Hello everyone, I’m Pauline Baird Jones, a USA TODAY Bestselling Author affectionately known as Perilous Pauline. I adopted the name after I found out on Twitter that Goodreads says that I died in 1999.
Since I was already dead, I went ahead and embraced my quirky sense of humor and channeled it into my stories, my Facebook Pages, and my YouTube Channel where I love to write and perform as the Dead Author Live.
As you may have guessed from both my Perilous Pauline and Dead Author Live, I never cared for reality all that much.
When I’m not sharing the beautiful photographs that my husband has taken, chasing after my grandchildren, or expanding my Lego city, I’m off wandering among the genres, rampaging like Godzilla (we were born the same year!) and mixing peril and humor into my romances.
For motivation, I devour chocolate, bacon and collect flamingoes and mid-century modern anything. Readers can follow me on my website at https://paulinebjones.com/ and Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/AuthorPaulin....

Excellent romantic suspense with strong characters and good rapport.
I appreciated that there was plenty of sexual awareness and tension but not outright sex.
The suspense story was the stronger element and kept me on the edge waiting to see how it would be resolved.

Since I like to end on a good note, I'll start with the bad... But I hope you stick around for the good!

I felt at times throughout the book that the point of view switched randomly. By that I mean some times I thought the story was being told from Matts perspective, and then in the next paragraph it shifted to Dani's. It kind of through me off.

I also felt something was off in the sentence structure. I felt like there were missing words here and there, and sometimes just the wrong word. Example: "[they] spent the next few hours bouncing theories off each other about what Hayes might be up." Fairly certain "to" should be added to the end of that. It's a huge distraction.

I'm beginning to question whether or not EBooks are looked at as closely as paperbacks are.

All of that aside, this book was fabulous!! Lots of fun twists, and my heart raced on more than one occasion. I may, or may not, have caught myself holding my breath a few times as well! ;)

I found the characters to be relatable, and sexy! -did I mention I have a thing for cops?-

The ending was well written, tacky, corny, and absolutely perfect. -I know, that sounds bad, but it was so good-

The drama felt really, the details gory and disturbing. All the right fixins for a great romantic thriller.

I was pretty pleased with the overall book, rating it a 3.5 out of 5 just for the errors mentioned at the beginning.

I WOULD, however, recommend this book to everyone, and would read it again myself :)

TBR Challenge 2011- June Category: Contemporary. This book has been on my Amazon wishlist since April 2010.

The author's strengths are her actions scenes and her wordplay. Jones writes some of the best action scenes I've ever read. They are tense, exciting, and well-plotted. I found this true in her sci-fi rom books, and It's true for the romantic suspense, The Last Enemy. Her way with words and phrases is superior. Even in this sometimes dark suspense, Jones makes you smile and even laugh out loud at the way the female leads looks at life.

Be cautioned that this isn't a light and fluffy story. It's gritty and the body count is high. Toward the end when Dani is enduring an exhausting ordeal, the reader is right there with her. Jones does a great job describing the characters physical and emotional states.

I admit to some problems with the first 25% of the book when I didn't agree with the choices Dani made, and felt her decisions hurt others. I came to understand her reasoning better as the book went on, but for a while I was stumped. Also, there was one part of the plot (dealing with Dani's online identities and who knew what) that seemed like a plot hole, although I didn't backtrack to see if I simply missed the explanation. (One reason I prefer print books. They're easier to search for information when you need to.)

Overall, very entertaining book. I found myself reading aloud parts to my husband so he could enjoy the humor with me. There is a lot of strong attraction and emotion between the lead characters, but it isn't acted on for the most part. There is angst, and it's very well done. Small spoiler ahead.

A decent read.. But NOT even 1 little kiss?

I think I liked this book. I thought Dani’s constant running and hiding from the US Marshalls was kind of crazy, but I kind of understood it. I did like how tough she was when it came to getting away from the bad guy, as well as the Marshalls. And yet, the book made you think she was heading right into the bad guy’s hands, without realizing it. And you can sure tell this is a pretty old book by the way they talked about the computers. We’ve come a long way since 1999, when this book was published.

This really wasn’t a romance, either. At 40% Matt and Dani still hadn’t met, except for a stairwell chat that lasted for about 2 sentences, and he was a couple of flights up, looking down at her when he spoke, then she walked out and jumped on a Harley and took off. Oh, Matt had begun to have feelings for Dani since the first time he saw her picture, thinking she was dead, and thinking he had missed something by not knowing her when she was alive. And those feeling only got worse and more confusing when he found out she wasn’t dead. And then she couldn’t stop thinking about him either, once she’d spoken to him on the stairs. It was sweet thoughts, not anything sexual, sorta’ like desire, but not. AND I think the author should have made the hero younger (he was 45) or stop complaining about his aches and pains.

It was a pretty good story, overall, but it wasn’t very realistic. If you spent time around “real” cops, especially in the 90’s and 2000’s you know they swore like crazy. So, to write a book like this is a little unreal. It was ONLY a story about Marshalls, witnesses and hired killers, who didn’t have sex and didn’t swear.

