Arizona Raptors #4

Sugar and Ice

When love is on the line, the worst decisions can end up having the best endings

Tate Collins, an all-American hockey phenomenon, was the highly marketable face of Dallas hockey. Loaded down with endorsements and playing his best game, he was a superstar and a household name. No one ever expected him to fail, but overnight, after the worst decision of his life, everything spirals out of his control. Abruptly, his reputation is in tatters, and he’s traded to the Arizona Raptors in a shocking move. Brushing off the wild and unfounded accusations that he faces on social media, and stuck on the second line, he keeps his head down and works hard to earn his spot. Tate knows he can make a difference if only his teammates would let him. Something has to change for him to earn their respect, but falling for the captain might not be his best move.

Vladislav Novikov has been called many things over his long and illustrious career, but the new nickname of Iceberg seems to fit best. Perhaps it’s due to his icy blue eyes, or the way he rams into opposing players as he defends his goalie. Or maybe it’s because of his cool demeanor when not playing the game he loves. Whatever the reason, it’s why he’s the perfect team captain for this wild bunch of puck-pushers. His perfectly controlled life is smooth as ice until Tate Collins rides into Tucson with his apple pie ways and those damn dimples. The young superstar immediately catches his eye. Despite knowing better than to start something with a teammate, the big, bad Iceberg is about to have that chilly veneer around his heart melted away by Tate one sweet kiss at a time.

I loved writing this book with V.L. - Tate Collins has been at the back of my head ever since Tennant Rowe left Dallas to move to the Railers in Changing Lines. Tate - the all-American wonder-boy was such a fascinating character for me because he has to try so hard to stay *perfect* in the eyes of the fans and the team. One slip and he loses everything, and I enjoyed exploring the fact that celebrity isn't all that it's cut out to be. Meeting Vlad is finding his safe space, and I loved that.

I do love this Raptors series from RJ and Vicki.

Book four centres on Russian defenceman and captain Vlad and the All-American golden boy Tate and a fierce attraction that won't be denied.

There's relatively low angst, it's suitably steamy and the drama never feel like it's just there to make up a plot.

Filled with humour and a sense of found family within all the new guys on the team, it was just what I needed.

Can't wait to see what's up next for free-spirited goalie Coronado Penn.

Tate's nickname is Sugar, and he deserves it far more than his teammates know. He's starting on a new team, after a public relations disaster he can't clear himself from without hurting someone he considers vulnerable. He's decided to set the past aside, and simply buckle down and be the player he knows he can be. Surely if he keeps his personal life silent, and his game in top shape, he'll get a second chance to prove himself. But he can't afford even one more slip-up.

Vlad has had the success he wanted, as a highly paid defenseman for the last decade. But as a professional athlete, and especially with a twin brother and parents still in Russia and unlikely to ever leave, his personal life as a gay man with Dom tendencies has had to stay under wraps. He's managed things by a regimen of tight control, working to be the perfect captain for the scrambled together misfits he's helping weld into a team, and rarely indulging himself, always out of sight. But Tate ticks all of his boxes - both in appearance and in attitude.

Starting anything, even a single night, let alone a relationship, would be dangerous to both of them. But even for two men determined to be sensible and careful, sometimes a perfect fit is too incredible to resist.

I enjoy this series, and liked both these characters, and the dual POV that let me get to know them. I liked their dynamic a lot, although I really wanted to see more of them together off the rink but out of the bedroom. The love happened fast, and I wasn't sure they really knew each other well yet.

One major issue for Tate seemed to get resolved far more simply than the build-up implied, and the fall-out I expected afterward faded to nothing. So the story felt a bit rushed, as if a few nuances were missing. There was room for more angst and hurt-comfort, and perhaps BDSM exploration and discussion, that just didn't happen.

But I still enjoyed it. The overall feel is sweet and warm. The guys were good for each other and I liked the increasing "found family" effect that the team is developing. Watching Vlad try to corral the goalie, Colorado, is amusing and I definitely want to read Colorado's story when it comes out.

