I really enjoyed this timeline look at the GFFA. It's full colour and encompasses movies, streaming shows, books/graphic novels, all in contextual timelines, so far. Comprehensive and other than some minor quibbles (Bail Organa being noted as Leia's stepfather? Adoptive, surely. Because... accuracy.) I thought it was great. I came by this as a birthday present and am so happy to have this among my collection of Star Wars books. Recommended.
On Star Wars day I had the pleasure of spending much of the morning at work reading through this and it is a fantastic resource. There was a lot going on a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away and this book offers a vast variety of timelines to track it all, with full spreads for each topic. This can be anything from large and lengthy series of events, such as Leia's entire life, or more minor threads. What is really helpful is the way it shows how all these threads intersect and while the pages are fairly busy, they offer great visuals and concise but helpful details. It draws from everything currently Star Wars "canon", from the movies and tv series to the books, comics and video games (those about to play Jedi Survivor will find Cal's timeline in here). I'm keeping this at work so whenever a co-worker says "okay, but what was that about on Mandalorian last night" we can pull it down for the full history. This is great for those who need all the gaps in lore filled in, and just as entertaining for those who have kept up. I find myself googling the timelines oftens, so this is nice. I do wish it cited the source for each event but there are SO many little blurbs per page that I see why they didn't. And may the force be with you!
Someone is going to be delighted with the deep dive into the world of Star Wars mythology. It just isn’t me.
There it is; for some an oversized hard copy but for me, an e-book. The format does not allow the usual moving from frame to frame. The timeline is complex and to read the small type each mini-item must be enlarged and then you lose the view of that entire page. Page after page with breakout boxes that relate to that portion of the timeline. Fatigue set in early for me.
Several hundred pages from start to finish and the “legacy stories” aren’t to be found.
Cool to see everything in chronological order, but while has more details than one could ever need, I wish it labeled which specific property the events came from.
As someone who hasn’t read everything in the Disney canon due to not liking a lot of the content or finding the quality lackluster, this was a great book. I could get a big picture of the events without having to read or watch everything. I still found it too easy to forget names from one blurb to the next, but that could also be because the layout of the timelines threw me off a bit. For example, sometimes the larger portion on a page would not be the first piece of the timeline on the given two-page spread, yet that was what my eye was drawn to first.
I like how certain things and people get their own spread at various times throughout the book. Anakin’s lightsaber, Star Destroyer, Rebel cells, the Chiss, and Leia were among my favorites. I found the Mandalorian (Din) to be the most asinine though as all the information was from the same time frame as the events explained from the television show. Unfortunately, there is at least one ridiculous piece of information per spread. Very few had no irrelevant information and some had more than one, so let’s say an average of one per spread. But the first thing that jumped out at me was that in 230 BBY, the Jedi felt dread. Really? THAT is the timeline piece that was chosen? Do we REALLY need that written out? Some parts could have also been easily combined into one instead of two separate pieces.
I did find it almost beautifully jarring to see how much happens all at once. This book is a good compilation of all the events.
Additional thoughts as I went through: - Huyang is 25,000 years old? That makes no sense at all. - Jabba is OLD. - I liked seeing the THR information I don’t know past phase 1, but I kept wondering at various times–what the heck happened to the Drengir and Nihil? - The fact that there is a Jedi Sean makes me laugh - I listened to both ‘Master and Apprentice’ and ‘Dooku: Lost’ and recalled none of the information on Sifo-Dya and Averross. Thank goodness for this timeline! - What the heck at Qui-Gon in a “romantic relationship.” Gag me. - It’s quite interesting that Gardulla lost the bet to Watto around the same time that Galen and Orson met between 6 and 3 BBY. - Order 66 was an intense spread. I also liked the layout of First Order Powers Up. - I didn’t know Wayland is canon! - The timeline deviations and offshoots in 1BBY (before information on the TIE fighter) are awesomely intense. I had to take a breather after that one. - I love that the Ewoks Chirpa, Logray, and Ra-Lee were represented in 1 BBY. - I LOVE the pink of the Age of Rebellion section!! - I don’t understand how Ben was born in 5 ABY - Cool! Darth Bane is canon - I keep reading Shara Bey as Shira Brie. It’s worse here than when I’ve read about her in books or comics - I am quite annoyed that “Frog Lady” is the creature’s name. - I can’t believe the sequels only cover a year. Also, Leia keeping secret her parentage for 24 years is asinine. Then Ben gets sulky about it? A lot with the ST just baffles me. The more I read, the more I realized that there is no actual foundation for the First Order. How did it just push out the New Republic? How can there be a “Resistance” group if the NR is the actual government? It’s a lot of poor writing IMO. - Meanwhile, there is no information on Palpatine’s son, like where he came from. Ysanne Isard, perhaps? Later, it says that he was a clone, but he looks nothing like Palps in any form. The words say one thing, rationality says another. - I am tickled silly by the fact that there is a canonical Kip with explosives. Except…it took me a long while to find her on the Wook. I didn’t realize it was a surname because my eyes skipped over the “Professor Glenna Kip” part of the “Resistance on the Move” spread. Alas. A 200 year old being from THR. Wook doesn’t even mention explosives!
This is not a critique since I know it would be unrealistic and extremely difficult to do so, but it would be cool to get source material of each event. If this were an interactive webpage, that would work out perfectly. Again, I wouldn’t expect it, but it is a nice idea.
The book is an impressive effort by the authors to condense the complex events of the Star Wars universe into a concise and easy-to-follow format. The research they have done is commendable, as they have clearly taken great care to ensure that the book is accurate and comprehensive.
One of the strengths of the book is the way it presents the timeline in a linear fashion, with key events and important characters highlighted along the way. This makes it easy for fans of the franchise to follow the storyline and understand how all the different movies, books, and TV shows fit together.