If you’re looking for something hot and steamy, keep looking, because he NEVER even kissed her, though there was words of wanting that went through their minds occasionally. No real swearing to speak of, da*n, h*ll, sh*t, that’s all, and they weren’t used that much. A very good book for someone looking for a G-rated book. And as much as I enjoyed it I won’t be reading this author again. Her kind of writing is a little too mild for me.

There were a lot of good secondary characters in this book: Dark Lord, Alice, Riggs, Luke, Sebastian, Meathook, Kelly, Peg, Richard Hastings, Bates, Orsini, and some I’ve forgotten.

As to the narrator: He was just OK for me. His women’s voice weren’t very good and he read without an ounce of emotion but he gave the hero and the hero’s brother a very sexy voice. He narrated this book in 2012 so I’m sure he much better now.

Wow! Basically all I can say really, lol! I was completely thrown off what this book was going to be like and loved every minute of it. I am usually a big fan of romantic suspense where you have the H/h hooking up and blah blah blah....but this was a complete surprise and I really loved it. Do I wish there was at least a couple kisses here and there, hell yeah, but did it stop me from not liking the book, nope! This is the first book I have read by this author, and she is awesome! Her writing style keeps you hooked from the minute the story begins. I loved the characters. I loved that Dani never gave up, even though things were just too much at times. I loved her attitude and her quick smart ass remarks. She was fragile but strong. Matt, oh my! That description of him when Dani first ran into him at the cyber geeks place was, swoon worthy of a nuclear bomb going off, haha! I complete went all drool like over it and was wishing I could jump in the book to get a better look, haha! If you are looking for some realism in a fiction based book you got it here! I definitely recommend this book and this author. I look forward to reading more by her!

I'm really pissed that Phoebe never told Jake about her motives. Or who the bad guy really is! The reader knows, but the author could have given us an emotional scene that bonded the two of them together. Laid everything bare. I was waiting and waiting for it to happen, but nope. Bad guy's dead, so it doesn't matter why he was murdered or why Phoebe spent 7 years working toward destroying him. NO BIG FUCKING DEAL OR ANYTHING!

So while I enjoyed the book quite a bit, I'm left with a slightly-more-than-mild dissatisfaction after finishing.

Terrific read! I loved the novel. PBJ's writing style drags you right in and won't let go. Minor editing faults (missing words) and the fact that some scenes showed its original publishing date of 1999 didn't take from the overall reading pleasure. The pacing of the story and the topics make the slow approach of the main characters towards each other believable.

A bit of romance, but not too lovey-dovey. A bit of thriller, but sadly not enough. I loved the characters and their quirks, but the storyline dragged too much and the antagonist was quite a wimp. An enjoyable, fluff read.

I have so many e books downloaded on my kindle yet to read, not to talk about paperbacks and what did I do instead of reading one of them, I downloaded this one. Reason being, it has been so long since I read a book that involved the US Marshal service.

I'm sort of disappointed if I am being honest. I have never been a fan of writers who choose to tell us about incidents instead of writing out scenes as they are happening. Story started out that way eliminating the creation of a suspenseful scene as it was happening where one might have felt some intensity or be on edge. I get that not every violent scene needed to be brought to live so to speak but there was more needed to bring some bit of tension to this story which sadly it was lacking. Also didn't like the way more than a few things happened without any lead into them, like how did the hitman get into some premises without being detected before it was too late. With that said, the action towards the very end was exciting. It was more of a budding romance between Matt (deputy Marshal) and Dani (author) then anything else. Not that it bothered me one way or another but would have liked if they had come together earlier in the story.

I'm not sure about reading the second or third book which has one of Matt's two brothers in each as main characters. The trace of humour with quirky characters is a reason why I would but then like I referred to above I am not a fan of this sort of writing style.

Can a US marshal protect a key witness from a diabolical killer without losing his heart? I was looking for a romantic suspense and boy oh boy, this delivers. With an action-filled plot, characters that are 100% realistic you’ll love to root for, plus an unexpected romance, The Last Enemy is one book I couldn’t put down.

Let’s start with the characters. I connected with Dani right away. She’s a woman on the run from a very bad man. She’s got more courage in her pinky finger than most people I know. She’s doing the right thing by testifying to put a killer behind bars. But things go terribly wrong, like they do in real life. Can she trust anyone? Well, she’ll have to put her trust in someone, eventually, or she’ll wind up dead.

The narration is descriptive and vivid. There are many action scenes, and these scenes are detailed and read like a movie. The tension is also descriptive through the POVs. Pauline Baird Jones is known for her immersive narration, and she does a brilliant job here.

The romance subplot is a minor part of the story, but it is well written. It adds a nice break from the action and suspense. I kept rooting for these two to make it work.

This is book one in the Lonesome Lawmen series and it’s really good. I can’t wait to read the next one.