Sugar and Ice is the fourth in the Arizona Raptors series and a spin off from the Harrisburg Railers, both of which involve hockey. I think you have to have a passing familiarity with the Raptors series so far to appreciate Sugar and Ice and knowledge of the Railers series will only help.

Sugar and Ice isn’t the strongest book of the series, I’m afraid. I found it pretty hard to connect with either Tate or Vlad. I just didn’t feel they had enough character depth and almost everything about their relationship seemed rushed. Neither Vlad or Tate was given the needed room to breathe, not in the way other characters in this expanded hockey world have been allowed. So, as a result, I often felt off balance when I was trying to understand these men. That isn’t to say they were caricatures or completely flat, only that they needed more development to make them truly relatable. Additionally, Vlad’s jealous tendencies weren’t particularly flattering and came off as a caveman, but not in a sexy way.

RJ Scott and VL Lockey have a knack for delivering MM romances filled with lovable characters, a huge sense of friendship and family and with a sparkle of banter, all this in the context of a sport team. It’s all of this that makes me read their series with pleasure because it works well for me.

So, this series follows the romances among the Raptor’s Hockey Team while this team is trying to rise into the NHL. Is it a standalone ? Yes and no : like I said, what I enjoy is the sense of support and camaraderie and it’s more appreciated and felt if all the previous books are read beforehand. In addition, as the characters are endearing, it’s nice to get a glimpse of the ones previously featured (even a glimpse of the Harrisbugh characters, yeah : that was a bittersweet bonus for me)..

The stars of this one are Vlad, the Russian captain of the Raptor team, cool-headed, called “Iceberg”, and Tate, the new guy in the team, with exceptional talents but also a reputation hugely, and unjustly tarnished. It’s nice being in the head of Vlad, with his huge sense of responsibility explaining his need of being in control, and in the head of Tate, so attentive to the others to his own detriment.

It's low on angst, the level of steam is there - although I would want more -, and there is some good banter. The development of the relationship between Vlad and Tate goes smoothly and at a nice pace, but I wouldn’t have minded for a bit more of depth.

In overall, a nice addition and a sweet moment for me.

This is one of those times when a compact short-ish story didn't work
There were too many elements that needed time, from Vlad's Russia problems to Tate's public problems, the love story just got lost and felt forced and sudden. It never unfolded it just landed, heavy. Such strong life changing feelings really needed more book time to develope. Less ice/team time would have worked better in this story. That said, the last part of the book felt the most real, when everything came together.
A good story over all

*Kudos for one of the best drunk/hangover depictions I've read. The loud walls had me chuckling 😄

I really felt for Tate here and loved how he was the bigger person. He kept his peace about what Lacey was saying knowing full well that she needed help. I did then find it strange that when she came to talk and after everything she had outed him for, he admitted to his relationships with Vlad knowing full well Vlad needed to be quiet about it, he gave her more ammunition and also put Vlad in the firing line.

I enjoyed this one. Tate broke my heart. I feel like this series has finally found its feet and its getting better with every book.

I like Vlad but didn’t really feel the need for the D/S aspect that was included in this one. It just wasn’t needed as far as I was concerned. He could be all serious without it. It felt like a mere plot device as it wasn’t explored enough between the guys to make it believable to me.

Out of all of the characters in all the series, Vlad is the one with the most to lose with his family still residing in Russia and having no intentions of moving. I felt for him in this case but I also liked how it was handled, and enjoyed that the guys came out to only a select few and kept their lives private, it wasn’t just brushed aside or miraculously fixed, they just found a way to live and work around it.

I loved Tate and my heart broke for him early on as he was trying so hard to connect with the team all the while dealing with his ex and dealing in a way that protected her too. At the start I didn’t understand that, as the natural reaction is usually to defend yourself against the accusations, but he took it all onboard and protected her at the same time. The resolution here actually worked for me.

It was hard to read when he felt he wasn’t connecting with the team especially when all he wanted was to fit in and find a home and place to belong. When it finally came to a head with Vlad at the party, it was good to see him finally stand up for himself a little.

