if it was the writing or what but I almost stopped reading because of that multiple times throughout the first half. I also don't really understand the merits of Kaden not telling Billie shit. Like I understand that he thinks she's a spy (even though I don't even understand what there is to gain from spying on him), but damn he doesn't have to leave her completely unknowledgeable about Nowhere which is supposedly going to "eat her up"? After reading all 267 pages of this book, I am still so confused about what the fuck is going on. However, that confusion and the very unresolving ending point makes me want to read the next book. Unfortunately the next book will not be out for a while and I will probably have forgotten about this series by then.

Billie is a planner and a hard worker. Even if she doesn’t lead the most glamourous life; it’s still her life. Her favorite person in her family is her Gram who seems to only like Billie but at least someone likes her. Her Gram tells her some very strange things and in a short period, she finds herself stuck in a place called the outpost, which seems to be some kind of holding station for people who haven’t transitioned. All Billie wants to do is return to her old life, but according to Kaden, the man in charge, it’s not possible. No matter how infuriating Kaden is or how many times he tells her that she can’t go back she is determined to find a way.

The more time she spends in this strange new world, the more she seems to accept that maybe she is stuck. No one will explain how the majority of things work in this new place, but she’s determined to find someone, anyone who will explain and help her with the mess her life has become.

The new series by Augustine keeps you thinking and trying to figure out what is going on. More questions than answers plague not only Billie but the reader as the story unfolds.

Undecided

Sooo I've technically only read one full series of Donna's books and now I remember why I haven't read more of her other series. Kaden and Billie's story most likely will be great, however, it's the long process of uncovering is the problem I have. Literally we discover almost nothing in this book. All the time, I'm lost and honestly getting frustrated that every scene doesn't reveal more. Meaning like the entire book and we still don't have an clue on anything really. Why she is nowhere. Why is everyone rude af and no one seems to want to help her. Like there's this underworld that is portrayed as no one caring about anyone but themselves and their "jobs". While I don't mind solving mysteries, there's literally nothing to start with. Are we dealing with fairies? Angels? Leprechauns? Ogres? Ghosts? Demons? Is she technically dead or is this Men In Black situation? Idk. Now I have to continue reading to decide if this extra extra slow burn is worth the wait.

OK book

I like the characters. I wish I had realized that the book ends in a cliffhanger because I want to know what happens but had a difficult time being completely engrossed in the story so I'm stuck trying to decide if I should continue with the series or not. It honestly left me very confused with a lot of questions (that might be answered in the next book, who know?!). I also am not a huge fan of the narrator for the book. Some of her voices for various characters were really high-pitched and difficult to listen to. I'm sorry, I feel bad saying that, but I do think that is part of why I struggled to finish this book. Now, to decide if I'm going to read the next one or just let it go?!?!

Disappointed

I want to preface this by saying that Donna Augustine has been one of my top 3 authors for years but the last few books have seemed like all the same characters and storyline but with different themes. I didn't even finish her last series. This book is much like the most recent books but there are even some weird spots where characters move to different locations or there are jumps in time and it doesn't make sense - like abrupt transitions. It just makes me think that it was not well thought out.

Augustine Always Brings The Original

I didn't think I would like this book. It starts off kinda slow as it develops. Most of this author's books begin this way. But honestly the heroine got on my nerves. But sometimes people have to learn lessons the hard way.

Anyway, this story like pretty much all of her stories is original so by the end you are like, "I gotta wait for book 2? Write faster woman! I gotta know what happens!" With all due respect you wonderful author you! Cheers!

I enjoyed this one as I was reading it but had two major issues with it:

1. Deja Vu
Can’t speak for all of DA’s books, but if you’ve read Tales of Xest, you’ve basically read this book. The lead male character was a clone of Hawk. He’s the attractive womanizing boss with a clingy gf and she’s the out of her element heroine with unusual abilities. Throw in some quirky coworkers and mix.

2. Plot
There isn’t one. There’s a setup, but no complete story arc. Not even a cliffhanger really, just to be continued.

A Bridge to Nowhereland is the first in a new series, seeing Lead female Billie thrust into a new world with no roadmap, new skills with no user’s manual, and new challenges. While there are some familiar themes from Ms Augustine’s previous series revisited, I thought the turns and transitions were better then ever, the characters more mature and the writing more sophisticated. Just loved this book and excited that this is the start of a whole new journey.

What a phenomenal start to this slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers urban fantasy series - there is nothing I did not love about this book, from the idea of Tinkering, to the world-building; which was so well done you could picture the settings vividly. The characters are all likeable and relatable and the banter is great. This book is a real page-turner and once you start, you will not want to put it down - I finished it in a single sitting and have already started on book 2 ....

I inhaled this

I'm actually really annoyed at myself because I try to drae Donna's books out as much as I can, but I inhaled this one (again). It's fantastic, addictive and hooks you so fast. I loooooove Billie, Kaden, Candy, Dice and Connor. Fell in love with all of them. Can't wait for book 2. Wish I could give it more stars.

Enjoyed finding this new little gem in kindle unlimited! Read it in a go and wish book 2 was up. It has the Donna Augustine feel that are her popular series but in that comfortable way that drops my stress levels and makes me smile! Read it and enjoy people!

Donna’s world building skills are astounding! Truly a realistic-feeling environment! The characters are amazing and the plot is engaging. I can envision myself in Billie’s place and feel the pain of being ‘erased’. No soft, cuddly feels here; more along the sharp, dark and painful kind. I’ve been drawn in and need more!! ❤️Another brilliant work of art. Thanks Donna!!

loved!

This book was great! I’m excited for the next book in the series. If you like this authors other books you’ll enjoy this book as well. I did find the h a bit childish in her constant denial and without a strong backbone but I know it will come with the development of her character.

Very good

I read a few reviews before reading this that talked about how it was the same old story from Ms. Augustine and they rated it low for that fact. I can see how it relates to other books of hers, but that's what I come here for. It was perfect. I loved the characters and I can't wait for the next book just like every other series she has written.

DNF at Chapter 11.

This was one time when I will say that the narrator actually made a difficult book ever harder to listen to.

I give up.

After 11 chapters, I don’t like the female MC. I have no clue what is going on- there has been virtually no world building, and the narrator has the whiniest little girl voice I have EVER heard. Ever. (She sounds like a 5 year old)

What a unique take on a paranormal ability. I liked everything about this book. Great characters, nice worldbuilding, really good storyline, and kind of enemies to lovers vibe. Would like more snarky dialogue. Highly recommend.

Good Read!

It is a good read! Entertaining! I just felt that it is so similar to her newer Witch Series. The two main charactors have virtually the same personality. I also felt like their could have been more action. There was no real climax.

Weird and unpredictable

I liked this, it was an interesting ride. The FMC's behaviour evolved from timid to confrontational, some might consider that inconsistent but I thought it was fine, like she'd had a feisty bitch buried inside her the whole time.
