NANCY WILLARD was an award-winning children's author, poet, and essayist who received the Newbery Medal in 1982 for A Visit to William Blake's Inn. She wrote dozens of volumes of children's fiction and poetry, including The Flying Bed, Sweep Dreams, and Cinderella's Dress. She also authored two novels for adults, Things Invisible to See and Sister Water, and twelve books of poetry, including Swimming Lessons: New and Selected Poems. She lived with her husband, photographer Eric Lindbloom, and taught at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Like the first one, this was good, but in a slightly different way. It was more Alice in Wonderland meets The Wizard of Oz - with a tantalizing bit of The Tempest thrown in. I liked how Willard set things up and then eventually got around to resolving them - or how the next clue would slightly change what was originally predicted, resulting in a further quest that Anatole and company would undertake.
Illustrations weren't quite as good as in the first book. Some excellent but others a bit too mundane.
This and it's following book in the series have stayed with me well into my adulthood. So much so, I sought out the original books and bought them, one ended up with a signature from the Author. I used to listen to this series on cassette tape from my local library. It's still so magical!