Colorado is great comic relief throughout this series and I am really looking forward to his book next

This is the fourth book in the series - and links to other series by this talent duo of authors, both together and separately. I would definitely recommend that you read them in order, as they are very rich as a whole, but you could certainly enjoy this a great deal as a first read and go back afterwards.

Captain Vlad is delighted that many of his team members are happily in love, and even his friend from home (Russia) Stan, goalie for a rival team has settled down with the man of his dreams. He however does not believe that he will be able to find a boyfriend, let alone a husband, until long after his career has ended - as the backlash on his family back home could be awful. So when newly traded Tate turns his head, and gets him having to think horrible thoughts to calm himself in the showers, he knows he needs to keep his distance.

Tate has been traded by Dallas due to his ex-fiancée being very indiscrete and posting team secrets he shared with her all over the media. In fact she is still quite a problem, possibly due to mental health issues rather than malice, but the impact on him is the same - guilt, embarrassment and the reason he has had to move. His immediate attraction to Vlad is unexpected, certainly not unpleasant, but very complicated.

As these two guys sort out their feelings for each other, sort out their lives generally, and sort out team plays to lead them to rise in the league, we get to travel along for the ride. It is fun, hot and sweet, even the swearing parrot adds to the richness of the story. Very easy reading, and another excellent chapter of this up and coming hockey team full of entertaining players and partners.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Tate is a hockey superstar trying to prove himself on a new team while being smeared through the tabloid press by a malicious ex. Vlad is the closeted captain of Tate’s new team who ignores the attraction he feels to the team’s new star while trying to help Tate fit in.

We’re a long way into RJ Scott and VL Locey’s hockey books so most of this feels very familiar. The Raptors are still an underdog team but with Tate, they have the potential to pull themselves up the league table. I enjoyed the hockey action here and I liked Tate’s personal journey back to himself as a player.

This is definitely one of the more basic of the authors’ hockey stories. It’s an entertaining read but it lacks the character development I love in some of my favourites. Vlad feels a little too much like Stan - but he’s a Stan without the humour or warmth which isn’t quite the same. The romance in this book is sweet and a little steamy but it won’t be one of the more memorable love stories from any of the interlinked series. This is a fun read and a decent addition to the series but the authors have definitely written better.

Another solid addition to the series. And we got a little bit of my favourite character ever in this shared world, Stan. His conversation with Vlad about love and family was a joyful experience.

The relationship between Tate and Vlad had a touch of instalove about it but they worked well together and I'm glad that by the end Tate is loosening up the big guy and expanding his pop culture horizons. Vlad = Drax is a perfect comparison.

I did have a slight issue with the resolution of Tate's problems. It all seemed too easy after the amount of trouble she had caused. And Tate was far too accepting of her word that she had turned the corner, practically outing him and Vlad as a couple, to a woman that lied about him constantly on social media seems stupid and I'm surprised Vlad didn't express an opinion on it.

There was plenty of hockey time and time with the team. And this story is very much of founded family and being out with those you trust to keep you safe.

Roll on Colorado's book. Time to tame the beast!

I have loved every book in this series and all the connecting series. I know nothing about ice hockey, but that doesn't affect my enjoyment of these books. Tate has had it rough lately thanks to his ex-fiance, he has had to move teams from Dallas to the Raptors. There is a bit of an instant attraction and love between him and the team's captain, Vlad. They go from trying to ignore each other to being full-on together. The main issue throughout is Tate's Ex who has it out to ruin him, then after one conversation together all is well. That is the bit that bothered me, especially after all the horrible things she did, she ruined parts of his life! I did like him and Vlad together and I especially liked their dynamic in the bedroom. Vlad was so dominant and Tate just lapped it up! I definitely will continue with this series, I just love it. I adored all the previous couples, too!

It was good to be back with the Raptors. This time we have a romance between the stoic cold as ice captain Vlad and sweetheart Tate Collins, who was recently traded to the Raptors from Texas.

I’m a big fan of this series and I enjoyed Sugar and Ice but I would have liked for us to have spent more time with Vlad and Tate and see them actually falling for each other rather than being told. There were times when it felt like parts of their getting to know you story were missing and at one point I even went back a few pages in case I had actually missed something.

