EDIT: I have gone back and read a few of the other reviews and I’m really surprised at the ones that rated one or two stars… Everyone has different taste but I really love this book. The protagonist does start out a little whiny and insecure but part of what’s appealing is seeing how she grows in confidence and ability overtime.
This is an absolutely outstanding series that I am so glad I purchased! The characters are engaging, the protagonist develops as a strong female hero, each book has a complete story with an over arching story that ties them all together. The fantasy world that the author develops is a reflection of our own but with a hidden undercurrent of magic. As the story progresses they travel to new places and new lands and we meet even more outstanding characters. Even the characters that are only in the story arc for a short time are well-developed with depth and interest. I read a lot of fantasy and this book has kept me engaged from page 1.
This has past week was so busy with life and work, but the Darkland Druid series waits for no one! I enjoyed the third book as much as I enjoyed the first two. This story is becoming so rich in folklore and character development, it is so hard to put down. At every turned page you dive a little deeper into the history of Druid and Fae. I’ve found all of this so interesting that I recently bought a book on Scottish and Irish lore. You know you’re reading a fantastic series when it pulls and pushes you to learn more about the platform and culture in which the story takes place. Journeying into different worlds to understand the origination of these incredible myths and characters. But, more about book three! In book three Elspeth does the unthinkable and meets with the witches! The witches don’t really end up being all that bad, in fact there’s almost this emotional familial pill that Elspeth feels amongst them. In this novel we are so much of the human that Elspeth is. How she craves friendship, love, and family. Once she has consulted with the witches she finally get the privilege to explore her Fae side. The portal is open and Elspeth has officially left the Druid’s. I do not want to ruin a touch of action and suspense so I’m really going to leave you right here. I can tell you Elspeth finally finds love, she comes into her whole being, and the rip roaring battles continue. I’ve become totally immersed in the Darkland Druid universe. I’m about to begin book four. The sad part is, book four is where our story concludes!
Elspeth want to go to the fae world to find out about her mother. So, she and Rory go the witches in Ireland to ask if their can use their portal. When they do the discover the witches have a lot in common with the druids and they make friends.
Once in the Fae world, Elspeth finds herself separated from Rory and Ignis and dropped right in the middle of a group of Chimera. She’s rescued by an elven ranger whom she helps save a village from a demon-possessed leader. Then they continue on to the capital.
Footnote: 1) This series should have been edited better. There’s a lot of places where there’s a misspelled word, wrong form of a word (there, instead of their) or added word (‘Another rickety door led out to the side garden, and ‘the’ lace curtains hung over the windows’. Makes it sound like the curtains were mentioned previously). It breaks up the flow of the story to suddenly come across something that doesn’t fit what you’re reading. At least for me.
Fave scenes: Ignis stealing the beer, Altrys leaning about arseholes, Elspeth learning to wash clothes and the guard who changed his mind about Elspeth.
10 out of 10 for excitement, intrigue and feels. I was wrong to wonder how this 3rd book could be better than the 2nd, and I doubted the 2nd could be better than the 1st. Each book is more fascinating and engrossing than the last. I can’t wait for the final book in the series. Really. I bought book 4, and have to start it right now.
