Both A Blessing And A Curse Of Destiny
This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read Path Of The Guardian!
Brian has spent his life being marginalized and ridiculed for something that is no fault of his own and completely involuntary. He has Tourette's Syndrome. Besides physical tics he randomly drops the F-Bomb ... Especially when he gets nervous, upset or stressed. After constantly moving his WHOLE life from place to place he finally has real friends... Two of them. They ignore his issues and just treat him like a *real* boy. It is amazing! Too bad he has plenty of ridicule from the popular crowd at school. He is the Freak Boy. He wants to stay though because real friends are impossible to find! When Mark and Darryl decide they want to visit a psychic, he thinks it is a small price to pay for their unwavering friendship. Little does he know his whole life is about to change forever! What does the cryptic prediction really mean? How can a curse come with a blessing? Why is the nice, pretty, popular girl Shannon working at a Psychic Shop? Should he believe what the Psychic said? Or dismiss it as a bunch of malarkey? What is he having such bad nightmares? Oh, how I enjoyed this book!! The story was so engaging from the get-go and soon became a huge mystery to me. I love it when I think I have the whole story figured out and find out I was completely wrong, because I love the surprise. The story flowed and had me on the edge of my seat so many times. It's one of those ... root for the underdog ... type of books. And, I did ... and then the story just got better and better.
The story of Brian and Shannon was intriguing and interesting and amazing and something I'd love my 15 year old to read, as I truly believe it would be something he'd like as well. The paranormal, the mystery, the friendships, the bad guys, the secrets, and then the truths as they come to light little by little just make this such a fantastic ride.
Font captured me with this tale with her imagination. The world and characters she created are so original and captivating. I'm not surprised by this, because Font writes everything amazingly well, but this is the first YA book I've read of hers. It's a must read for those paranormal lovers out there.
I honestly can't wait for the next book. Oh, don't worry... this one didn't end on a huge cliff-hanger or anything, it ended in a good place, but one that also makes you need more. Just my kind of ending to an installment of a series.

I believe the synopsis gives you a wonderful summary of this book but what it doesn’t tell you is the style of Lorenz Font when she weaves a story for her readers. Be prepared when you open a book by her to be swept away into a world that captures your attention and heart, while being something that you will never be able to predict the ending of. I have yet to read anything by this author that doesn’t quickly capture my interest and heart, taking me away from the world of reality and into a realm of mystery, suspense and action. Her books makes the reader come to life, activating every one of our senses and leaves us with a thrill and message that will not be forgotten.
As you see with Brian, he appears to be the normal awkward outcast in school. Dealing with his issues, embarrassment keeps him in the shadows of others. Lorenz never lets her characters sit in victim role for long though, you will be excited to watch as Brian learns the truth for his purpose in life. As the pieces come together for not only him but the readers, hearts will begin to race and minds will begin to turn, all trying to predict what his next step will be.
Shannon is not as she appears to be on the outside and it didn’t take long for my heart to belong to her. I am not usually a fan of stories centered on teenagers, especially girls, but Shannon was a unique girl who was doing the best she could with what life had handed her. As her story begins to unfold, it gives the reader another level of intensity. Once again, this is an example of how Lorenz Font can take the reader from an average read to something remarkable with one of her stories.
I felt that my husband would enjoy this book so I offered it to him to read. He is very particular with what his choices, it needs to be fast paced, not an over load of love and romance and the suspense has to be believable. His attention span is short lived so if you want him to finish a book it has to be one that he can’t put down till he has turned the last page. This was one of those books for him. When I asked him what he would give as far as a rating he said certainly, five stars. Even now he can’t forget the story and is continually asking me if the second book is close to being released.
When trying to describe any book from this author the very first thing I say is her books become a big screen movie for the reader’s minds. She encourages us to enter into the scenes with the characters, and experience the events along with them. She makes us feel the emotions and what I love most is she isn’t afraid to let the characters drive the story. If you can find an author who is loyal to her characters and faces the fear of putting it out there, you are promised a ride of a life time in each story. This one will not disappoint, it is unique, investing and will have you begging for the next book so we can continue the mystery that life has left Brian and Shannon in.