But on to the good. The hockey action was entertaining as it always is.. Tate and Vlad are a lovely couple and the addition of mild BDSM add a little spice to the intimate scenes. I like how Vlad loves listening to Taylor Swift and didn’t get any of Tate’s movie references and I loved Tate’s big heart. But my favorite thing in Sugar and Ice wasn’t our couple it was Colorado’s Emu. The Emu made me laugh and left me and it has been eager to read the next book in this series so we are learn more about Colorado. Overall Sugar and Ice was a good read and a solid 3 stars.

Can't connect with any of the characters because it doesn't dive into anything. We get surface emotions, unbelievable acceptance of things, etc. Try to think what reactions would actually be like in person and none of them are in this book.

Sugar and Ice, the fourth book in the Arizona Raptor's series is fabulous. This RJ Scott and VL Locey series never disappoints. I love hockey, I love romance, and I love the combo. Thus, I am always thrilled for these two authors to write another hockey romance.

Vlad is the Russian captain of the team, and Tate's the young star who made one big mistake. Both men have well developed back stories, and each man is extremely lovable.

Their story is one with an intense attraction, and they complement one another perfectly. But they are also two men who can't come out publicly with their relationship.

Each man has is own issues to deal with. Good god, the mess with Tate's ex is crazy, yet so damn believable, as she is just a crazy fame whore. As for Vlad's fears of coming out, they are realistic and saddening, all coming from a good place.

Their story is low angst, with plenty of steam with some light BDSM, including some Dom/sub play.

The authors throw in some great humor to offset the troubles these men are facing. This is seriously worth a read just for the banter between Vlad and his brother. Hysterical stuff! I want a whole book of just them exchanging barbs.

Told in dual pov, the reader is easily able to be brought into the mindset of each character. The authors explore the downside of being famous, in this tale of found family. I love the continued appearances of the other players, as this is part of what makes this series so spectacular.

Sugar and Ice is a stellar read. RJ Scott and VL Locey are at the top of their field when it comes to writing hockey romances. I love this book and I love these authors. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I absolutely adore any ice hockey books from Vicki Locey and RJ Scott. There's nothing better than two large muscular men going at it, especially in a sub/dom relationship. Be still my beating heart 😍

Still, despite the sexiness, the story still carried on the overall theme of the Raptor's series and all of my favourites were there, I cannot tell you how much I love Ryker and Jacob 😍

I did feel for both Vlad and Tate, both victims of their own success. As usual, in this series, there's the whole idea of being victimised due to your sexuality. In Tate's case, he's being singled out for protecting someone who is vulnerable. Tate's such a sweet character.

I love that there is a duel P.O.V, this way I got to know and feel what the other was thinking. I enjoy reading a character a chapter (if that makes sense). I loved reading every bit of the story, and read throughout the night, til I was finished.

Their story is full of sass, laughter, tears, compassion, love and friendship. As always these ladies made me hungry for more. I cannot wait to read Colarado's story. I know it is going to be epic!!!

I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

You start with Tate. He's in some trouble with his team, the country and the person he thought he could save. You aren't really sure what is going on, but you know that it's up to Tate to pull through. You are rooting for him to do that and while he does keep his head down and works hard to do well in his new team, you can feel his melancholy.

Vladislav is Tate's new captain and he's very stoic. He worries about his teammates, his family and wants the best for everyone. He has a quietness about him that gives others strength. When he meets Tate in the flesh, he can't help but notice how handsome he is. But, being captain comes with some drawbacks. He doens't want to interrupt his teams' dynamics.

These two heat up the sheets and the ice. But, you want them to succeed. They have a slow burn relationship, despite their physical attraction. I did think the issues with Tate could have been written with less mystery. It felt very strange to see the fallout but not know exactly what was the reason behind it.

Overall, you'll like these men. They have hearts of gold and a very strong connection.