She's on the run from an enemy that doesn't want her to testify. Our hero means to protect her, if he can find her. And convince her to trust him. And actually do what he says. And avoid falling for her. It's complicated.

This is billed as book one, so all good there.

This is a romantic suspense story, one of my favorite genres. I love the combination of action and romance and this story delivers nicely. The story is well written and easy to read, with a complex plot that has lots of twists and turns to it, making it a challenge to figure out what is coming next. The characters are well developed, with distinct and strong personalities that drive the story forward. We also get plenty of action, combining for a very engaging story. All together, I found this to be very enjoyable and I look forward to more in the series.

Highly recommended.

As I fan of the authors science-fiction and cozy mysteries, I was excited to discover her lawmen. A few pages into the story I realized this was written in the 1990s when a copy of Lord of the Rings is found by the hero and it is referred to as 'obscure'.

A fun read, it is definitely an earlier work--the characters are enjoyable but not as well delineated as in later books. The heroine edges on TSTL at the halfway point as she continues to dodge the lawman hero trying to help her.

The author pulls it out for a satisfying conclusion--but there were a few chapters in the middle that I skimmed.

This is the first time I have drifted away from the author’s wonderful full on Sci-Fi Romances wanting to try something different and must say I really enjoyed this multi layered, suspenseful mystery that is a fast-paced romantic and haunting excursion with its smart resourceful lead Dani and Marshall Matthew Kirby her match in every way as they ignited the pages and delivered one heck of a grandiose read!.

Dani is in witness protection while waiting to testify in a murder trial when the safe house is breached. She manages to survive and is on the run from a hit man and also pursued by the US Marshalls who want her back in protection. This high tension suspense story follows Dani, the hit man, and Matt the marshall through a series of near misses, lots of bodies, and simmering sexual tension to a very satisfying conclusion. A favorite author.

A very tense story. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat as Dani eludes a professional killer. U.S. Marshall Kirby must protect her so she can testify against a murderer. The twists and turns this story takes will keep you guessing as to who the real killer is.

Even though the heroine is a romance author (which we are reminded of often) this is not a light read. Dani Gwynne is a witness in Protective Custody in a safe house that turns out to be not so safe. Somehow a hit man finds Dani and tries to kill her, taking out one of her protectors first. While in the safe house she's been chatting online. How this was allowed when her location was supposed to be secret was beyond me.

Dani feels like she can't trust anyone so runs on her own. She comes across as being smart in this story but running from the US Marshalls wasn't too bright. I understood why she did that but a smart person would have trusted the professionals to do their job. Yeah, some got killed doing it but it's still better to trust them than go it on your own. The way she was called a romance writer so much made her sound incompetent. All in all, it was hard to think very highly of Dani. Matt was one of the Marshalls protecting her. He was so absorbed in his job that he was not a very likable person. But he was good at what he did, making him determined to keep her alive. But she kept evading him and the villain who was after her. The villain was terrific. I hated him like I was supposed to.

This mystery has lots of surprises with the characters and a good ending.

This was part of a bundle - Love on the Edge: 9 Shades of Romantic Suspense
Dani Gwynne is a romance writer. She is also a witness in Protective Custody in a safe house. She needs Diet Dr. Pepper like other people need coffee. In a few hours she will be moved from the protection of the police to the Marshall's district who will keep her safe until she testifies next week. Dani also has a deadline for her next book. Dani decides to take a break and go online. But she can't get a signal. Then she hears a thud in the next room.
The Marshall's service comes to pick Dani up and are faced with a burned-out safe house. They believe Dani is dead. But she escaped with her back pack. She knows what the hit man looks like. He's going to be really angry when he learns she is still alive.
The rest of the story is the hit man tracking down Dani while the Marshall's service begins to realize she is still alive and begin tracking her down as well. Dani has multiple names and accounts on line and she had cash with her. She also has fellow writers and on line friends helping her. Will she make it to court to testify against her ex-brother-in-law, a supposed upstanding citizen?

I loved this book. Lots of drama and fast paced!

Phoebe’s on a mission to make her sister’s killer pay but has she gone too far? Byte Me is a hacker romantic thriller I couldn’t stop reading. The morally grey characters intrigued me. The fast-moving plot had me reading late into the night. The opposites attract romance is just the right amount of heat and humor. Trust me, if you like technothrillers with a side of romance, this book is for you.

Let’s start with the characters. This book is all about the two main characters and the killer who’ll do whatever it takes to avoid capture. I love that Phoebe uses her talent as a hacker to score some vigilante justice. The morality issue comes into play and the reader must decide whether to root for Phoebe or against her. I chose to cheer her on. I also like Jake, the US marshal. He’s a true hero and his conflict is poignantly written. What’s a lawman to do?

I’m a big fan of this author because her writing is deeply emotional yet full of action and suspense. I’m thrown into the story and have to hang on for the ride. I read late into the night because I had to find out what happened next. Trust me, you’ll want to read Byte Me.
