3.5. Cool overview. Noticed some inaccuracies/typos though that were distracting (page 141's telescope overview was most glaring). Doesn't mention at all some things I find quite important. Definitely not the end-all-be-all of history books, but interesting to page through.

Volgens mij is dit een geweldig boek om te gebruiken als je een introductie tot de menselijke wereldgeschiedenis wil hebben. Het is niet te diepgaand, maar je krijgt genoeg mee. Het hele concept van één lange tijdlijn met daarbij telkens korte beschrijvingen - soms van een zin, soms een korte alinea - met een hoop foto's werkt, zeker bij dit onderwerp natuurlijk, bijzonder goed en overzichtelijk. 95% van de inhoud wordt op één hoop gegooid en gewoon chronologisch behandeld - hier en daar zit er een dubbele pagina bij over een bepaald, groter onderwerp, maar dat is het. Verder zit alles dooreen: je springt van het Oude Rome naar de Olmeken en China tot de Levant. Misschien vinden sommigen dat irritant, omdat je niet echt een coherent verhaal krijgt van één dynastie, maar dit is gewoon anders en verfrissend. Het geeft een nieuwe kijk op de zaken, wat mij betreft volgens de belangrijkste en bovendien normaalste manier die er is: dat geschiedenis niet rechtlijnig en logisch is, maar dat er van alles dooreen gebeurt zonder dat die dingen aan elkaar gelinkt zijn.

Maar ik heb ook wel een paar opmerkingen.
Zoals gewoonlijk wordt er wel weer te veel aandacht besteed aan het recente verleden. De hele Tweede Wereldoorlog krijgen ineens zes bladzijdes bedeeld, dus ruwweg één bladzijde per jaar. Het grootste deel van de geschiedenis krijgt minimaal 10 jaar per twee bladzijdes mee, in de laatste vijf eeuwen ongeveer worden dat 5 jaar per twee bladzijdes, en na WOII zijn dat zo'n 3 à 5 jaar.
In the grand scheme of things, zoals ze dat in het Engels zo mooi zeggen, is een hoop van die recentere geschiedenis - pakweg de laatste 80 à 85 jaar - gewoon totaal irrelevant. Al die vermeldingen over dekolonisatie, nieuwe Amerikaanse presidenten enzovoorts... die details doen er echt niet toe. Als dat 1000 jaar geleden was gebeurd, had het maximaal één vermelding gekregen waarin iets stond dat er in een periode van een paar decennia ettelijke landen onafhankelijk werden.
Ik snap ook niet waarom ze vanaf WOII ineens met exacte data beginnen werken. Daarvoor worden alleen jaartallen gegeven, terwijl daar ook best een aantal exacte data hadden kunnen staan. Dan was het wel door elkaar geweest - soms wel, soms niet - maar dat was toch mijn voorkeuze geweest.
Bovendien ontbreekt het in die laatste decennia ook duidelijk aan culturele elementen, die daarvoor toch wel meer aan bod kwamen - muziek, literatuur, schilderkunst, noem maar op. Na '45 is het voornamelijk politiek, politiek en meer politiek.

Maar genoeg gezaagd. Het was nog steeds een goed boek, en zeker een aanrader als je gewoon eens een handig overzicht wilt krijgen van wat de mens zoals heeft meegemaakt.

This book is a historical teaching resources that depicts the history of the world over approximately 20,000 years, from the Stone Age to the present day, in chronological order.

There are many historical encyclopedias in DK, but few of them explain history in chronological order, making this a valuable book.

To remember the history of the world, it is easier to get historical matters into one's head by time series than by continent.

However, at any given time, the way history is told is presented in a predetermined vector direction. The true meaning is never told in the text.

Historical events must be considered as to who caused them and for what purpose.

Timelines of World History (DK Timelines) by DK. This book is a simplified version of world history. It starts with Australopithecus, from 4 million years ago and goes up to 2022, when the COVID pandemic hit us hard. The history presented comes from many parts of the world, not just Europe and America. The pictures are beautiful and the timeline is straightforward and easy to understand. If you read every page from start to finish, you'll get a thorough idea of human world history. It's another great book from DK, as always. If I could afford it, I would purchase every DK book ever published but that's just my dream haha!

I appreciate that the book started from ancient history to current times. However, this should definitely be seen as just an outline for historical events versus a thorough source of history. The timelines are spaced out in a way that shows the domino effect of certain events, but most of the focus was on Europe, China and the Middle East. Every other place felt like an afterthought.

Lastly, there were some errors mentioned in different prompts which should have been reviewed and cleared by an editor.

Finally - a book that shows you what's going on in the entire world! It was so nice to see that while xyz was happening in Germany, abc was happening in Cambodia. I learned a ton and was able to reconcile events in a more linear way in my brain. Did you know Madagascar had a queen who killed half of the country's population? I knocked a star off because a map every now and then would've been helpful.

Malgré les limites de la discipline et la culture dans laquelle on baigne, j'ai trouvé cette frise chronologique très diversifiée et pas outrageusement occidentale. J'ai aussi apprécié le côté multidisciplinaire avec des évènements qui ne sont pas uniquement du domaine politique ou militaire.
C'est un bel ouvrage général de niveau intermédiaire pour ceux et celles désirant élargir leur culture général.

I have had this book for 9 months now and I can say that it is very useful. This book should not be treated as a whole that mentions all the key events (with causes and consequences), but only as a starting point for further study.
After I finished reading this book, it was easier for me to focus on some things and topics that interest me and to further expand my knowledge via internet.

Beautifully written and succinct timeline of all World History events. This was my first DK Publication and I know it won’t be my last.

Considero que es una guía con varios de los eventos más importantes en la historia de la humanidad empezando el libro desde la aparición del Australopitecinos hace 4 millones de años hasta el año 2021 en el asalto provocado por manifestantes en el capitolio en Washington el 6 de enero de 2021. Yo la verdad lo recomiendo.