It’s back to the Arizona Raptors for some more hockey romance, this time focusing on the team’s captain, Vlad, and their newest incoming player, Tate. With a bit of controversy following Tate from his former team thanks to a not-so-stable ex-fiancée and Vlad’s serious, focused demeanor, you wouldn’t expect there would be anything about to happen. But this is one of those subtle attractions that turn into something intense just…like…that.

Might be that dominant vibe that Vlad exudes all the time—in public or private. Might be that willing submissive vibe that radiates from Tate when they’re alone. Probably a bit of both ;-)

Everything about Tate and Vlad together works for me. The person I was not a fan of at all? Tate’s ex. Regardless of the cause behind her behavior and actions, she irritated me to no end, and while I know it may be an unpopular opinion due to her issues I still would have preferred for her to be publicly lambasted. Yeah, that’s how annoyed I was with her.

It’s always good to get to see the rest of the couples from the series; we even get a cameo from our favorite Railer. Arizona’s goalie, Colorado, keeps things quirky which of course just ups the intrigue for his own story.

Sugar and Ice is another great story in the series, and the dynamic between Tate and Vlad is perfect. This book was a 4.5-star read for me, and is meant for readers 18+ for adult language (from humans and birds alike) and sexual content (just the humans there—it’s not THAT kind of story).

I enjoyed this so much, I practically read it in one sitting.

These two had off the charts chemistry and the sex was hot. The romance was lacking, though.

They spent a lot of time in bed, but there wasn’t enough getting to know you before the “I love you’s” were proclaimed.

There was some great hockey and I’m looking forward to the next book to see how the team grows.

Sometimes all that glitters is not gold...
and here in book 4 of V.L. Locey and RJ Scott’s Raptor’s series we see what happens when Tate Collins the sweet golden boy from Dallas falls from grace and gets traded to the Raptors and goes toe to toe with Vladislav Novikov (Vlad) the captain of the Raptors.

Tate’s trying to rebuild his reputation after his personal life has imploded leaving his golden reputation lying in a heap of tarnished rubble.

Vlad’s got his hands full with playing shepherd to a flock of precocious children all while trying to keep his own life under control because being out and proud when you have family living in Russia is not a realistic possibility if you want them to stay safe.

While Vlad’s teammates may call him ‘Iceburg’ those same men have decided that Tate’s nickname should be sweet because of his reputation with the media.

Unlike some of the previous stories Tate and Vlad’s story isn’t about coming out because for their own reasons neither men is anxious to have this happen. Tate’s had his fill of drama and Vlad’s fear for his family’s safety has both men wanting to keep them between them only confiding in their closest circle of friends.

Tate and Vlad are characters who have both hovered in the background for a few of the Railer and Raptor stories, so it only seemed natural that they’d get a story that was just for them.

While I can’t say that Tate and Vlad were characters who sat at the front of my mind as being characters whom I wanted a story for, I can say that I very much enjoyed their story and I really like these two as a pairing…they just seem to fit, like a pair of well worn gloves and while I wasn’t tremendously curious for a story about them before this, I’m definitely hoping that we’ll be seeing more of them in the future. Not to mention more of Obi and Frank…now there’s an interesting combo, one Maine Coon Cat and one foul-mouthed McCaw parrot…seriously what more could a pet owner want.

Once again, we were also treated to a glimpse of previous characters from their fellow teammates such as Ryker, Henry and Alex along with Coach Carmichael to Stan Lyamin and Tennant Rowe. I love it whenever we get a glimpse of MCs from previous stories it all helps to create a more realistic feeling world when characters who have been so central to things in the past don’t just disappear but continue to play a role in events in the future.

I’ve followed this series from the beginning and before that back to the Harrisburg Railers where it all began and then there was a side trip to Owatonna U Hockey where we met Ryker and some of his friends and now we’re back in the pros with Ryker and his teammates on the Arizona Raptors and without fail I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each and every story and continue to look forward to finding out what comes next.

