This volume was also pretty meh, but maybe a bit better than volume 1. I'll read at least the next volume since the new characters could make the story more interesting.

These girls are so cute!

What's this? Feelings of longing for each other? Missing each other? Constantly wondering what the other is doing? They've been hugging often too. I think they both are getting close to the point that they start to consider their true feelings towards each other, and, as ABBA sang, saying, "take a chance on me" to each other. Or as Air Supply put it, "Making love out of nothing at all". There was a time they'd never spoken to each other. Now they're nearly inseparable. I think these 2 are perfect for each other. It's so obvious just being near each other makes them both happy. I hope love does indeed blossom between the two. Art, very well done. All the girls are cute. Dialogue, very real, very true to life. Characters, believable, likeable, relatable, and adorable.

This shouldn't be called Yuri
This shouldn't be called slow burn

Its should be called Queerbaitimg cause Fujishiro and Kurokawa are never going to be together
There are so many things that are kinda problematic if its unpack.

Volume 2 of Failed Princesses is a lot like volume 1. The two leads seem more like friends than potential love interests, though this is marketed as yuri so I expect that will change...eventually. But it hasn't yet. Again, one girl berates the other for her lack of style and tries to make her over so she's more worthy of being friends with, which I don't care for. That happened a lot less in volume 2 than in volume 1, so hopefully that plot device is wearing itself out.

This volume had a couple instances of males being sexist towards the girls but it was nice to see they didn't just put up with it. But I did think that physically assaulting a teacher was a little over the top.

In volume 2, the girls each have a chance to defend one another against rumors, false accusations, gossip, and sexual harassment. It's nice to see them becoming closer friends, even if nothing else has happened between them at this point.

Two side characters are stepping into more prominent roles in volume 2 and the author promises more from them in the next volume. I'm not a fan of unnecessary love triangles where there's a third wheel that no one is romantically interested in, but this trope is rearing its ugly head and I'm not looking forward to seeing it in the spotlight in the future, but here we are.

I've read sex scenes that don't have the emotional resonance of the hugs in this volume. All romances should be written with this level of character building.

I liked most of this volume. The returning "friend" story arc brought the tempo down for me but the ending was strong.

Another adorable, drama filled volume!

I have to say, while I don't agree with Fujishiro's actions, I love how blunt and impulsive she is. Again, not condoning her actions, but it's nice to see a female romance lead how such a hair-trigger reflex to protect her love interest. Kurokawa has grown a bit as well and I felt a connection when she tried to explain to Fujishiro's friends what really happened. I'm also not good with inpromptu public speaking and seeing her struggle to gather herself and defend Fujishiro hit home. I was proud that she followed through with it, even if she had to be rescued at the end.

Iroha's introduction and Izumi's talk with Fujishiro officially makes this a love quadrangle, which doesn't surprise me, but it's interesting how Iroha and Izumi have similar personalities to Fujishiro and Kurokawa respectively. I don't dislike either, but I can safely say that Fujishiro and Kurokawa are a better match for each other. That being said, it was nice seeing Izumi break down Fuishiro's feelings in a way that not only makes sense, but brings Miki's feelings into context. Not that it makes Miki's actions okay (it most certainly doesn't), but it does explain both her's and Fujishiro's anger and competitiveness.

Anyway, I really liked this volume and am loving this series so far! I love me my romance drama and this definitely delivers!

I usually dread when mangas introduce the “long lost friend” bc it can sometimes feel like an unnecessary obstacle thrown in the way. Doughnuts Under A Crescent Moon sort of did that and If I Could Reach You did, as well. It’s usually just a character who either has feelings for one of the MCs or is meant it make one of the MCs be jealous of the time their love interest is spending with their old friend and how well they know each other. This manga is of no exception.

I found Kanade’s old friend to be sort of blank in terms of personality. She’s just excited and that’s her one trait. After seeing Fujishiro go to bat for Kanade in a way that was kinda frightening, it was sad to see them have someone shoved between them

However, this volume shifts from the 100% focus on appearance to issues with interpersonal relationships: jealousy, confusion, etc. I appreciated that.

