The True Queen of the Lathai #0.5

The Exiled Prince of the North

Rate this book
Siveril is the prince of the Northern Isles, and next in line to rule the Malda. During a raid on an elven city, he took Elluin hostage, intending to use him as leverage in the war against the elves of Lathai.

But Elluin is no ordinary child, wiser than any elf or mortal should be at ten years of age, and soon Siveril finds himself questioning the morals he has held for his almost eight centuries of life.

Will he side with the Malda, killing Elluin and driving the war into the southernmost parts of Illistra? Or will he break away from his traditions and aid the Lathai?

”Head back, shoulders high. Act as though you’re more important than them,”
“Act like you?”
“Yes”

A fantasy novella featuring elves and Malda, a race of people who wear finely crafted masks and are gifted with the ability to "escorcel" (or glamour) people to their will. Half of the novella follows Siveril, a Malda and Prince of the Northern Isles, and Elluin, a ten-year-old elf, as they escape a floating prison and seek refuge with Elluin’s relative, Queen Aramaris. The rest is a storytelling flashback as to how these two odd companions find themselves on the run involving warring kingdoms, murderous siblings and prophecies.

This is a novella that sets up a world. It’s a prequel to The Last King of the Mountain and it shows. It does a good job of setting up this world torn by war, elves feuding against malda and how enscorcelling works. It ends in a Epilogue, which does a fast-forward style recap of events between the story in the novella and presumably, where Book 1 starts. It also comes with a chapter of Book 1, which is a great way to figure out if the series appeals to you. The Malda are intriguing and this is a great read if you love discovering something new, but also love elves.

I was given a free download of this book from the author.

Wow. I've read books from long standing authors that aren't nearly as good as this novella. If Daytona can present such incredible world building and complex characters in a short story, how good will the first novel be?

Can't wait to read The Last King of the Mountain.

My only nit pick is that I struggled to keep on top of all the characters and what was going on, but there is a glossary to help.

Would definitely recommend!

The world created in this story is very unique and interesting. The characters are likable and you start to care about them (which does not happen easily for me). I'm very excited for the next book to come out!

Here, finally, is the long overdue review of this wonderful work! I received an ARC of The Exiled Prince of the North from the author, and have been meaning to review for a while now. So here it is, at last!
The Exiled Prince of the North works beautifully as a novella, and immediately draws in the reader, immersing them in a detailed world with ages of history and conflict. I am duly impressed at the amount of information that Daytona has packed in here! The read felt much longer, and by the end you are completely rooted in the lands of Illistra. The maps provided are lovely, and very helpful. The world building is absolutely fabulous, and the masks of the Malda add a perfect touch to a unique society and culture. You can just feel the deep magic embedded in the world, and through little hints and details, Daytona writes this age and lore in very well.
My favorite part would definitely have to be the characters. All of them are fantastic, and gorgeously written. I particularly liked Queen Aramaris, and would have loved to see more of her character, but she fit in well when she appeared to move the story along. Of course, I adored Elluin and Siveril. Elluin is simply so lovable, and I really appreciate his depth and wisdom—often so hard to find in the youngest characters! Siveril is the perfect shade of morally grey, and his relationship with Elluin is so so perfect! The inner conflict and responsibility that Siveril feels for his little companion immediately drew me, and I fell in love. Honestly, these two. I need more of them, like right now.
Overall the story enchants you. The smooth, swift pacing and intricate features draw out a shorter work in a way that keeps you hooked on every word. Snappy, clever dialogue keeps the pace quick. Gentle, heartwarming moments make for great bonding between characters, and balance out the chilling, darker undertones. Dropped hints along the way keep the reader intrigued in what is to come. This story creates a fabulous world and sets up fantastic relationships, clearly building up for something remarkable. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and look forward to whatever else Daytona releases!

I was given an uncorrected proof/ARC copy from the author. I will keep this review spoiler-free.

Wow! This novella was attention-grabbing! There are is a lot of information given in just 50 pages. The novella starts with gorgeous maps (and trust me, they are HELPFUL). We then meet who I assume will be the two main protagonists throughout the series. They are both witty, intelligent and very lovable, and I found myself invested in their development very quickly. As I have not read the first book, I can only assume that the information given in this prequel will be beneficial to the plot of the series. It was definitely great for character development, and I already feel like I have a good basis of who these characters were when they were younger and I'm ecstatic to see what they grow up to be. The prequel also ended in a way that tied in really well with the first novel. Daytona included a chapter from the first book, and the transition was well done. After reading the first chapter of the first book, I can honestly say I want to dive headfirst into the land of this series!

The language used in the book was lovely. It was easy to read, the depictions were gorgeous, and I felt like I was with the main characters. The writing style reminded me of other epic novels and I have a feeling that this series could be among them once published! Just be prepared, there are a lot of names and new words that will be thrown at you (Daytona said there will be a glossary) so this may be a novel where flipping back and forth between pages might be necessary. I personally found it easy to pick up on the new terms and races, as they were described easily.

I'm excited to see what Daytona comes out with next!

Siveril is really not a nice guy ... actually I guess he's not a guy, he's a Malda, one of the races which inhabit the world of The True Queen of the Lathai series. But still, he's not a nice Malda. As heir to the throne, Siveril has spent years, centuries even, studying military tactics. Sparing the boy Elluin and bringing him home to the palace with him was nothing more than a ploy, figuring on using him as a bargaining chip in the war against the Lathai. Then Siveril began to like Elluin, and his sister found out and reported to their father, the King of the Norther Isles ... who ordered him to kill the boy.

I recommend you have the next book handy when you finish The Exiled Prince of the North. This short story only gives a glimpse into the world the author created for this series. I can't wait to find out more -- and decide if Siveril is maybe a nice guy after all.

This book as short and to the point. The Prince and his manservant head to a kingdom far away to get help from a queen that hapens to be the 4th or 5th cousin to his manservant once removed. Once in the palace he is imprisoned again this time by the neighboring kingdom and not his own for a short period of time. He tells the queen of how Ellison came to be his manservant, how he was betrayed by his sister, and how he was blinded and disfigured. Later they come to an arrangement of sorts. He helps her, she helps him. They battle the kingdom and then afterwards unite them through marriage. This story could have been longer and I wish it was. I may check out more from this author soon.

Oh, dear... The writer gave herself a five star review, so this book must be absolutely amazing, right?

Not.

Too many characters, too convoluted, too many weirdo names. Just a mess, with no real heart.

I appreciate the fact that young writers need time to develop and grow, and I'm sure the writer worked really hard on this, so I'll give her two stars. But that's really a gift. I'd recommend you don't waste your time or money on this amateur effort.

Really enjoyed the book. Sort of slow start, but as the story developed, I couldn't put it down. This was a great read but I don't like novellas because they are so short that you just get yourself immersed into the various characters and it's over. Book 2 is even shorter so I don't think I will be buying it.

This short story made me want to know more about everything. I wish it was longer. It was a bit confusing at first with all the different names of kingdoms and creatures but you get the hang of it fast. I want to know what happened on the floating prison too! I hope more is explained in the other books. That I cannot wait to read them. I absolutely love this beginning of this series.

The story was okay but there is alot missing for me in this story. Maybe because its a short story and would have been a good back bone for an epic series