Tate is traded to the Arizona Raptors after an increasingly volatile situation and PR nightmare. The things that are said about him aren't true, but Tate doesn't want to hurt someone, even though she has hurt him and his reputation. It takes a little while for his new team to warm up to Tate, especially the captain, Vlad. Vlad needs to be in control at all times, and he's worried that there could be implications because he is nominally in charge of Tate as the captain of the team, as well as coming across as too clingy, which other lovers have accused him of.

I started reading this, and I was getting really angry at Tate's ex for how she was treating Tate, and how he was being portrayed in the media (and especially social media). So I was really involved in the characters, because I had to remind myself that the ex wasn't a real person. Then I put the book down for a few days, and when I came back, it seemed as though it was a different book. Everything happened so fast, I just couldn't believe the relationship between Tate and Vlad. And there were all these extraneous problems thrown in, and then add in the problem with the ex...it all just seemed overly dramatic, and it was not what I was in the mood for.
This is probably more like a 2.5 star read for me, but my disappointment was greater because I was so invested in the earlier part of the book.

These two heat up the sheets and the ice. But you want them to succeed. They have a slow burn relationship, despite their physical attraction. I did think the issues with Tate could have been written with less mystery. It felt very strange to see the fallout but not know exactly what the reason behind it was.

Overall, you'll like these men. They have hearts of gold and a very strong connection.

It was good to be back with the Raptors. This time we have a romance between the stoic, cold as ice captain Vlad and sweetheart Tate Collins, who was recently traded to the Raptors from Texas.

The hockey action was entertaining as it always is. Tate and Vlad are a lovely couple and the addition of mild BDSM add a little spice to the intimate scenes. I like how Vlad loves listening to Taylor Swift and didn’t get any of Tate’s movie references, and I loved Tate’s big heart. But my favorite thing in Sugar and Ice wasn’t our couple, it was Colorado’s Emu. The Emu made me laugh and left me eager to read the next book in this series so we can learn more about Colorado. Overall, Sugar and Ice was a good read and a solid three stars.

I didn't exactly hate this, but it wasn't very good and I definitely didn't like it.

After some initially, possibly interesting set-up it all fell flat for me.
It was a weirdly forced story with little sense, lacked chemistry, and everything was so shallowly handled.

I also really disliked the ex storyline immensely. That entire thing was handled very poorly.

Great group of hockey dudes

This book was kind of all over the place, but I really enjoyed catching up with everyone. This one has some angst with an ex with mental health issues and a little D/s between Vlad and Tate. Looking forward to the next one!

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I’ve been a fan of RJ Scott and VL Locey’s work since I was recommended this book through Amazon back in 2020, and have read pretty much all of their books, both individually and those that they’ve co-written. I’ve never gotten around to posting a review so here goes. I’ve decided to re-read all of their MM Hockey Romance books again so I can review them, which is as follows. I really enjoyed this book, and thought Tate and Vlad’s chemistry was off the charts, as well as hot as hell. Vlad, the massive Russian captain of the Raptors has a need for control in and out of the bedroom. He’s always known that he’s gay, but because of having to worry about his family’s safety back in Russia he’s always hidden it. That strategy worked extremely well until Tate shows up, and Vlad can’t keep his desires hidden for long. Tate’s ex fiancé Lacey went to social media and spewed complete and utter lies, as well as some secrets that Tate revealed to her while they were together, and made Tate’s old team drop him as well as receive hate from the fans. Due to the media backlash. She also made him out to be an ab*sive a*sehole but he was anything to her or anyone, he was his usual sweet as sugar self. Wow, the s*xy scenes between Tate and Vlad are steamy as hell.

Tate knew that Lacey has mental health issues and he doesn’t know why she’s being so vindictive and hateful when all he’s done is be a good partner and human being. Tate’s life is spiralling out of control with the media sh*tshow, and it doesn’t help that things with the Raptors aren’t the greatest. The tension between Tate and Vlad is palatable, it’s just jumping off the page. I loved that Vlad just listened to Tate when he told him everything that happened with Lacey, and couldn’t believe for a second that he’d doubted Tate especially with Lacey’s ab*se allegations. He trusted that Tate was telling the truth. I really enjoyed seeing Tate and Vlad falling in love. Tate’s family love him unconditionally and I loved how they accepted Vlad and Tate are together, but didn’t actually announce that they’re in a relationship, they just brought him into the fold. Tate was the missing piece that the Raptors needed to start clawing their way up from the bottom. Man, Colorado is a complete and utter handful and has probably caused Vlad a lot of sleepless nights trying to keep him out of trouble or clean up his messes. I’m looking forward to reading more books from their MM Hockey Romance Universe, and Colorado’s book is next. Man, he’s one of my favourite characters and I can’t wait to see what mess he gets into next. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and both authors to everyone.

