Another 5 star middle grade from Lindsay Galvin. That’s 3 for 3! Impressive. This book follows a stowaway on the Carpathia, the ship who rescued the Titanic survivors and the giant Newfoundland dog she befriends. The story is interspersed with Titanic Senate testimony and telegraph messages. This book does a great job of teaching readers about the tragedy without it being too much, because of the distanced perspective. As usual, Galvin keeps things interesting with short chapters and a zippy plot. Highly recommend.

Call of the Titanic by Lindsay Galvin

Clara lives on a farm and longs for adventure, especially when she hears of her cousin, Harry's adventures on the Carpathia. When he comes to visit, Clara decides to go with him without his knowledge. As a stowaway, Clara must try to escape the suitcase she is hiding in and soon meets the brown beast, Rigel.

'Call of the Titanic' is a story about a curious girl and a courageous dog. It is also an extraordinary historical fiction story about the Titanic. Instead of being set on the Titanic the entire time, it is set on the Carpathia, the ship that rescued many of the surviving passengers of the Titanic. Sid, a young steward working on the Titanic is being interviewed throughout the book as to his survival and rescue. He gives the readers insight into the horroric last moments of the ship and many of its passengers. He also sheds light as to the innovative and courageous ways in which people attempted to survive.

Lindsay's writing and dual perspective novel is entertaining and creative. Throughout the novel, we see menus, Senate Enquiry Transcripts, telegraphs/Morse code and chapters with the date and time. These exciting additions to the book create more tension, drama, and intrigue. I love a middle grade book with additional text types.

The characters are well developed, and each character has such a distinctive voice. Clara is a strong and brave young girl who understands how smart dogs can be, just as the Captain of the Carpathia who makes allowances for Clara and Rigel, despite unpopular opinion of those who consider them stowaways.

A dog on the Carpathia that has the intelligence of a rescue dog. A girl who fights for what is right and just. What more could we ask for in a middle grade? 'Call of the Titanic' is unique, and the research process is admirable. Lindsay Galvin has created an original historical fiction about the Titanic from perspectives unlike any other. What a fantastic first read for the New Year!

Thank you @scholastic_au @lindsayagalvin What a fun, entertaining and surprising read.

Bought this when it came out.....just read it! Been on the tbr pile too long.

I have enjoyed all the Lindsay Galvin books I have read and this is no exception. Historical fiction at it's best.

Sid is a cabin steward onboard the Titanic's maiden voyage.

Clara dreams of the adventures being had by her cousin, Harry, on board the Carpathia.

When her family are unhappy with her for misbehaving and she misses most of her cousin Harry's visit Clara get into the trunk that Harry is taking back to his mother in England. A BIG mistake. Clara falls asleep and wakes to find she is moving and she can't get out, and can't make herself heard.
When she realises she is on a boat she knows she has to get out - she'll die if she stays inside. When she is trying to get out though something is sniffing her from the outside, she thinks it's a bear. Actually it's a Newfoundland dog - inherited by someone in England...but confined to the hold. However he is very well behaved for Clara who is used to animals having lived on a farm. Clara is put into a cabin with some passengers to act as guardians. This courtesy is because of her cousin who is frankly rather embarrassed by her. But Clara is bored by the old lady and annoys her daughter. Rigel is her source of fun.

When he sees something in the water though - the captain accepts her description and wants her to tell him if Rigel (the dog) sees it again.
Then comes that night... Sid is on lifeboat duty. one of the other sailors tells him to get away from the boat quickly if he goes in the water.
The Carpathia goes to answer the Mayday call, they pick up passengers off the lifeboats - but the Titanic has gone, there is nothing there.

But Rigel sees something across the ice flows, Clara is scared but persuades the Captain to let her follow him - with a sailor who positively hates Rigel on the oars!

What do they find? What is the thing in the water?

4.5 stars. Amazing read! The story of Titanic but from the point of view of Carpathia, the ship that saved the surviving passengers. Throw in an incredible dog and a mythical creature and you have one of the most unique and intriguing stories about the famous ship for kids I've ever read. This is a third book of Ms. Galvin I've read and absolutely loved. She has now officially became my favourite writer :)

Thoroughly enjoyed this different take on the sinking of the Titanic. It follows a stowaway aboard the Carpathia and a Newfoundland she befriends. The two become instrumental in the rescue of a Titanic survivor.
Such a great story interspersed with Senate Enquiry Testimony and Morse code messages sent between ships the days before and the night of the disaster.

Lindsey Galvin writes middle grade fiction exceptionally well!

I love that she takes difficult topics and makes them approachable for a younger audience while still making it enjoyable for an older one!

I suppose the best word to describe this book is interesting. It was a mix of a story and some main facts about the Titanic. On a whole I found it interesting.

The Titanic is an historical tragedy that I imagine everyone knows of. From films to documentaries, books and more there is no escaping this most tragic of events. Author Lindsay Galvin has published her third epic middle-grade historical adventure and based it on the tragedy. Call of the Titanic is a gripping new spin on the tale, and it introduces a touching animal friendship, a hint of mythology and creates an uplifting alternative history of one of the real-life survivors, Sid Daniels. She writes with skill, with sensitivity, weaving in historical detail delicately and with a deftness that makes this a tantalizing read. I am quite certain that young readers will be fascinated.

Sid is a young cabin steward, and he is proud that he has a job on the Titanic, the greatest ship that has a ever been built. Clara is a dreamer, her dreams are of big adventures but as a stowaway she is in the hold of a much smaller boat, the Carpathia. It is here that she meets the biggest dog she has ever seen. The dog is Rigel, and he is on his way to be reunited with his owner. None of them, Sid, Clara, or Rigel could possibly imagine how they are going to find that they need one another one ice-cold terrible night. None of them could have ever imagined that an even more extraordinary creature might answer their call. Children reading this will find it historically accurate yet a comfortable read that they can relate to.