The cover pulled me in because it reminded me of those Gangers from Doctor Who, and while the synopsis talked about the main character having Tourette's Syndrome and having to protect the popular girl, I was really interested in reading this story.
I thought it was an okay read. It was quick and easy to read, if at times I found the wording was a little awkward at times- but maybe it was because it showed how eccentric, and geeky Brian was.
I had trouble with the idea that Brian had Tourette's Syndrome and he had these tics -the shoulder jerks, and yelling out "Fuck"-but when I was reading, it seemed like they would just disappear, and Brian would become a normal teenager. I mean, from what I've read/researched, I thought the tics occurred many times a day (often in bouts), and it basically made the person's life hard, but with Brian, it would magically disappear and appear at random times. I guess either it wasn't as severe as it was made out to be or it had to do with the fact that he was Alpha all along.
Speaking of which, it was a surprise when it was revealed who Brian really was. Since we spent literally 90% of the book thinking that Shannon was the important one, I felt sort of like the rug was pulled out under me, but in an "eh, whatever" sort of way. I guess if there was more importance or if things were explained a lot more, it would have been a really great twist. But alas...
The whole keeping secrets and lies got a little old. They were annoying, but if anyone was paying close attention, like clearly Brian wasn't, one could easily figure out that it was Brian who was the one who was special, not so much Shannon. But he was so obsessed with Shannon that his only thoughts were of a hormonal teenager-him wanting to kiss her, or hold her hand, or touch her or whatever. All I can say is that I was glad they became a couple in the end 'cause after all they went through, they deserved, especially since there's a long road ahead of them.
I'll probably read the next book in the series to learn more about Alpha and the other world and see where author leads the story. Should make for an interesting sequel.

It was hard for me to decide how many stars to give this book. While it did take me a bit to get into this book I do want to read the next one. I kind of wished it had more of what I’m not exactly sure. Not sure if it needed more action or more romance but like I said I still want to read the next one. Brian has a form of Tourette’s; his phonic tics and twitching have plagued him his whole life. He hates them and the whole he feels it makes him separate from everyone else. He has two friends who accept him for who he is. They are starting their senior year of high school. After seeing a physic his life is completely changed. He is quickly paired up in two of his classes with one of the most popular girls in school, Shannon. Shannon has never paid any attention to Brian but finds herself with him more and more. She too received a prediction from the same physic that she and Brian need to be there for each other. She may have first talked to him because of it but now she realizes that they have lots in common and actually like each other. Both their lives are about to change. They are both told one thing when the complete opposite is the truth however neither is told the whole truth until the very end. Brian is told he needs to protect Shannon, that she is the next leader of another planet. Brian and he friends learn all about this other race of people from another plane of existence. There are creatures after Shannon and she is safest with humans. This book is a good read and interesting. The premise of the story and everything hooked me I just wish it had something more. It could be because its YA and I haven’t read YA in a bit. I do look forward to reading the next one. Brian and Shannon have a great romance and I can’t wait to read more about it and their people. This is the first book by Lorenz Font I have read and I look forward to reading more by her in the future.

This is how you start a new series! Ms. Font ended this exactly at the right place. No huge cliffhanger, but I can't wait to find out what happens in book #2.
Brian is a highschool senior whose Tourette's Syndrome has made him a social outcast at school. He is lucky to have two faithful friends who don't seem to care about his tics and shouted "f-bombs" (as he calls them.) They all go to a fortune teller who reads the tarot cards for him. Her receptionist just happens to be the beautiful girl he crushs on at school. Of course, he gets all nervous and runs out twitching and spasming to his complete mortification. Thus begins the most exciting, interesting, frightening year of his life.
He is dumbfounded when the beautiful Shannon seems to want to spend time with him. Trying to get off his medicine he starts having nightmares of tragedies before they happen. Before he knows it he is caught up in things he doesn't understand and spending lots of time with Shannon as their lives become more and more intertwined and confusing.
I was sad when the book started into the "fantasy" part of the story, because I was really enjoying the characters as they were. I was really pleasantly surprised that it just got better and better. These are characters that you will cheer for. The story is told by Brian and he is a kid with a lot of heart and a true sense of honor.
This book is probably aimed at 15+ YA readers as there is some profanity. If you are older than YA, give it a try. I am so old I don't even remember 15 and I really want the next book to come out soon. I can't wait to see where life takes Brian from here.