One of the things I love about this genre is the strong feeling of family. This story has that in not only the team being family, but with Tate and Vlad’s family too. I loved Tate’s family and their obvious love for each other, and their easy teasing. And the way they just accept Vlad and make him a part of it. I enjoyed the conversations and friendship between Vlad and his twin brother Dimi too. Their conversations were fun.

Friendships also play an important part in the story. I loved the conversation between Stan and Vlad and their friendship, which reminded me of how much I love Stan and why. I’m looking forward to Colorado’s story next. He’s a total wild card, but with a heart of gold. The emu part of this story was a lot of fun.

As an aside, I love how the team all use their huge salaries to do good in the world by supporting charities, and how that includes helping out, and being involved in a very hands on way.

Vlad and Tate’s story is one of opposites attract although Vlad isn’t as icy as his name suggests and when he falls for Tate, he falls hard. I loved how he’s totally smitten with his pet bird, Frank, and loves everything Taylor Swift. I liked the glimpses of his soft side early on, and I loved how he’s fiercely protective of the people he cares about. That comes out with his family too, and why he’s hesitant to come out. His colourful language and curses are wonderful.

Tate is a sweet guy who has been pushed into a corner and a decision he should never have been put in the position to make. Although it was his decision, he really didn’t have a lot of choice. I liked how the situation his ex, although she’s a total piece of work and wanting the limelight, resolves at the end of the story. It would have been easy to paint her as a black and white shallow villain but instead, the authors take a much more complex, and more human route, which makes for a much more satisfying read.

The Guardians of the Galaxy references were spot on, and fun.

As part of the series, I loved seeing the other guys again, and getting a glimpse of where they are in their lives. I particularly enjoyed seeing Henry back on the ice, considering everything he’d gone through.

Although this isn’t your typical HEA, I thought it was perfect for these guys for where they are now, and with promise for the future.

I did like this for the most part, but I felt like much more could have been done. Once again, there wasn’t a ton of interaction with family and friends. Vlad had been talking to his twin about their mom’s birthday, and then we basically didn’t see or hear anything about his family for 3/4th of the book. Vlad never talked to his parents even though he apparently had a weekly call. With the book starting with Tate’s siblings taking care of him, I really thought we’d at least see a lot of them. Nope, we only saw them once more total I think after the first few chapters. There was an age gap of 10 years I think. Vlad was 35, and I’m not sure we ever got Tate’s exact age.

This was a bit similar to Poke Check because of the Russian element. Vlad couldn’t be out due to having family over there and the country being less accepting. Vlad was an interesting character, and I thought maybe he was bi a couple books ago. I swear in Alex’s book (Across the Pond) that it said Vlad’s girlfriend dumped him because she couldn’t handle the hockey lifestyle and not seeing him. Turns out he was actually gay, so not sure if that was someone else in Alex’s book, if he had been lying about it being a woman, or if the authors forgot. Tate was bisexual, but he hadn’t really done much with a guy before Vlad. I thought these two made a good match: Sugar and Ice. Although Vlad definitely wasn’t icey around Tate; he was hot with jealousy half the time.

The epilogue was cute, but honestly I was a little let down by this story. I get they couldn’t be out in the open, but I would have liked to see Vlad with his family since they were such a big part of why he had to keep his love a secret. I also would have liked more team building, or Tate doing his charity work. I don’t like birds, but Frank was hilarious. Probably go with 2.5-3 out of 5 stars on this. It was a fast read, but it could have been so much more.

outstanding couple, terrific story

Rating: 4.25🌈

I don’t know how I missed this the first time it was released but I’m all caught up now on a new favorite pair within the Arizona Raptors. That’s Tate Collins and Captain Vladislav Novikov. I do love me a Russian goalie ! If not Stan than definitely a Vlad!

