The Truth About Dragons: An Anti-Romance

Rate this book
In the spring of 1971, a major catastrophe occurred in California, and it was not until a scholar discovered a manuscript written by one Firedrake, a dragon, that the real nature of the catastrophe was revealed to men.

Hazard Adams' new novel presents this manuscript. Firedrake, who is only 606 years old at the time of the catastrophe, is well educated in all the elaborate ritual and learning of dragon tradition, which, he complains, has been sorely corrupted in human myths. His account of the happenings in March and April of 1971 tells of a young girl's efforts to seduce him and to gain possession of the mysterious hoard that he guards. At the same time, he reveals much about the hidden activities and purposes of dragons.

His efforts to protect the hoard from the encroachment of the population explosion, real-estate agents, ecological deterioration, space engineers, wandering youths, and the vagaries of human nature are comic, heroic, and pathetic. As we learn about dragons, their traditions and their lifestyle, we find that by setting them off against men we are reading a commentary upon contemporary man too.

Great story! According to the preface/author's notes, it was originally published in 1970. The story is entertaining and easy to read. You find traces of ancient Greek and Babylonian stories that helped shape modern literature. Loved the ending with the hints of dragons living among us without all the popular crap about shape-shifting dragons or intelligent dinosaurs that have survived for hundreds of million year.