Usually, Font's book suck me right in from the very first word, but I have to admit, the first 15-20% were a bit of a struggle to get into and I can't even explain why. However, once I got past that, I read the next 70% in one sitting without even realising.
Right off the bat, we're introduced to Brian, a kid who's been fighting for acceptance his entire life thanks to his Tourette's. He has a couple of close friends and he's mostly happy with his life. Then he goes to a tarot card reader one night and his entire life changes...
Becoming friends with Shannon is Brian's biggest change and he's not quite sure how to act around her as not only she pretty, but she's one of the most popular girls in school, yet she accepts him for him. Tics and phonic tics and all.
That's not the strangest thing to happen to him, and all I'm telling you for fear of spoilers. Once things start to change for Brian, this story is one of the most consuming I've read for a while. You honestly have to keep reading to find out what happens next.
Naturally, there's a twist at the end. It wouldn't be a Lorenz Font book without one... and I have to admit, I didn't see it coming at all, and because it's the first in the series, the ending is left open - not a cliffhanger, for her to build upon the world she's created. Believe me when I say you will want book two, yesterday.
A great opener to what promises to be an exciting series from Font.

Brian Morrison seems to be living a life of somewhat misery. He has two close friends - Mark Stanton and Darryl Martin but he lives with Tourette's Syndrome which leaves him with uncontrollable tics and swearing in the middle of class.
Then on a bit of a dare from his friends, the three boys decide to visit the local psychic, Madame Elizabeth for a Tarot Reading and he rushes out - unsure of what his future is. But when he begins to have dreams that come true Brian knows he needs help.
When the beautiful Shannon McKesson is partnered up with Brian in several classes it doesn't seem to be a coincidence and it looks like they will be spending a lot more time together when it looks like Shannon's life is in danger. Yet the danger may be different than any high school bully that he has ever come across before. Brian must rely on his old friends and his new ones to protect Shannon and lead him to a life he wasn't expecting.
I really enjoyed this book and found it quite different than others I have read lately. Right from the beginning I loved Brian as he was bullied for something that he had no control over and you wanted him to succeed. Mark and Darryl were such great loyal friends that never backed down from what they were up against.
Shannon was great and never backed down from what she believed in, even if it was the "unpopular" thing to do. She was definitely not as weak as you think she is at the beginning of the book.
Can't wait for the next book in the series!

What a fantastic series opener!
The queen of the unexpected twist is back, and this time, Font is taking her storytelling skills to the next level. From the first page, Rise of Alpha unfolds like a movie, sucking you into an elaborately crafted world filled with vivid imagery and characters who are real, engaging, and flawed.
All Brian Morrison wants is to stay off the radar and out of people’s way, but a lifetime of ill-timed expletives and uncontrollable spasms has left him branded ‘the freak with a tic.’ A high school senior with Tourette’s syndrome, he gets by a day at a time with the help of two loyal companions. Avid Leaguers and best friends, the trio make an odd presentation, but they work. The social reject, the jock, and the Goth. However, when Shannon McKesson enters the picture, life as the three boys know it—especially Brian—starts changing in unfathomable ways.
Amidst an action-filled tale of teenagers and royalty, fantastical weaponry and other worlds, is an endearing story of young love and heartache. For a brilliantly executed roller-coaster ride of emotions packed with everything from laughter to despair, I can’t recommend this book enough.

I received ARC version of this book for a honest review.
Rise of Alpha is first book of the Prodian Journey. The story follows young man, called Brian Morrison, who has always been kind of loner because his tourettes, only having couple friends who is close to him. After going to visit a psychic with his friends, he get premonition, which scares him a lot. While visiting the psychic, he meets Shannon, beautiful girl, who goes to same school as him. When they meet again at school, he finds himself assigned to projects with Shannon, who wants to spend time with him. Brian starts to have nightmares and most of them come true.
Brian soon faces things that he could have never imagined to be true, while trying to get to know Shannon.
As always Lorenz Font succeed to write a story that keeps its readers addicted to her story. The characters were well written and I once again found myself a bookboyfriend I wanted to have to myself, this time though, it wasn’t the hero but side character Matro, who was mysterious and strong character, I wanted to know so much more about him and I really hope to read more about him in next book of this series!
The storyline was really interesting and even though this book was for YA, it will be great book for adults too!
Rise of Alpha is first book of the Prodian Journey. The story follows young man, called Brian Morrison, who has always been kind of loner because his tourettes, only having couple friends who is close to him. After going to visit a psychic with his friends, he get premonition, which scares him a lot. While visiting the psychic, he meets Shannon, beautiful girl, who goes to same school as him. When they meet again at school, he finds himself assigned to projects with Shannon, who wants to spend time with him. Brian starts to have nightmares and most of them come true.
Brian soon faces things that he could have never imagined to be true, while trying to get to know Shannon.