Although a simple story this volume proves this story is worthy of praise so far.
I was afraid the story would become repetitive, but was surprised the author is keeping things fresh by adding in some drama and even new characters. The drama might be seen as excessive and distract from the sweeter or cuter moments, but I think it works well to build Kanade and Nanaki’s relationship and make them feel believable. With the side characters I also think it helps the story. In a lot of romances extra characters can drag the story down or cause it to become unfocused. But so far the characters not only add some variety but also contribute to the overall story and arcs of drama. There’s enough drama and enough cuteness in this volume to make it a good read.

'Failed Princesses' is a cute new manga I picked up, about a school's princess who is comforted one day by a her plain and reclusive classmate, and decides to repay her kindness by giving her a makeover -- only to find herself torn between jealousy and adoration of how cute her classmate can become. It's a light and fun read, even when dealing with weightier matters of social bullying and tangled emotions among people you thought were friends, and I'm going to look forward to where it goes from here as they introduce new people into the mix.

What Do You Call A Right Hook If It’s A Bag?

This volume really shows the evolution of Kurokawa’s character and Fujishiro’s developing feelings. She may not know what they mean but we certainly do! Also she finds she isn’t as excluded from her old friend group as she thought. There’s also a spanner in the works of their friendship in the form of a face from Kurokawa’s past! Must. Resist. Buying. Next. Volume. Immediately.

Definitely the cutest 😁

I really enjoyed this manga! Fujishiro is my favorite, I love her quick temper and that she defends Kurokawa without hesitation. Excellent illustrations. I will definitely be buying the next volume! I can't wait to see what is in store for them next.

I really like this series so far!

We continue to see more inklings of yuri but still nothing explicit yet, so I like the slow burn as the girls begin develop their feelings for each other. The introduction of new characters and drama feels natural and not forced.

2020 Read #589

I did enjoy this volume more than the first, and it’s interesting to see Fujishiro being the one to “fall” first for Kurosawa. The dynamics between them are really cute!

It’s cute, but very trope-filled and rather predictable. Not something I’ll likely invest in because I don’t find it to be exceptionally rereadable.

Well, at least now we know why it’s Failed Princesses, plural.

There’s a lot to unpack in this volume and I think the characterization of our leads remains wonderfully complicated. What it boils down to, however, is Fujishiro getting swamped by a tidal wave of emotion she can’t figure out, but the reader can pretty much guess, when it comes to Kurokawa (the latter is just better at bottling things up).

And while expressing your emotions is good, expressing them to the full extent a teenager is capable of? Possibly less good. Fujishiro gets herself into one hell of a mess this time around, in a scene that went from sweet to brave to shocking in record time. I’ve never seen anybody behave quite like that in a manga and the repercussions echo throughout the book - it’s a fascinating piece of plotting.

No, we don’t have the somewhat gentle (if fraught) meeting of two people this volume. Fujishiro was very much the centre of her own universe and being pulled into Kurokawa’s orbit is causing chaos because she can’t deal with it - it explains her mercurial temperament from the end of volume one and through most of this one.

Poor Kurokawa herself has to endure so much - the scene where she sticks up for Fujishiro for a change, after the latter’s fall from grace, is painfully real (the panel that illustrates this? Phew...). This series gets that high school is a war zone better than anything I’ve read lately.

Elsewhere, I successfully called one of the plot turns this volume and I’m interested to see what Izumi adds to the mix. Right now she seems to have the obvious unexpressed crush that won’t go anywhere, but this book has been so good that I wouldn’t be shocked if it was at least aimed in a direction we’re not expecting (even if it isn’t, just raising the possibility believably is good writing).

I’m less sure about the other character they inserted into the narrative, a little of whom goes a long way. Then again, the way she’s making herself known everywhere is very deliberate and I am well aware that part of her potentially annoying nature is both to illustrate her getting in the way of the romance and because this particular part of the story is framed more from Fujishiro’s perspective.

Still, she does give Kurokawa the opportunity to put forward the thesis statement of this and many other yuri titles - you should be able to like what you like. It’s hardly revelatory, but it can’t help but feel a little less trite when presented in a story this well told.

I don’t know. This is probably still a four star book, but this is also my favourite ongoing right now and I can’t bear to give it less than five based on that alone. That makes absolutely no sense, but, then again, this book’s point is that love can express itself in strange ways, so it feels kind of appropriate.

Like what you like, indeed.