However, one of the letdowns of the book is the poor quality of the physical product itself. The printing and paper used are subpar, which can detract from the overall experience of reading the book.
Even with the limited life of these types of books this book should have been rated 5 but the physical issues detracted from the overall experience hence the 2
I'll cop to not actually reading every word of Star Wars: Timelines - and that's at least in part because the words are tiny and in a dim grey font. Also, the words are vaguely linked to a "timeline" that often swirls or splits on the page. If the goal is the follow Star Wars history from beginning to end, it's honestly pretty tough with this book.
Further, this is Star Wars history post-Disney. And it is all of that history, minus, y'know, what hasn't been written yet. You'll get recaps of basically the entire Clone Wars and Rebels TV series, if that's what you're interested in. Pre-High Republic history gets pretty short shrift - two pages! You could at least make up a reason why we don't know stuff from that era - the Legends books and ancillary materials did a better job explaining the fog of history.
Five stars for the sheer quantity of information -- this book brings together what I presume are the major events of all the various Star Wars books, comics and even video games, and shows where they fit in relative to the films and TV shows (through the Obi-Wan series anyway). I was particularly delighted to see the storylines from Disneyland/Disney World's Black Spire Outpost and Galactic Starcruiser included as well.
However, I'm taking back one star for not including source sitations. If you want to follow up on a particular event, it'll take some digging to figure out which novel or comic book you need to look for.
The other (far more) disappointing aspect of this book is the graphic design. It looks pretty enough, but the text is frequently tiny and lacking in contrast, making it often very difficult to read. So minus one star for that too.
Every book of this type becomes outdated eventually, but geez they really should have waited a couple more years. The High Republic project is ongoing and no one wants us to get spoilers just yet, so the section of the book dedicated to the Nihil era feebly ends with a large picture of Marchion Ro - as if that will cover up the fact that so much information is missing!
I will say that it was interesting to see how the shows, comics and books aligned with each other - but none of their titles were mentioned and that makes it impossible to find the media containing those events. Oh wait, that's why we have Wookieepedia. Which is the only resource you need tbh.
Honestly, this book is not worth buying. I'm so glad my library had a copy, because if I'd lost money as well as time I would be even more annoyed than I currently am lol
This is as comprehensive a compilation as I could imagine of the Disney approved Star Wars universe. This book covers everything from the birth of the Jedi through the aftermath of the Battle of Exegol—the movies, the books, the TV shows—all of it. It definitely helped me fill in some gaps, since I don’t see myself watching and reading EVERYTHING. Reading it cover to cover was a little daunting, some parts were a little repetitive and some pages were a little hard to follow—but the content is a Star Wars fans dream come true.
If you love Star Wars and want to know just a little bit more, then this book is for you.
Star Wars Timelines by DK Books. Disney Plus offers a wide variety of Star Wars content including films, TV shows, animated series and more. I was really confused about the overall plot of Star Wars so I needed a book to explain it all. This book truly answered my needs. It's about 350 pages, so it's quite comprehensive. It covers the Star Wars timelines, starting from early history, the High Republic, the fall of the Jedi, and up to the rise of the First Republic. If you're confused or just want a big picture view of Star Wars, this book is a must have. The pictures are stunning and the timelines are very detailed. Love it 10/10
Lovely, colorful and detailed. Overall a very comprehensive look at the Star Wars universe. Covers material from movies, tv shows, novels, comic books and more. My only wish is that it used specific references for entries. There are many entries that were unknown to me, but if I want to go back and read the source material, be it novel, comic, tv show or other, I cannot find it using only this book.
@Beth&Pete: TY this was a fantastic thing to wake up to after surgery.
Thank you to DK for my copy via Goodreads Giveaways! I enjoyed reading through this book which brings together the Star Wars universe so clearly. The visual way the book is laid out is helpful for bringing together all the movies, shows, books, into one coherent story. Not only did I learn so much from pieces of the Star Wars universe that I have not yet explored, but made new connections between stories I’ve known for years. This book is an excellent reference for any kind of Star Wars fan!
pretty good timeline book, visuals are awesome, there is a plethora of content from comics, cartoons, movies, books, etc. i really enjoyed reading bits and pieces i had no idea even existed. i will definitely reference this book whenever i need some more information on certain topics. oh yes and i would like a legends timeline book if there is one someone let me know ‼️
While I didn’t read it word for word, I did really enjoy perusing it. When I saw it a few months ago, I thought it would be a perfect Christmas gift for a friend, so I did just that, and she loved it.
What it did for me was make me realize how much I thought I knew, but actually don’t know, so I want to read a few more books and watch (and re-watch) a few more shows.
This book had tons of information about the Star Wars universe. It starts before the Republic and goes to the beginning of the Empire, though the Rebellion, the Death of Darth Vader, and the beginning of the First Order. Lots of information was in this book. I even ran across things that I had missed since I haven't read and the books & comics.
Easily the nerdiest book I own. If you're the kind of person who would actually buy and read a book about the Star Wars timeline, you'll be obsessed with this. Extremely detailed and comprehensive... it's perfect.
Pretty much exactly what you want from a reference book. This is possibly my favorite Star Wars reference book of all time. It maps out pretty much every event and narrative in the new canon, which is an insane endeavor. I would highly recommend to any fan of the new EU.
A really fun and informative timeline of the Star Wars universe. It includes all canon from the movies / tv shows / and the Star Wars Jedi games up to 2023 which I thought was great.
Worth the read for any Star Wars fans or for those who are just getting into the genre.
Why a 2 star rating? simple. the set up is far too clunky. DC year by year, marvel year by year, even Star wars year by year are all far better laid out chronographies. beautiful illustrations. but clunky.