Brian is not your normal teenager. He has a lot to overcome when dealing with bullying and his lack of confidence. He has Tourette's Syndrome, which causes him to twitch and use expletives at the most inopportune times. That being said, he has a couple of true blue friends who support him and let him be as "normal" as possible. That is until his "normal" becomes completely NOT normal.
Brian is pulled into a world where the girl he covets becomes someone he has to watch over, and the people around him are not from this plane of existence. Brian becomes exactly the opposite of who he sees himself as and has to come out of the shadows.
I loved this book. I loved the relationships between the kids, Brian and how he takes it all in and just has to rise above it all. I love how he can laugh at himself even when he is being picked on and abused, and that his heart truly is to protect those around him regardless of his own issues.
This book had me laughing out loud, crying and then on the edge of my seat. It had me turning the pages as fast as I could and then dying at the end because it was over and I just wanted more. Can't wait for the next installment!

Brian wasn't a normal teenage kid. By saying that I am meaning he has Tourettes syndrome. He was the laugh of the school with his uncontrollable tics and outburst. His friends thought it would be fun to visit a physic reader. What each of them are told sends them into a world of the unknown and could possibly change their lives.
He meets Shannon and controlling his emotions around her becomes a bigger problem for him.. He becomes very close to Shannon and he is soon to realise that his duty is to keep her safe from harm. While keeping her safe from unghastly creatures and not so human people, he begins to uncover that he isn't who he thought he was and neither is Shannon.
He is the Rise of Alpha. A teenager whose sole purpose his to protect his people.
This book grabbed me from page one and held my interest the whole way through.
Brian was by far my favorite character because he overcame the bullying in and out of school. He was the oddball who came out on top in the end.

A wonderful ya/na book where the main character has Tourette syndrome. I love that the author including the muscle twitches, tics, and sometimes uncontrolled movements as well as involuntary articulating that is common. Each case is different so while the author opted for the more classic burst of obscenity, I've known suffered that mimic back a sound if the pitch of the word catches their ear. (Such as the guitar brand Nippon Ghaki did Antonio on barter kings). But disorder aside, Brian is a very charming hero that draws you into his story, from the night his friends Darryl and Mark drag him to a tarot card reader to the last pages as the cutest girl in school prepares to leave for - can't tell you where without spoiling anything.
There's premonitions, aliens, other parallel universes, death, funerals, graduation, bodyguards, and all sorts of adventures, period and plot twists. I'd be fine with my sixteen year old reading out, uncertain about the twelve year old but a no on the five year old. Great story though. Can't wait to see where the author takes us next.

Ms. Font has done it again. This story took me for an exhilarating ride. Filled with humor, mystery and teen angst, I can't put this book down.
Brian has been bullied all of his life. He hides and prefers to be in the company of his two friends. The only ones who understand his illness and are not embarrassed to be associated with him. On a dare, they went to a psychic reading. The prediction jump started a series of incidents that Brian don't understand. But when it brings him closer Shannon, the prettiest girl in school, he dives in and doesn't look back.
Told in Brian's perspective, I enjoyed his inner ramblings. The rest of the story is not what I expected as Brian came out of his shell and a true hero. The twist is brilliant and left me on the edge of my seat. It all made sense in the end. I can't wait for book 2. Bring it on!

I purchased Rise of Alpha during a .99 cent promotion. Well developed central characters and an engaging narrative style make this story a fun ride. Font did a great job of world-building, although there are still a lot of plot holes that would be explained later, no doubt. Rise of Alpha ended in a good place, but there is obviously more to this story and I'll be interested to read on. An excellent Young Adult novel which will likely be enjoyed by fans of DelSheree Gladden's Aisling series.

Give it up for the talented Lorenz Font for a fantastic series opener! A well told story with an unlikely hero, royalty, weapons and another universe. I was enthralled from the beginning chapter and never set it down. In fact I have read it now twice and it still captures my imagination. Do yourself a favor and read this book and every single one after , and then read them again.