Vlad with a potty mouthed parrot and a need to dominate? So hot. The scenes with Tate just about fog up the room. This is a couple who’s chemistry is wildly successful and off the charts because they are able to connect emotionally too.

Sugar and Ice is a story that I wish was actually longer in length because both characters have issues that could use deeper scrutiny as well as I just wanted more time with them.

For Vlad, he’s got a twin who plays professionally who’s as talented a hockey player as he is in Russia, along with the rest of his family. For a gay Russian , it’s safer politically, legally for his family in Russia for him to stay closeted. A sad and painful state of affairs.

For Tate, it’s a ex wife with mental health issues who’s determination to hurt him in the media that’s damaging him and his future.

Neither issue is examined to the extent it could be or as it was with Stan. With Tate , in fact, it was resolved extremely quickly. Both aspects of their pasts and story deserves a more detailed explanation.

However, this pair and their romance is so amazing that you take them to heart. I’d love a follow up novel after Vlad’s retirement. Or whenever. They are just that couple.

Colorado is a big character here and that’s because the next story is his. What a flamboyant, adorable man he is! Emu’s indeed!

Sugar and Ice (Arizona Raptors #4) by R.J. Scott and V.L. Locey is a terrific story with an incredible couple at its center.

It’s one I’m definitely recommending!

Always enjoy a redemption story theme

I enjoyed the story and I liked Tate and Vlad and wanted them to get their HEA. As usual there is the romance story and then some sort of sub story that creates drama. The sub story here is really stupid and there is no believable way that it would be handled like this by either Tate or the people around him or his team ownership. And then, in what has become another pattern with these authors, the crisis subplot just fizzles. Seriously anti climactic. It just makes no sense.

The relationship storyline is harder to navigate as Vlad is closeted due to his family still in Russia where homosexuality is far more problematic than in the US. But the relationship is sweet. I also liked the portrayal of Vlad’s responsibilities as team captain and it tied in nicely as a segue to the next book which will focus on Colorado.

Once again the editing is a big problem. I just don’t understand how two authors working together can be this bad at this. The continuity errors, the research errors, the proofreading errors…it’s all super annoying to me not only as a reader but as a teacher who emphasized proofreading a product you were turning in. I guess I’m old school about this, and I understand people not editing their social media posts (though I still cringe) and lord knows I often don’t proofread these reviews as I should, but a book you are publishing and people are paying for is a different kettle of fish and there should be more pride and professionalism.

I’m invested in the universe the series is located in and the characters so I will continue reading I just wish I was seeing improvement over time in the research and editing.

4 Stars!

Tate was the golden boy of the hockey league until things go sideways in the worst way. Traded to a new team, he finds himself on the not so fun side of fame and having to prove himself to his new teammates. Vlad isn't too sure about Tate and definitely doesn't like his attraction to him. Vlad keeps his private life, just that, private, and messing around with another player is definitely not in his plans.

Initially, I wasn't too sure if I was going to like Tate. It was clear things had gone very wrong for him, but he also needed to let go of his ex-team and their manner of doing things. I was happy to see him start fitting in better and clear the air with Vlad when needed. Vlad likes to stay in control and his growing feelings for Tate really take him some time to adjust to. While I liked seeing Vlad's becoming vulnerable where Tate was concerned, his jealous behavior was not the best. I was glad Tate called Vlad out on it. They clearly had chemistry, but sometimes I felt like we missed some of the relationship-building that would have made them feel more solid as a couple to me. I was glad that they were able to work out how to be together, but I felt like their story wasn't quite finished.

I've wanted to read this series and its predecessors for a while, but I couldn't resist the blurb on this one long enough to go back and catch up on the series first. You can read this one as a standalone like I did, although I suspect that the experience would have been richer had I read the others first. I will be reading the previous books as soon as I can.
